I always love dropping in on Lena and Camilla in the scenic Blue Lake!!
In this fourth installment in the series, Lena needs to find out why Jane Wyland made a visit to Camilla, making ominous threats about exposing Camilla’s deceased husband’s secrets. It becomes especially urgent when shortly after issuing what basically amounted to an ultimatum, Jane is found dead, making Camilla a possible suspect…
This is such a terrific mystery series! I enjoyed getting to know more about Camilla in this episode. She's always remained a bit mysterious up to this point. But I think what really appealed to me about this installment was that it was a cold case, an old mystery that needed to be solved- which is one of my favorite crime tropes.
While this series definitely fits into the cozy genre, it doesn’t use the typical format and should appeal to anyone who enjoys pure mysteries or crime fiction. This installment was especially perplexing, keeping me on my toes from start to finish, and had a heart racing finale!
Naturally, the recurring characters are always the biggest draw in a cozy series, and the ending of this chapter in the series was also rewarding.
While I have enjoyed all the books in the series, this installment was one of the strongest installments to date. I’m looking forward to touching base with these terrific characters again soon!!

An cozy mystery set in the quiet town of Blue Lake. This series features a novelist, Camilla and her apprentice, Lena. It is #4 in the Writer's Apprentice Series. I read it as a stand-alone and it worked out just fine.
Jane Wyland shows up at Camilla's house and threatens to spread rumors about her late husband if she doesn't reveal his secret past. Jane is murdered soon after and .... the ladies team up to help solve this small town murder mystery.
Enjoyed the setting, mystery and the sweet dogs and kittens that made an appearance. There were a few too many suspects in my opinion and I had trouble keeping some of the clues straight. I can't say that I solved this one. The pace was good and this was an enjoyable, light read.
I would definitely read more cozies from this series/author. -

I found Camilla to be such an intriguing figure in this novel. She’s reserved, talented, and distant. Yet she seems to be charmed by the most simple of life’s pleasures—pizza, for instance, is a novelty to Camilla. A party with friends is another novelty Camilla seems to not let herself experience. I loved seeing her wonder as she branched out a bit!
Lena herself has a fascinating storyline this book. When an accident occurs and it appears it may not have been so accidental, mysterious events follow. Lena finds herself hovering just on the edge of the answers she seeks, and she begins to doubt herself. Was it a memory or a fabrication?
This was ultimately a slightly different, but no less engaging, type of cozy. The murkiness of memory and the past seem to cast a shadow over the characters, giving it a somewhat ethereal feel. The mystery, though firmly grounded in reality, had a haunting feel to it made more prominent by Lena’s accident and reaction to her medication. And then there is a secret long buried in the past threatening to come to light.
A fresh twist on a cozy mystery that left me delighted!! Thank you to Berkley for my copy. Opinions are my own. -
If you’re looking for spine-tingling events in a cozy mystery, the Writer’s Apprentice series satisfies in all ways. It’s summertime in Blue Lake, Indiana, and someone starts a killing spree. Both Lena London and Camilla Graham possess excellent instincts and they’ll need every nuance when life actually mirrors the fiction they write. I opened the pages and settled down to read this amazing plot where a murderer attempts to silence two of my favorite cozy mystery protagonists.
A woman from the past surfaces and threatens to expose a huge secret about Camilla’s deceased husband, James. Someone doesn’t want the secret revealed. My heart began pounding as Author Julia Buckley ambushed me chapter after chapter with unexpected plot twists that kept me on the edge of my seat. The wonderful men in Lena and Camilla’s lives work overtime to keep them safe until a madman is caught and put behind bars. These men are great secondary characters and heroes for their ladies. I tried to decipher all the clues in hopes of figuring out the assailant’s identity, however, I was stymied right up to the author reveal.
Relatable, flawed characters; dogs and kitties; intense suspense; and a swooner of an ending make this fourth book in the series a top-notch reading experience!

