How The Best Hunter In The Village Met Her Death Reviews

Bought from the author at FlameCon 2018, had a very sweet chat with her. It’s a short comic, but it’s vivid in color and emotion and imagery. I felt my eyes stinging on the last page and I can tell I’ll be reading it over and over. Molly’s really hit it out of the park on this one.

Utterly astounding

A beautiful, Ignatz-award-winning short story from the author of The Witch Boy. The hunter of the title was left outside a small village as a baby. She was raised by a villager and takes pride in her ability to provide for her adopted community. But an encounter with a beast from the woods shakes her life to it's very core- her identity as a villager, a hunter, a wife and even as a human being are all called into question.

I picked this up on a whim at TCAF 2018 and I've read it more times than I care to admit in the several months since then. Molly's art and writing in this book are superb, and I can already feel the influence it is having on my own work as a creator.

A wonderful parable of a woman finding herself in a community that wants to define her. Although short this book packs in a lot to think about - almost like poetry each word carries meaning and nuance. A thoroughly enjoyable read.

I absorbed this as an allegorical but seriously raw meditation on what confronting your identity while wrestling internalized homophobia or transphobia feels like.
But maybe I'm over-reading.
It's also a tense and very well-executed adventure story. Recommended. -
I loved it. Read it in a day and it sat with me all week. Picked up at FlameCon 2018, and what a special gift this short story is. Beautifully illustrated, haunting and lovely.

This should be a really high quality physical book. I love it. Lots of room to maneuver metaphor or seek symbolism.

The art is beautiful, the story is gorgeous, I just loved this so much. I’ll read anything from this author.

A short, succinct, and poetic metaphor for comphet and becoming true to yourself. A perfect short story in comic format.

Slowly falling in love with Molly Knox Ostertag's work...

a really beautiful story about pursuing your self. the bravery of choosing yourself. what you lose when you do. euphoric.

I read this short comic on a train journey, twice in a row.
The story is about a hunter who encounters a ferocious beast on her hunt, and is completely consumed by her desire to hunt it. It's about finding out who you are and coming to grips with some parts of yourself. It's a really multi-layered and fascinating story with a great, smooth illustration style, and I read it twice in a row to try to capture the story better, even though I still don't think I got all of it. The atmosphere of it was also very strong, and I wasn't ready to let go of it after one read. Highly recommended.
This is available on the creator's Gumroad, and won the 2018 Ignatz award for Outstanding Story – the Ignatz is an award that honors small-press or self-published comics. -
Short and sweet. Not my favorite from Ostertag but nice to see some of her earlier/indie work.
