Sixteen-year-old Starr Carter moves between two worlds: the poor neighborhood where she lives and the fancy suburban prep school she attends. The uneasy balance between these worlds is shattered when Starr witnesses the fatal shooting of her childhood best friend Khalil at the hands of a police officer.
On the Come Up
Sixteen-year-old Bri wants to be one of the greatest rappers of all time. Or at least win her first battle. As the daughter of an underground hip hop legend who died right before he hit big, Bri's got massive shoes to fill. But it's hard to get your come up when you're labeled a hoodlum at school, and your fridge at home is empty after your mom loses her job. So Bri pours her anger and frustration into her first song, which goes viral...for all the wrong reasons.

Angie Thomas 2-Book Box Set: The Hate U Give and On the Come Up Reviews
-
I have a passion for box book sets, where I can sit and read a whole collection one after the other.
Although the author Angie Thomas is a former teen rapper On The Come Up grabbed my attention, with a young sixteen year old Bri who wants to be one of the greatest rappers of all time, and why not want that? Most young teenagers have some sort of an idea what they want to do with their lives and to me there's nothing wrong anyone at any age wanting to famous in some kind of way.
The story is quite heartbreaking where Bri has had a tough life with her mother who has an addiction and her fathers death.
I did feel for quite sad for Bri who sometimes she gets in to trouble at school. For Bri it was an incredible new record for her if she hadn't been sent to the principal's office.
Bri had been rapping since she was ten, but she didn't even know if she was good enough . Will she make it as rapper?
Some of the scenes are about poverty that's heartbreaking with no food in the fridge, but with first love of rapper music.
I know On The Come Up this is going to be a very popular book. But for any reader that hasn't read On The Come up or The Hate You Give, by Angie Thomas, who is a great writer that can put so many different emotions into each page to draw readers in.
I highly recommend this beautiful box collection by walker Books.
The Hate You Give is the first book by Angie Thomas., that is a page turner. You simply can't fail to love both books. I would like to say a huge very big thank you to walker books for sending me this lovely box set. -
This special boxed set of two Angie Thomas books is a great treat for anyone who doesn’t already own these two books. ‘The Hate U Give’ and ‘On the Come Up’ the first two books by Angie Thomas, are included here with their original UK covers. The books come in an outer sleeve-type box that’s made of card and fits nicely together and look good on any shelf.
I won’t go into too much detail about the books but if you’ve read even one of the books you’ll know that they are a powerful read and are definitely worth reading considering the subject matter, for example in ‘The Hate U Give’ a black teenager and friend of the main character Starr is shot unfairly by police one night with Starr as the only witness. Can she go to the police seeing as it was one of their own who shot her friend, and what will her white friends at the school that she goes to across town (in a white neighbourhood) or the black people of the community she lives in think if she does or doesn’t?
Although the titles are an interesting and powerful read I do feel I should point out that although the books are aimed at teenagers, younger teens who are more sensitive (incluing being sensitive to swearing in books) may not enjoy these as much as older teens who are more comfortable reading such things (to use ‘The Hate U Give’ as an example again, it’s full of the f and s swear words throughout and is quite a difficult read given what happens and the details the book goes into). For anyone though who enjoys Angie Thomas’s books though, or who wants to get the chance to read them then this is a good box set to get.

Unfortunately, despite saying that this is a great box set (and I always like a box set!) I am a bit disappointed with the actual ‘box’ you get. With other boxed sets of books you often get a nice and very sturdy box to hold these books in. But this one though is just made of simple card and is simply held into a box shape by a flap at the back which you can open, meaning you can then collapse the whole thing flat when there are no books inside. The disappointing thing about this is that when trying to put both books back into the ‘box’ at the same time, the flap ended up bending some of the pages of one book, and putting one book in followed by the other is a bit awkward when fitting the second book back (again due to how bendy the box is!). So be aware that what you’re acutally getting is a bit of a flimsy box compared to some other box sets that are out there. However if you don’t own any of the books yet, or just want to own the pair, this is still a good buy as you get that outer sleeve-type box with the added images on the outside (even if it is just made of card).
-Thanks to Walker Books for a free copy for review. -
worth it also the pack is cheaper than buying individually

The Hate You Give- Raw, Real, and Relevant.
The best thing about this book is that the characters are not perfect by any means and most realize their mistakes.
The book does have minor flaws pertaining to certain character conversations that I felt could have been explained a bit better.
However, this book still deserves between 4.5-5 stars as it is a story that not only needs to be told, but also needs to be understood.
On The Come Up-Emotional, intense, and spectacular in every way imaginable. -
Bravo
Angie Thomas does it again! With captivating prose and freestyle, she penned a heart-warming/heart-breaking (read full spectrum of emotions will be experienced) YA read, that readers of all ages can enjoy. -