***2021 Dog Days of Summer***
It's time for my summer theme and this year I have chosen to read books that include canine companions. This series includes two German Shepherds, Heathcliff and Rochester. These good boys are still part of the action, although not featuring directly in the plot of this fourth book of the series. They are rather overshadowed by four abandoned kittens.
Buckley delves into Blue Lake history, where Camilla's late husband, James Graham, grew up. Lena and Camilla throw themselves into another investigation and the author has the inspired idea to have them read James' pre-marriage letters to Camilla for clues to what went on in 1971. There's no doubt that they have got on someone's last nerve, as mysterious, deadly events start to happen around the two women.
Early in the novel, Lena and Camilla are involved in a car crash and Lena's arm is badly broken. She not only has to struggle with a threatening situation, but a heavy cast and a reaction to the pain medication. She starts to question everything. But this is a cozy mystery, so I read on with the confidence that everything would get resolved.
I may as well come clean at this point and admit how much I dislike Camilla's love interest, Adam. I've been waiting for four books for him to be revealed as a villain and for four books I've been disappointed. This book sinks my theories completely as Adam gets his moment to shine.
There's just one volume left in this series and I hope to read it next month. As cozy mysteries go, this one is very good. Lena and Camilla may poke their noses into police business, but they aren't disrespectful and they share their findings. They leave the official investigating to Doug and Cliff, their friends on the force, and they concentrate on research and unofficial sources that the police don't have access to or time for. I'm going to feel a bit wistful when I finish these novels. -

Summer has come to Blue Lake, Indiana, and with it the heat. Lena London and her mentor, bestselling author Camilla Graham, are trying to finish their latest manuscript, but the heat is making it hard to concentrate. However, a visit from Jane Wyland doesn’t prove to be a welcome distraction. Jane and Camilla were acquainted when Camilla first moved to the United States from England, but the two haven’t spoken in decades. Jane arrives to tell Camilla that she knows the secret the Graham family has been hiding, and Jane is going to share it with the world if Camilla doesn’t step up and acknowledge it first.
The trouble is, Camilla doesn’t know what secret Jane is talking about even when Jane implies that it is something from Camilla’s husband’s past. The next day, Camilla and Lena go to try to get more information from Jane so they can figure out what has the woman so upset. However, when they arrive, they discover that Jane has been murdered. What was this secret from the past, and did it get Jane killed?
As much as I enjoyed the first three books in this series, it was nice to see the plot move away from Lena’s boyfriend and focus on another character. This change also allowed the book to have even more of a gothic feel to it than the first three. While I’m not super familiar with that genre, I was definitely able to recognize elements of it as the book unfolded, and I enjoyed seeing how it was combined seamlessly with elements of a cozy mystery. The result works and we get a story that drew me in each time I picked up the book and made it hard to put down. The usual cast of characters are still here, and it was great to see them. The suspects didn’t get much page time, but they work perfectly for the story as it is told here since the main drive was to figure out what secret from the past upset Jane so much. This is a fun twist on the cozy mystery, and if you are looking for something slightly different, be sure to pick it up.

Book 4 in the series, which must be read in order. This fits in the "Cozy" genre, but is so well written, it can be enjoyed by all mystery lovers. I have immensely enjoyed every book in the series, and I highly recommend.

I have been a fan of this series from the beginning and each one continues to deliver a well plotted mystery full of artfully crafted characters. This installment is my favorite one yet. Ms. Buckley has crafted characters that are genuine, relatable, flawed and mature. The relationship between Lena and Camilla is one that continues to grow and evolve which is part of what keeps me coming back. I like that as the series continues we are getting to know the secondary cast of characters as the mysteries are no longer centered on Sam West, Lena's boyfriend. The mystery was well done and grabbed me from the start. This author knows how to wind clues throughout the plot to keep her readers guessing. The mystery in this story involved something that happened in the past, causing Lena and Camilla to revisit the time when Camilla first came to Blue Lake and married James.
This is a terrific series and if you haven't given it a try I would highly encourage it. It is well written with smart characters that pay an homage to the Gothic genre and mysteries that keep the reader engaged and interested until the final reveal. This series is an automatic pre-order for me and I look forward to many more hours of enjoyment from this author. -
With the Writer’s Apprentice Mysteries, author Julia Buckley continues to show that a cozy mystery can be a little more intense without going too far. It’s almost as if she has channeled the great traditional mystery authors who have come before her.
DEATH WAITS IN THE DARK is by far my favorite story in this series to date. That’s saying something considering how much I enjoyed the first three. Julia Buckley just seems to have pulled out all of the stops with this one. I was so caught up in every aspect of the story. It’s a wonderfully plotted mystery for sure, but it was so much more than that to me.
I was enthralled with the past correspondence between James Graham and Camilla Easton at the beginning of each chapter of DEATH WAITS IN THE DARK. I honestly could read an entire book of nothing but that. (Hmmm…Ms. Buckley, what do you say? “THE LETTERS OF JAMES GRAHAM AND CAMILLIA EASTON”. I’ll be the first to pre-order it!)
I could go on and on with my review of DEATH WAITS IN THE DARK. I have so much I want to say! But I think it’s best to just say this . . . Read this book! If you are a fan of the series already, you are in for such a treat! If you haven’t read any of this series yet, please, get them all now and read them back to back.

