Remember Thy Oath: A 19th Century Historical Murder Mystery Novella (The Agora Mystery Series Book 8) Reviews

This is a 4.5 star read.
Another exciting mystery solved by the Agora Society, this one involving pirates! I just love this quaint, old fashioned series - it's remarkably well written, with a prose reminiscent of the era but without the "flowery-ness" that often makes these sort of stories hard to read. -
Remember Thy Oath - a review by Rosemary Kenny
As a young man Edison escaped hanging on a pirate ship and fled, leaving his fellow captives to pay the price. Swearing an oath he thought he'd never have to honour, Edison later became a member of the Agora Society and forgot about his secret past.
Clay Boutwell masterfully tells this tale of a historical murder and the mysterious events that preceded and follow it, in his 8th novella in the Agora Mystery Series. Remember Thy Oath.is narrated by the engaging character Carl and it's full of well-rounded personalities, love and hatred, loyalty and treachery, pride and downfall with plenty of action right up to the well-written end. You'll thrill as the plot thickens, hide your horror at the cruelty of the 19th century in which this story is set and welcome the comradeship shown by Edison's fellow Society members who are real friends too.
Sail away to the bookstore and buy this (and the previous 7 tales), today, me hearties - it will take you on an exciting voyage of discovery that you can share with all your friends! -
Remember Thy Oath: A 19th Century Historical Murder Mystery by
Clay Boutwell
I remember I hated one of the books in this series. I must have been going through a bad time, or the one I read was truly terrible, but I take it all back.
This one I liked.
The series is a number of short stories, a bit like the original Sherlock Holmes intrigues that were published periodically in The Strand Magazine beginning in 1891.
They relate to a group of Gentlemen (no women allowed) who meet each Sunday afternoon in a club (The AGORA Society) upstairs from an antique bookshop, … ”to do nothing but share the discoveries we gained from whatever material we brought.” They also had a weekly meeting on Monday evening it seems.
Many interesting and novel issues take up their time, but usually, in the end, they are focussed on some type of heinous or violent crime.
The men then, alone and in company of Captain Barnwell of the local constabulary, manage to solve this crime in no more time than a current TV show.
Not being a student of past times, I am not sure of the historical verisimilitude of the stories, but it really doesn’t matter. They are stories, after-all.
In this tale, one of the Agora Society members is found to be not the person they all know. Confusion reins, and after some twists and dead ends, all is resolved. Life goes on as before.
The writing is engaging, the characters a tad one dimensional, but a pleasant way to spend a summer afternoon with a cool wine, or a winter evening with a snifter of brandy.
I’ll read some more of these as time goes by. -
Used to be Kindle Unlimited, don't think he does it that way any more. I like to keep up with certain writers though.
A hidden identity. A mysterious priest. An oath left unfulfilled.
Edison, the most proper member of the Agora Society, hides a past he thought was long buried. The sudden appearance of a strange priest, however, reveals secrets that demand Edison honor an oath made long ago.
With news of the imminent arrival of assassins, can the members of the Agora Society and Captain Barnwell discover the truth in time to save a friend?

Set in old Boston, members of the Agora society gather at least weekly. When one of their members, Edison, seems to be in trouble, Carl and Otto search for him along with a strange priest. Edison has a past that is coming back to haunt him. More than just haunt, someone wants Edison dead. This is another good story in the Agora Letters series. The plot has just enough twists and surprises to be believable and the characters are interesting as always. If you like Sherlock Holmes stories, then Remember Thy Oath is for you. I loved it!

Enjoyable historical mystery.
The 'Agora Society' series is thoroughly enjoyable. It is written in a style reminiscent of Arthur Conan Doyle, with all the courtesy and manners that one would expect from that age, and of course no modern slang or bad language.
The mystery in this case is multi-layered and takes some very unexpected twists, until it is all unravelled at the end, with an exciting climax.
These books are a very welcome diversion from modern mysteries and thrillers and provide pleasant short reads.
I received an advance copy of this book, but have voluntarily reviewed it. -
This mystery is set in 1880s Boston and the Agora Society is a special men's group that meets on a regular basis. One of it's most popular members Edison has a secret that he has kept hidden for many years. When a strange priest shows up after an article in the local newspaper upsets Edison. Edison then disappears and the society searches for him. When they finally find him, Edison tells them the secret of his past. From there things get hairy and the society must work together to save Edison. This is an awesome mystery with an excellent cast of characters and an exceptional conclusion.

All of these mysteries, this one is no exception, provide the twists, turns and excitement in a well told, relatively short story. Burn up your Kindle, page turning suspense, keeps you guessing until the very end, filled with action that will have you riveted to this novella so much so, you might consider a comfy spot where you won't be disturbed so you can finish this in one sitting. Clay continues to provide the stories that mystery lovers want to read! Although you don't have to read the others first, you won't be sorry if you do. Another winner from this talented author!

This short story is very well written. When a young Edison took an oath, he really thought that part of his life was over with. Then a strange priest comes and tells him that he needs to honor thy oath. Edison takes off from the Society. His friends aren't going to let him go down this path alone. They are there for him and are going to help him. Your in for a wild read! Do enjoy!!! I voluntarily reviewed an ARC of this book.

Great story. Nice and short for a quickie interesting read.
Can be read by itself . Do not need to have read any others in this series. I had read number two a bit ago and now this one. Each story appears to be all by itself, yes there are references to previous stories but it is just that this 'event' happened. I did not feel like I was missing anything.
This is my honest and freely given review. I did receive an ARC book. -
Another excellent short in the Agora Society collection of difficult mysteries as related by Carl. Excellent characters and storyline with plenty of plot twists and an abundance of suspense. Don't miss this one!
-
The Agora mysteries are so well written that they bring the 19th century to life. The author's description of each character allows the reader to see them while reading the story. Perfect length for a cold, wet day cuddled with a soft throw and a hot cup of cocoa. Love these books.

My review of Remember Thy Oath
I lived it! Another masterpiece of one of my favourite series! I couldn’t put it down. I wonder if Carl and his nemesis will finally battle it out. This is a must read series! I can’t wait for the next book. -
A short thriller which can be read in a morning or an afternoon, this one is suitable for all but the youngest of readers. I read an ARC and this voluntary review is my own opinion.

Pirates!
Legally, duress negates contracts, but pirates don't operate under the law. Can The Agora Society save the day? Author Clay Boutwell narrates his own story to perfection.
