Although better than some of the 1 star wonders I've suffered through from this author, it's still pretty yawn-worthy and cringeworthy. Emily Benton-Riggs is the titular girl, who has just survived somebody running her care off the road. Her rich ex-husband is dead, and she had just been at the will reading, where he left her a mansion and the artwork she acquired for it, worth millions of dollars, and the rest of the family isn't happy about it.
Conveniently on the road with her near about the same time is lawyer Connor Gallagher. He vows to remain by her side as she recuperates, but the attempts on Emily's life continue. Despite dying on the operating table a few times and being in an induced coma, Emily makes a speedy recovery, and she and Connor try to find out which member of her ex-husband's family is trying to murder her.
Admittedly, this gets off to a fairly decent start, dropping the reader straight into the action and efficiently laying out the reasons why somebody would want to kill our protagonist. Considering the fact some authors can't even be bothered to take that step (**cough, Barb Han, cough**), that's nothing to be, erm...coughed at. Unfortunately, after that good set-up, the book flounders and doesn't seem to know what to do with itself.
For about 80% of the book, in between perfunctory unsuccessful attempts on Emily's life, the story is little more than discussions about Emily's recovery, and what she is and isn't capable of doing. Or Emily arguing that she can do more than what the doctors say she should. It. Was. So. Boring. Emily and Connor have little spats about Connor doing too much for her, which reminds her too much of her ex-husband (who was a serial cheater.)
Connor is a bit of a wet blanket of a hero. He feels jealous that Emily's husband saw her first, because Connor thinks he would have been perfect for her. So he's just kinda stood by for 8 years, pining for her, which I find kind of gross, to be honest. And although protective of Emily, he's not quite the hero you usually get in Intrigue. Instead, he's hiring PIs and bodyguards to handle her safety....only to argue with them whenever they tell him what to do in regards to Emily's safety. Every. Single. Time.
Although Miles somewhat reigns in her tendency for misplaced screwball comedy, it still creeps in now and then. Wriggling your eyebrows is not something anyone does. Ever. It has no place in modern society, unless you're watching a badly acted 80s/90s movie.
Despite a better plot than what Miles usually provides, and one that is decently wrapped up (hooray), I was still majorly bored. There was way too much discussion about Emily's recovery, and she and Connor never came alive for me, nor their romance. I wouldn't mind seeing side character FBI agent Jaiden Wellborn getting his own book. African-American, shaved head, snappy dresser, crocodile shoes. Mmm mmm mmm. He got my fires burning far more than Connor did! -
A suspense tale to die for!
The title intrigued me, and the story that followed it delivered, big time.
As the chapters progressed, Emily’s plight—and her tenuous hold on life—grew more perilous. Connor Gallagher is a strong protagonist, the kind of man I’d want near me if my life were in danger. Miles sketches Emily’s character with bold strokes. Emily is smart and sexy, but most pleasantly, the pages also reveal her compassion and strength. The dialogue between her and Connor is charming and crisp. Evil lurks in abundance, with interesting supporting characters. Miles’ narrative made me laugh out loud at points, always a pleasant surprise, and her plotting is strong and fresh. I highly recommend it. -
Cassie does a great job with this book. Someone wants Emily Benton-Riggs dead but that ain't happening. Thanks to her friend and attorney Conner Gallagher. The secrets people keep can catch up with them. That's what happened to Emily's husband. Then a series of events happens that will keep you turning the pages to see what is happening to Emily and Conner. In life people who have secrets cause a ripped effect and that is the case here. Because of her husband's decisions Emily is caught in the middle. Cassie does a great job with this story with the right balance of action and story. I found it fascinating to read.

What a great story..I loved every minute of it. It kept me on the edge of my seat throughout. It had really enjoyable main characters, PLENTY of action and surprises and more than enough bad guys or girls to fill in the suspect list. Of course there were also some pretty good "good guys and gals" as well. There is also a touch of romance as well.
Emily had quite the difficult life but she had managed to make some successes in it too. She had made solid friends and could number Conner as one of them. Of course although he had honored hs best friend's marriage to Emily he still has loved her from a far for quite some time. Emily's ex, Jamison was someone that Conner had begun to suspect wasn't quite on the level in some of his business dealings. And when Conner began to ask questions, Jamison changed lawyers. It doesn't take too long after Jamison's death to find out he had a lot of stuff going on.
Emily had been faithful throughout her marriage but did have a moment or two of attraction to Conner while still married. Neither one of them acted on it but did become friends. And that friendship does strengthen as they both try to figure out who is trying to kill Emily and why. Conner proves himself on her side time and again, even though a time or two he does make a minor mistake or two. Emily has had to be self sufficient/independent and will not put up with being out of the loop when it comes to knowing what's going on.
I really appreciated the cast of characters list at the beginning of the book. There is a dramatic end to the story with several additional twists. Like I said, what a great story! -
Well constructed mystery, with clues that sink to the back of your mind enough to surprise you when they pop up again. The ending kind of cuts the suspense off at the knees, though. I won't spoil, but it's basically like she realizes who the bad guy is, a henchman is shot, the bad guy threatens to shoot her, there's a brief scuffle, and right as it's getting messy and complicated and someone wrestles the gun away, the police conveniently flood the house ending the whole thing and we get one sentence of cooldown ("while the police began the forensics on so-and-so") and then a half page of her romantic interest shuffling her into a back room. Then it's just over.
So that was disappointing, but it was still overall good. -
The Girl Who Wouldn't Stay Dead will have you on edge of your chair. With three murder attempts and more to come it takes a whole team to protected a woman who just want to be free of a ex husband and his family only what she got was a whole lot of trouble. Go grab a copy and fined out what happens.

Love Cassie Miles. She is one of my go to authors for Intrigues. She writes so great, from the first sentence you are hooked in the story. I have almost read every book she has ever read. Love them.