Death Waits in the Dark is the first book I have read of Julie Buckley, and I was impressed with the plot and the way she describes her settings. Death Waits in the Dark is a lovely cozy mystery you would enjoy to read on a cold winter day sitting near the fire with a cup tea and your favourite biscuits. I love Julia Buckley portrayal of her characters and the way they intertwine with each other throughout the book. Death in the Dark is well written and researched by Julia Buckley. I like that Julia Buckley uses animals in her story allowing you to laugh while you read Death Waits in the Dark.
The readers of Death Waits in the Dark will learn about obsession, mental illness, and revenge. Also, the readers will see that you can find love second-time.

Death Waits in the Dark is the fourth book in the A Writer’s Apprentice Mystery series and this book follows a different path than the previous books. In this story, Lena and Camilla are adjusting to life together as roommates and things are settling down very nicely. There has been some random vandalism taking place around town but it was nothing that really concerned either of them. Although, when a blast from Camilla’s past confronts her about a supposed secret but then ends up dead, Camilla and Lena take it upon themselves to try and discover what possible secret Camilla’s late husband could have been keeping that was worth killing over.
Solving the mystery in this story was spearheaded by both Lena and Camilla but truly all the supporting characters in this story had a part to play in the process. I loved that the story was layers of history that had to be peeled back layer after layer to bring the events that took place decades before to light. There were many characters to suspect in this murder mystery and it was fun to follow the clues to try and eliminate the suspects until only one remained. Although I did have my suspicions, I was not truly sure until the reveal and what a reveal it was. The ending was not what I was expecting but it was truly a swoon inspiring ending and it captured my interest in continuing this series. Death Waits in the Dark was one heck of a whodunit and I would definitely recommend it to lovers of cozy mysteries.

The story picks up from where the last book left off so I strongly suggest you read them in order.

I love reading about Blue Lake and the inhabitants. The small town and characters I have grown to love are a winning combination.
The writing is first rate and this book is one I highly recommend.

I have read and enjoyed the first three books in this series. I love Lena and her relationship with Camilla. The secondary characters are well-written and likable. I have to say, though, that this book is the best in the series so far. It definitely has the feel of a Mary Stewart or Phyllis A. Whitney story. Also, once I started the book, I couldn’t put it down. I highly recommend it!

Graham House was a respite from the late-June heat, especially in the air-conditioned office of me collaborator and hero, Camilla Graham.
Lena London works with Camilla Graham in small town Blue Lake, Indiana. Camilla is the author of numerous suspense novels and Lena is her eager apprentice. A former classmate of Camilla's late husband, James, appears one day with threats to tarnish the Graham name. The woman is found dead soon after and James' friends join with Lena and Camilla to discover what happened.
I rarely start a series somewhere other than the beginning. However, I was able to get into the storyline and figure out who the characters were. The characters are well written and likeable. There is a bit of history between Lena and her boyfriend, Sam, that I will need to go back and read to fully understand. There is enough information given for me to understand how their relationship evolved.
One of my favorite things was the letters that James had written to Camilla while she was still in England after their engagement. There is just something so special about the written word. It was touching that she had kept all of his letters. This gave the book an almost Edwardian feel.
Lena and Sam seem to have a solid relationship. I love his tender side that had him stop to rescue a lost kitten. Gotta love a man that loves cats! Sam is someone that I want to delve into further which means I will be reading the previous books.
Camilla and Adam are quite a pair as well. I'm happy that her late husband's old friend is there for her with obvious adoration.
I always enjoy when an author incorporates animals into a storyline. The lovely names of Heathcliff and Rochester for Camilla's German Shepherds makes me smile.
The mystery is solid with a few twists and turns. You begin to suspect everyone of James' old friends. The letters paint a vivid picture of the group when they were in high school and later. It eventually leads to the killer.
There are crazy crashes, an artistic vandal and good friends to round out the book. This is a lovely book to read while sipping a cup of tea with a dozing cat or dog on your lap.

