Chloe feels life is finally perfect as she moves back into her home town, and into a new house with her fiancé. Her career with the FBI looks promising, and her wedding is on the horizon.

But, she learns, all is not as it seems in suburbia. Chloe begins to see the underside—the gossip, the secrets, the lies—and she finds herself haunted by her own demons: her mother’s mysterious death when she was 10, and her father’s imprisonment.

And when a fresh body is found, Chloe soon realizes that her past, and this small town, might hold the key to solving both.

An emotionally wrought psychological suspense with layered characters, small-town ambiance and heart-pounding suspense, NEXT DOOR is book #1 in a riveting new series that will leave you turning pages late into the night.

Next Door (Chloe Fine, #1) Reviews

An enjoyable enough mystery that sees trainee FBI agent Chloe return to her hometown with her new fiance. Chloe wants to mend fences with her twin sister, their relationship has been strained since her father murdered their mother when the girls were ten years old. But trouble has a way of following Chloe's sister Danielle around, and soon a body is found, with all the evidence pointing at Danielle. Can Chloe find a way to prove her sister's innocence? Is Danielle even innocent?

A quick and easy to read crime novel, I did enjoy it, but I think I will find it to be forgettable. It's an okay read for a few hours on a quiet weekend, but honestly I can't see myself picking up the rest of the series.

Chloe Fine, an intern with the FBI Evidence Response Team, finds herself in the middle of a murder investigation in which her troubled twin sister, Danielle, is the prime suspect. As she and her FBI mentor, Agent Kyle Greene investigate, Chloe must face the dark and troubled past of her mother’s death some seventeen years earlier.

This narrative fails to build tension and doesn’t provide the reader with much in the way of suspense. The mostly unlikable characters spend a great deal of time making less-than-believable choices, and the entire plot lacks credibility. Once readers get past the implausibility of an intern actually investigating a case in which her sister is a suspect, there’s the sending of a suspect to prison because she appears to have committed a crime. Before any formal charges are brought against her, she’s hustled off to prison? Law enforcement simply does not work that way in the United States.

And then there’s the tired, frustrating, overused good twin/bad twin trope that needs to be retired forever. Every reader who also happens to be a twin cringes whenever this scenario pops up in a book, usually because most writers have absolutely no idea of what it’s actually like to be a twin and they don’t begin to understand the relationship and how twins interact with each other.

Story and plot points aside, there’s a desperate need for someone to edit . . . Greene often becomes Green; Steven becomes Martin in one conversation before morphing back to Steven in that very same conversation; present tense sneaks into a long piece written in past tense; plural noun/singular verb sentences keep popping up . . . these, and so much more, all work together to pull the reader out of a story that fails to deliver on so many levels.

This is the first in a series of Chloe Fine stories; hopefully, some reality will edge its way into the telling of future tales.

This was the first audiobook I’ve listened to in a while. It was also one of the better books I’ve listened to. Not just because the book was good, but also because the narrator was good! This makes such a huge difference! Great read...I’d rate it a 4.5.

  • Lorraine

2* because it wasn't written well and the scenario was fairly unbelievable.

  • Cheryl

This is a 3.5 star read.

Another winner from Blake Pierce, but I did notice there were a few quality issues regarding editing and typesetting that distracted me at times.

Domestic melodrama with an unbelievably bad FBI-police procedural attached

I’m a crime-fiction fan who reads a lot of police procedurals, and I regret wasting my time on this book. If you like police procedurals, don’t bother reading this one. IMHO, this book is more a domestic melodrama that’s unfortunately hitched to an improbable and unbelievable police/FBI subplot. First off, why is the protagonist—who is an FBI Evidence Response Team intern—not working on crime scene evidence collection and collation? This intern is allowed to investigate a murder that her sister is suspected of committing. Wrong on so many levels.

Problems: Blatant disregard of police/FBI protocols and procedures; illegal FBI/police actions and activities; forensic errors, and disregard of jurisdictional issues. I’m puzzled by the author’s lack of knowledge about basic legal issues, not to mention forensics. Add the lack of research about drug pharmacology and psychiatric diagnoses.

