Poetry Magazine May 2018 Reviews

The best volume of the year, by a long shot the volume is worth picking up for the Matthew Dickman (loving and violent), Hanif Abdurraqiq (a melancholy master), DA Powell (tricky) and Bernadette Meyer (languid) poems. This volume was clearly edited and compiled to put poems in conversation with one another.

Always, when I read Poetry, I wonder why certain poems were chosen. A mixed bag, this issue has some gems by D. A. Powell, a couple by Matthew Dickman that I liked a lot, and an absolutely Excellent(!) erasure poem by Kristin Renee Miller. This means I found more to like and enjoy than usual.

I really loved the Jack Underwood essay and have been thinking of the role of clarity, abstraction, mystery, and questions in poetry a lot lately, especially in regards to how poetry is taught and absorbed. The poems are good, too. The issue didn’t blow me away in that respect, but there are certainly some that I connected with and enjoyed. When there are fewer text poems and more room is made visual poems and essay that’s always likely to be the case.

Really great wordplay pieces in this month's publication.