It’s midsummer in Blue Lake, Indiana. Folks are gearing up for the Fourth of July celebrations while Lena and Camilla are hoping to make progress on their next novel. Everything comes to a halt when a mysterious lady suddenly shows up on their doorstep threatening to reveal a secret about Camilla’s late husband. A secret that would definitely tarnish his family name. Before they can confront the past, the lady is found murdered and it’s quite clear someone is trying to hide something.
I really enjoyed this mystery as well as Buckley’s writing style. The characters and storyline have a mature feel to it. Their interactions and even the circumstances they find themselves in seem incredibly realistic and not something that they just lightheartedly stumbled upon. Digging into the past was a wonderful way to learn more about Camilla, her husband and their friends. The mystery kept me guessing until the very end because there were quite a few questionable suspects. I was hooked the moment the accident happened and a main character got seriously injured. Usually in cozies this happens towards the end so it was interesting to see how those extra challenges became a big part of the storyline.
This is the first book I’ve read in this series. After a few chapters, I had no problem distinguishing who they were and I never felt lost or confused. I will definitely go back and read the previous three books though so I can learn how a few relationships came to be. I’m especially intrigued by the new romances and the stepbrothers. There was also a side story including vandalism that I’d like to get more information on the background on the people involved.
I look forward to returning to the charming town on Blue Lake soon. The cast has left me intrigued and I can’t wait to see these new, adorable pets make more appearances in future books. A sneak peek is included for book 5: Death With a Dark Red Rose. -
I love this series as mentioned in my review of the third novel in the Writer's Apprentice Mystery Series but sometimes a series is so wonderful to read that you just want to say it again and again!
In the previous novels of the series, there have been a few sentences at the beginning of each chapter from the new writing collaboration by Camilla and Lena. It's been absolutely amazing how the few sentences as the lead italicized heading of each chapter also seem to simultaneously reflect the day-to-day adventures of Lena and Camilla as they write mysteries there is also a real life mystery to solve. In "Death Waits in the Dark" there are again a few sentences at the beginning of each chapter but this time they are "from the correspondence of James Graham and Camilla Easton, 1971," prior to Camilla's arrival in the United States to become the bride of James Graham. There is definitely a real-life mystery to solve and with each passing day Camilla and Lena become more dependent on the old letters to provide the clues to solve the mystery and return their lives to "normal."
Author Julia Buckley also provides a special surprise to delight not only her beloved main characters of this series but especially for her pet loving readers.

Death Waits in the Dark is the fourth book in the Writers Apprentice series. If you haven't read the other three books yet, I HIGHLY recommend that you do so. This is one of my favorite cozy mystery series.
Lena and Camilla are at home (Camilla's house) in Blue Lake, Indiana when an angry woman appears at Camilla's door. After she has left, Camilla explains that the woman (Jane) is someone from Blue Lake who knew Camilla's late husband James years ago. Jane claims to know a secret from the past that could "ruin" James' and his family's reputation. The next day, the woman is found mysteriously dead in her own home in Blue Lake. Lena and Camilla now want to get to the bottom of two different mysteries: how and why was Jane murdered, and what was the "secret" she claimed to know?
We meet several suspects, some of whom appear in the previous books and some of whom are new to the story. Clues are revealed through old photos and letters. Lena's faith in her friends and other townspeople is shaken, but the truth will be revealed for better or worse.
On a side note, I am friends with this author on Facebook, and she sometimes asks her readers questions and posts polls on our opinions. I was very flattered and surprised when I opened this book and found my own name in the acknowledgments! -
Phew, a lot of things happen in this book. A lot of dramatic things.
I certainly did not see most of them coming so in many ways it was a wild ride.
I feel like I'm getting to know these characters now and they do feel like real people. However, my over-all impression of "too perfect" is still intact. Sure, really serious things happen, but it works out. Somehow.
(The new vet might just be my new favourite character. Aside from the kittens, of course.)
In this book there's a certain reason why Lena's brain draws certain conclusions towards the end to make all the necessary connections to solve the whole thing, but that reason alone felt a bit far-fetched, somehow.
I quite honestly didn't really pick up on the paranoia at first because Lena has been sort of paranoid before in the previous books. Quite honestly, after everything she's been through it's amazing she's not got full fledged PTSD and needs trauma counselling, but yeah, I guess that's a little bit inconvenient for a character in a cosy mystery to get stuck with.
I wasn't really convinced by the drug induced paranoia because frankly I didn't find the paranoia severe enough - but it sure was a new, fresh aspect I haven't stumbled upon in a book before so... I kind of liked it.
Then we had the ending. Of course. That thing I did see coming. 😇 -
This is the exciting fourth in the Writer's Apprentice series, each one progressively better than the prior. The author weaves a multifaceted mystery that is beyond compare - the lovely little town in Indiana (despite summer humidity), the seasoned author, and her helper and now collaborator.
Camilla Graham is originally from England, moving to the US in 1971 to marry her beloved James Graham who passed away several years ago. Lena London is her assistant and co-author of the most recent of her suspense novels. One day a woman named Jane came to see Camilla; it had been several decades since seeing her last. They had never been considered friends, Jane is not even cordial during this visit. She told Camilla she would be back the next day to learn her choice - either Camilla would reveal the deep, dark secret of the Graham family or Jane would. Camilla has no idea what she is talking about, and Jane is so upset that she won't say anything more. Nobody will know what Jane's accusations are now, as she was murdered during the night.
What seems to have triggered the distressing visit from Jane is that she had recently been to her younger sister's funeral in Chicago. Little sister Carrie had left suddenly the year that Camilla and James were wed, but nobody ever knew why. Now James and Carrie seem to be part of a rumor mill that Camilla refuses to believe. She and Lena state they will get to the bottom of the situation, at least until Lena's life is almost lost in a car crash that sends them off the road.
Most of the characters are delightful, from the hardware store owner's wife, Marge, to Lena's boyfriend Sam, and Sam's half-brother Cliff. They are ready to step out of the pages into the beautiful area of Blue Lake, Indiana.
This complex mystery drew me in from the beginning, and held my attention throughout. It is hard to narrow down the suspect list to just one person, and I finally gave up to simply enjoy the read and find out who the bad guy or gal really is. And there is much to enjoy, including the wildlife and beautiful scenery! The end is full of surprises, some very pleasant and others will see justice done. I highly recommend Dead Waits in the Dark!

