Tall Tales on the Iron Horse Reviews
-
“… Two kilometers inland from the equatorial Sumatran port of Padang the train turns sharply, plunges into the mountain, and clatters down through a darkness relieved only by the occasional glimmer of St. Elmo’s fire, finally emerging, after three days by the clock, into the icy orange daylight of Saturn’s moon, Titan…”
TALL TALES ON THE IRON HORSE is a collection of Science Fiction stories that has you wondering if what you have just read is true, are you on earth or in on another planet and what time of history are you in!!
The author, Colin P Davies is from England and has been writing Science Fiction for over two decades, winning a lot of awards as he went. This book brings those stories into one volume. The artwork on the front cover is stunning – I can look at it for ages – so earthlike yet so alien and spacelike. Wonderful contrast.
His stories are a real mixture, some were so perplexing I just didn’t get it – but still enjoyed what I read – if that makes sense!! They are not comforting stories they are edgy, despairing, bleak and yet humorous. My favourites were Tall Tales on the Iron Horse; A Touch of Earth; Prehaps a Goddess and the Hay Devils. That’s not that I disliked the others – although one or two were too dark in spirit for me which brought the score down to the top end of C – these ones were just the best for me. I would like to add that my husband also read the book and gives the book a score of B – he is a long time pure sci-fi fan where as I am just started out in the genre recently after reading more fantasy sci-fi blends.
If you are a Science Fiction fan – do yourself a favour and get your hands on this book -
This review is based on the titular story of the volume which is available here
