    3.5 stars rounded down!
I love the concept of this series - following the same house through different time periods - but felt a few cautions merited rounding It down. The main character breaks a big rule of the school she attends at No 6 Chelsea walk and there is no real consequence for the character and the mother of the character slaps her for insolence. I understand that is historically correct but not sure it needed to be included for the age group this it targeted at.
That being said, with those cautions, I would recommend this as a fun way to see how times change & to start conversations about that between you and your reader!

I really like the premise of this series-following the house through various periods in history and seeing the stories of the girls who live there. However this book fell a bit flat for me. Despite the final sentences in the last chapter, it felt as though the overarching message was that Mary Ann must give up her dreams in order to fit in with societal norms and conform to her family’s position in society. It seems like Turnbull tried to fix this impression by adding the last few sentences in the last chapter but instead they had a different effect. It made the ending feel abrupt, leaving the reader with unanswered questions. This book gets 3 stars from me.

It did not take long for me to become fully immersed in the life on Mary Ann at all and I could picture everything so clearly. Turnbull has a wonderful writing style that is easy to follow, while showing great characterisation and the building of setting.

I really wish I could have found out what Mary Ann went on to do after the storyline finished, but maybe this will come in one of the other books? It seems that the ticket falling into the panelling was a set up to be returned to.

I loved the story, but abrupt endings leave me with so many questions!

  • Michelle Bellman

A great introduction to the historical fiction genre for young readers.

  • Rose (Emma Watson's version)

It was cool, pretty simple historical book. Nothing special, but there was nothing bad to say about it too.

A story about a young girl who attends a boarding school near London, in 1764, and dreams of becoming an opera singer.
She attends a concert by Mozart and his older sister, when they were kids.