Add to the above, a protagonist that seems to have little common sense and questionable decision-making capabilities. There’s also that overdone twin-sisters cliché with a cast of unlikable, cutout characters.

This book needs a copy editor with a super-sized red pen.

I've become so used to Blake Pierce's writing style that I can almost predict the whole story now.

Though this is also a plus point because the way he uses his language is pretty much fascinating.. but then at times it can be irritating enough to burst a vein.

    Anyways,

A female FBI intern Chloe Fine.
Has a twin, Danielle Fine (her complete opposite and a bartender)
    A fiancé with controlling parents.
A dark past (basically her "dad" had murdered their mom when they were 10)

Being a psychological thriller enthusiast, I didn't really like the story and the ending.. well it escalated a bit too quickly.

    **Spoilers**

So basically Danielle's so-called boyfriend Martin is found dead inside a car, which a night before Danielle had pushed into the lake because she got to know about Martin's affairs.
So basically the prime suspect is Danielle and Chloe, being a sentimental and the loveliest sister in the world promises to help her.

    Back Story

Danielle has her meds and is going through therapy while Chloe and her to be hubby Steven had just shifted to the same town Pinecrest where both the kids had spent their childhood.

Chloe hates her in-laws because they are rude, demanding, etc etc and Steven blindly follows his mom and so both of them start to have quarrals with each-other increasing the family tensions.

Steven and his parents hate Danielle because of the rumours surrounding her and also becasue they think a girl like her "ruins the family reputation"

Anyways, Chloe invites Danielle to a block party and Danielle comes along with Martin who is already half drunk and has a row with Steven which complicates things a bit further.

Anyways, the thing that gave me some excitement was the latter half as, when the murder of Martin is being uncovered, Chloe realises that it is also related to her past and that her nice, gossiping neighbours have a thing or two related to it.

Now, Danielle's character was one of a kind and it was beautifully shown though Chloe, got on my nerves alot and her being all emotional and moody time and again was extremely annoying.
Steven again, had a good character showing how or what a so-called "perfect" person can actually be and even Martin had a real good character twist in the latter half.

Agent Greene, Chloe's supervisor was a fine agent and made a huge impact in the story.
Supportive, leader traits and the charms he had was literally one of the important mentions that saved the story.

The other side-characters were lovely and their development in the story was commendable.

Though I would have really wished to see Chloe's character develop a bit from the emotional sister-with a dark past- who is going through alot
    to a
damn fine agent-serious with work-has the confidence and strength required for a perfect female lead

As mentioned before, the ending was a bit too fast and I couldn't properly enjoy is as much.

🔎 Had Chloe's father really murdered their mother? What was the eeriness that bothered Chloe in their new neighbourhood? What is the thing that Danielle has been hiding? What is the meaning behind those envolopes?🔍

A quick short read, though requires some MAJOR developments.

    Final rating- 2/5
Not recommended (but u can go ahead to read it)

This was awful. Terrible writing, basically implausible plot, clunky character development, just bad all around. Now I know why so many of this author's books are free on my Kindle. I deleted all of them, without reading more than this one.

  • Hilal Işık

Just BAD. Horrible character developments, unrealistic incidents and obviously no editing. But it was good to listen it in my super crowded and loud subway trips since you don't have to use any of your brain cells to understand this THING.

  • Trisha

This one was interesting but not great. There was little in the story to really make it stand out in the mystery/thriller realm. I thought the story of the girls sitting on the steps as their dad was cuffed interesting but the rest of it was just...odd.

No one talked in this book. I can't believe there are so many adults in the story with the complete inability to actually open their mouths and communicate. I also found the police procedure and a lot of the reactions off. Case in point, no one goes to 'prison' unless their sentence is >12 months (even convictions <12 months don't go to 'prison') and instead would be in county lock up (jail). There were other points but it was easy to gloss over. Meh, it was okay but didn't stand out.

