The Vietnam War was as much a part of the tumultuous Sixties as Flower Power and the Civil Rights Movement. Five US presidents were convinced that American troops could end a war in the small, divided country of Vietnam and stop Communism from spreading in Southeast Asia. But they were wrong, and the result was the death of 58,000 American troops. Presenting all sides of a complicated and tragic chapter in recent history, Jim O'Connor explains why the US got involved, what the human cost was, and how defeat in Vietnam left a lasting scar on America.
What Was the Vietnam War? Reviews

Continuing the Project Learning English by myself. I learned a lot about Vietnam War with this book. And for me the vocabulary was easy.

It shows how the Vietnam War started and how it ended!

Good read
The way these soldiers were treated after coming home from the war is disgusting. And in the end, they are still a communist country. It's just sad. -
I think the theme is people fight hard for what they believe in
-
A thoughtful, clear and even handed look at the Vietnam war that children can understand.

This was a gift from a friend. One of the shortest books I've read, it discussed its topic in only 105 pages. I found no substantive errors, but was disappointed in the style; generally short sentences, and explanations of words that most adults ought to already know. Further there were phonetic helps for non-English words, that many adults would have previously heard. While a timeline of Viet Nam specific events alongside a timeline of world history events was provided, I did not find it useful. And while a short Bibliography was provided, there were no notes providing references. The type size was quite large, making it by design, a real page turner. I'm grateful for the gift, of course. But I suspect this was aimed at a younger audience, who would appreciate the many drawings and photos.

I took a class last year that was covering the topic of the Vietnam War, and I was always interesting time period in United States history. That class covered everything it could to describe the time, how the US got involved, how the losses effected the US, and what life was like following the war. This book was one that is on the shorter side, but covers most of the important points of the topic needed to understand this war. It also has very easy text and good vocabulary for younger students who wish to learn more on this war. I would have this book within my classroom library as a good example of an informational text.

A pretty good basic, brief history of the Vietnam War for kids, including the history that led up to it. Not very detailed, but a great overview, and even as an adult I learned some things I didn't know about the history and events that led to it.

We found this to be thorough and engaging. I was pleased by how well it worked for my seven year old, who loves history, but would have been bored by a book that focused too heavily on combat or weapons.
-
Interesting overview of the lead up to the war, the war, and the memorials after the war.
