The Second Wife authored by British novelist Angela Arney, is an interesting story of family life in a blended family. Felicity Hughes, 35, was widowed for 9 years when she married her second husband Tony, a doctor and surgeon in an unnamed Hampshire hospital, and the father of three. As expected, Felicity navigated several challenges and obstacles as she and her teen daughter Annabel became part of the Hughes family at their established Cherry Trees country home in Oakford.
The Hughes simple garden wedding and reception took place in the vicarage at Saint Matthew’s. Tony hadn’t introduced his children Hilary, Philip and Peter to his new bride before the wedding, so they understandably weren’t in the best frame of mind or attitude to celebrate. Felicity was dismayed to see Annabel gulp down an entire glass of champagne amongst her more obnoxious relatives. The Hughes children were outright rude and hostile to their new stepmother. Felicity’s socially conscious mother Irene invited Tony’s beautiful elegant former wife Samantha and her snobbish elitist new boyfriend Piers Berkley Holmes to the wedding. Understandably, this was quite unnerving and unsettling for the bride on her special day, since she knew nothing about their attendance beforehand.
The storyline centers around Felicity and Samantha and the choices they make that impact this large family. Felicity worked as an editorial director at Dickens Books, a small publishing house in London, and seemed to feel a bit diminished with the continual comparisons between herself and the glamourous Samantha. Irene warned Felicity of the difficulties she would encounter attempting to manage a family under the shadow of a seemingly successful first wife. But, Samantha had left Tony and the children to start over with Piers, a popular wealthy literary celebrity. Things are not as they seem within this family. This is a dramatic narrative with several engaging and fun turns in the storyline. Some characters were more developed than others, for example we learn very little about Tony’s character except through the observations of others. Overall, this was an enjoyable read, Arney seemed to eager to present the conclusion in a neatly wrapped packaged deal, some of which wasn’t very believable or realistic. ~3* GOOD.