This book had a great plot and was tricky enough that I kept changing my mind about who killed who! And I still didn't get it right. There were some unfinished threads in this book but I assume they will be picked up later since this a series .
The only problem I had with this book is the huge leeway given to Chloe , an FBI intern. She was allowed to investigate everything including a murder her own sister was implicated in. Also, as soon as Chloe found new info she called her sister first, then her FBI mentor. This rings so unethically to me. However the author has written some amazing FBI series (Such as the Riley Paige series) and all the procedures seem spot on. Since I feel I got 4 stars of enjoyment from this book I rated it as that, even if it seemed sophomoric to me as far as FBI procedure.

  • Donna ~ The Romance Cover

These books are incredibly addictive and as you can see from my reading list, I am reading them at the rate of knots. I have been devouring this series and every other series this author has written. What I will note, is that the books seem to be getting shorter at the same price point and the editing leaves a lot to be desired. However, the stories just bring me back for more and more and more.

I really really really hated Steve. From the get go. He 100% rubbed me the wrong way. Which is the sign of a well-written character as you were supposed to hate him. I have to admit that I wasn’t a fan of the twin sisters either. I can’t quite put my finger on why, what specifically made me dislike them, but there’s something there. Maybe it was Chloe’s constant need to learn and be smug with the compliments gained from her training. And her sister? Just too broken and black sheep-like. I did like the premise of the story - dad kills mom, kids left parentless, twin gets framed for murder - but it was a difficult read to get through for some reason.

    Entretenido pero nada más...

  • Jessi

This book follows two twin sisters who’ve been trough a rather severe and traumatic event in their childhood.

I was so excited to read a mystery book that tackles trauma and the recollection of repressed memories. But in reality, this book just made it seem like having PTSD is being moody and antisocial... I really don’t recommend it, and yes I do think one star is being generous.

It’s okay not to be fully enlightened on a subject, but as a writer, please do your research.

Me gustó mucho!

A book bringing back the haunted past to future, hoping it wouldn't destroy it.

    Next Door by
Blake Pierce is a psychological suspense, first book in Chloe Fine series. I listened to the audiobook and was very well intrigued. Undoubtedly, the revelations were really unexpected and had me at the edge of my seat.

The plot follows Chloe Fine, an FBI intern who has built her career from the shattered pieces of her past. She moves to her hometown with her fiancé, scared yet excited for the new beginning. In the town, lives her sister, Danielle, a socially awkward person who works at a bar, living a pretty unstable life. The sisters have become very distant over the years but Chloe is adamant to know more about Danielle and help her with her life.

It has been seventeen years, yet the sisters couldn't let go of the haunted memory. Seventeen years ago, their mother had been murdered and their father arrested for the crime. Chloe finds it difficult to fit in the new environment but tries her best. The calm waves take a twisted turn when a sudden death occurs. Is the death related to the sister's past? Bringing back haunted memories? But how? What's really going on?

I really enjoyed reading this book. Though the development of characters lagged a bit, making it difficult to strike the imagination.

murder/mystery not my normal genre but it was a good book. had my own suspicion about some of the characters.

  • Hemapriyaa

Okay just because I have given
4 stars it doesn't mean it's one of the best thrillers I have ever read. I got it for free on kindle as I never downloaded free kindle books I thought of giving this one a try I never had much expectations for this one but to my surprise for a free book this one is too good.
Get your hands on this one if you want a fast paced decent thriller to kill your time.

    1) l'edizione italiana è molto poco curata.
    2) i personaggi.
Devo aggiungere altro???

  • Taylor Woodson

The story was interesting and I did enjoy the ending however there were too many things throughout the story that just felt unbelievable to me. Plus the writing felt like something I could have drafted up in high school. I don’t know how many times the author used the word “rummaged”.

  • Fran Burdsall

Actually more like 3 1/2 stars - it wasn't a bad story. Had a good twist in the end. Characters are OK and I suspect other books in the series will be even better than this first story. If you're looking for a strong female detective series, this one has potential.

  • Heather

    Well done. Quick read.
