And you, who were dead in your trespasses and the uncircumcision of your flesh, God made alive together with him, having forgiven us all our trespasses, by canceling the record of debt that stood against us with its legal demands. This he set aside, nailing it to the cross. – Colossians 2:13-14

Raised Together: A Study of Colossians, Bible Study Book Reviews

Furman’s insights on scripture and perspective on womanhood and motherhood are so Biblically based and inspiring. This study in Colossians is full of encouragement and real Bible study that challenged me in many ways. While the book is thin (140 pages), it took me several months to finish the daily work and weekly audio. Some “weeks” of work took me 2-3 weeks to finish just because I didn’t want to rush through the meaty Bible study. I loved how it went deeply into each verse of the book, and offered many cross-references to other epistles, the book of Acts and the Old Testament.

While I enjoyed the Bible study and found it to be deep in scripture, Furman’s tone in the questions and the audio felt as if she was “talking down” to her listeners. It bordered on feeling fake. I was surprised about this given how beautifully written and encouraging I found Treasuring Christ in the Season of Motherhood. Still, I learned so much about the book of Colossians and the apostle Paul, I’m glad I took the time to go through this study.

I like the study but have been disappointed by the videos, although l do appreciate Lifeway providing them on line. The videos l have found to be elementary but the study guide is deeper. I have incorporated a sermon series on Colossians by a favorite and well known pastor, Matt Chandler. While this means it will take me longer to finish the study and book, l will gain a deeper understanding of this part of God’s Word, which should always be the goal when studying His Word. With the exception of the video's, this is a great study, the sermon video's complemented it greatly, giving two perspectives. I took away fresh insight and a deeper understanding of Colossians between the two resources I combined.

I read this as a Bible study with my women's study group at church over the last few months. And, honestly, it wasn't my favorite we've done. I was a little disappointed in and bored by it.

It's possible I just didn't connect to Mrs. Furman's teaching style, but I really struggled to understand what her point was through most of the lessons. The videos were okay, but I felt lost through most of them and like I wasn't seeing a point. Even more confusing than that, though, were the lessons in the book itself.

While I greatly appreciated having enough space to actually answer the questions she asked (unlike many study books), many of her questions were simply rewriting a verse or short yes or no answers--and not the kind you had to really think hard and debate about. Furhtermore, she never really explaind her point to asking the questions she did or pointing us in different directions. It never really felt like what I was "learning" tied together and made cohesive sense. She'd ask a question--either one that was simple to answer or one that I had zero idea how to find the answer she was looking for--and then ask another seemingly unrelated question only to end up in a paragraph that just said how awesome our God is! And while, yeah, our God is the most amazing, I didn't see what she was trying to point out or teach me or make me think about. I didn't feel stretched or like I grew very much. And I don't particularly feel like I better undesrtand Colossians either.

Again, it could just be me, but I wasn't super impressed with this one and I don't really feel like I came away stronger for it. Mrs. Furman was obviously very enthusiastic, and she did speak truth. It just felt very basic, very fundamental, and very repetitive to me. Perhaps someone else would relate better to her style and would better understand the book than I did.

I enjoyed studying Colossians but this wasn’t the best study companion for me. I stopped watching the videos halfway through because they did not add to the study. I didn’t get a lot of insight from this book or the few cross reference verses she included.