Lena London and Camilla Graham are working on their latest book when Camilla gets a visit from Jane Wyland, someone she and her late husband knew years ago. But this isn’t a friendly visit – Jane insists Camilla revel her late husband’s secret but Camilla says she has no idea what Jane is talking about. However, before Camilla can find out, Jane is murdered. Lena and Camilla decide to investigate the murder and find out the secret Jane referred to but doing so will put them both in very real danger.
“Death Waits in the Dark” is the delightfully done fourth book in Julia Buckley’s Writer’s Apprentice Mystery series. I love everything about this series – the characters, the setting, Lena’s job (I want her job!), and especially the atmosphere. There is a wonderful gothic feeling about this series that Buckley does so well. It is especially well done in this book as Lena starts being mistrustful of everyone – so believably done by Buckley. The mystery itself is well done – I loved reading the book as Lena and Camilla investigated past events – Camilla’s husband may be dead but he came to life as a character in this book. There is plenty of suspense in this book especially as Lena and Camilla come closer to the truth. The identity of the killer came as a surprise to me which is exactly what I want when I read this type of mystery.
I enjoyed “Death Waits in the Dark” so much, I almost reread it right after I finished reading it! Well done! -

Julia Buckley’s A Writer’s Apprentice Mystery series is one of my favorite cozy mystery series. I've said this before, I don't read this series to try and figure out who the killer is. I read it to simply enjoy where Julia and the story takes me. I love the main and secondary characters. Every time I open a book, it's like hanging out with old friends.
In the course of less than a year, Lena London has moved to a new town. She’s met Camilla Graham, mystery author and her childhood idol. Lena is living out a dream, by co-writing books with Camilla. She even lives with Camilla, in Camilla’s large castle like house. More importantly, Lena has found love with her neighbor Sam West. Death Waits in the Dark is the fourth book in the series. But it is the first book that isn’t about Sam and him dealing with his past, thus making it a standalone read. Death Waits in the Dark deals with Camilla’s past. Or more accurately, the past of her late husband James and his friends, including Adam, Camilla’s new beau and James’s best friend. The story chronicles the love James has for Camilla through letters. In fact, this story is about love, friendship, courage, strength, and humanity.
I love the way the mystery played out. Julia has written this story in such a way that you can’t help questioning everything you read. For me, there were definitely some heart pounding, heart stopping moments. I loved the ending of the book. But at the same time, I didn’t want it to end. I’m looking forward to the next book in this series.

Number four in the Writer's Apprentice series has Lena and Camilla investigating Camilla's late husband's past after one of his friends is killed. I continue to enjoy this fun series, but there are just some off turns of phrases that give me pause. It's probably a regional thing and I usually get what they're going for by context, but there are places that just don't flow well and make me read them three or four times. It's mildly frustrating.

4.5 stars. Another wonderful book in this series. Blue Lake is very much a town I would love to visit. The characters are well rounded and I love the pets. Being mystery writers is a bonus. If you like cozy mysteries, pick this series up.
