I've never read Beowulf, so that comparison wasn't clear to me, but I LOVED this book. It's gripping and dark, with amazing themes of sisterhood and fellowship and the power of feminine friendship throughout. It truly reads like a classic epic, one you can picture being sung around campfires. It has a nice rhythm, with a tried and true formula of struggle after struggle for glory that leans into the classic hero's journey without getting repetitive.
