Nelly lives in New York, the greatest city in the world.
Every morning, she wakes up to the rumble of the subways and the honking of cars.
Every morning, she can smell the food cart downstairs and hear the rat-a-tat-tat of the street musicians outside.
Every morning, she goes outside to be in the city she knows like the back of her hand—or does she?
One morning, Nelly and her dog Bagel decide to find out what New York is really about—or more specifically, why a city that has nothing to do with apples is the Biggest Apple of them all. Could there really be a giant apple somewhere in New York? And where is it hiding?

Dear New York Publishing:
Hi. I feel like I need to tell you something. It may not be easy to hear. It's something I've tried to say before, but you never seemed willing to hear. I'm going to try again, anyway. Deep breath. Okay. Here goes. New York City is not actually the center of the universe. I mean, it's cool and all, but it's not the aspirational fantasy dream destination of small children everywhere, no matter how many picture books you may publish to the contrary. It is also not home to every child in the world. There are other cities, like Chicago and Paris and London and Cairo and Toronto, that are just as interesting (some even more so), but y'all don't do half as many picture books about all of them combined. As someone who sells books in a semi-rural area on the other side of the country, I can honestly say that we have absolutely no need of another picture book about New York City. It's not what our customers are interested in. This one's cute and I'm not actually rating it here because it's not the book's fault that y'all are kind of myopic.
Sincerely,
A West Coast small city bookseller -
There are a lot of literally pieces to the story I'm not sure about/like. The illustrations arw fabulous and most people will love it

Nelly goes off in search of the "Big Apple" and, in the process, visits all the amazing places around New York City.
This is a fun introduction to the best and greatest from one of the world's best and greatest cities.
The illustrations are drawn from a child's point of view, and everything looks huge and monumental.
This is an ideal book to share with a child about to visit New York for the first time or for a child who has been to NYC a million times.
It's absolutely charming. -
My third grade granddaughter loved this book! (I usually have to encourage her s strongly to read) The detailed illustrations, the storyline! She learned all about the "big Apple". Her only question was why this little girl was wandering around the city all by herself. A great book by a great author.

Hello, friends! Our book today is Nelly Takes New York: A Little Girl’s Adventures In The Big Apple, written by Allison Patacki and Marya Myers, and illustrated by Kristi Valiant.
Nelly wakes up in her West Village apartment bedroom to the familiar sounds of New York: the rumble of the subway, the beat of a street musician, the rattle of a shop gate being opened. Heading outside with her faithful beagle (named Bagel), she runs into Mr. Patel in his food truck. After telling him her morning plans, he replies enthusiastically: “The Big Apple is tons of fun!” Big Apple? Sounds exciting, and just the kind of thing she and Bagel would love to see. So Nelly and her pup set out on a Manhattan adventure that takes them from Union Square to the Museum of Natural History to the 9/11 Memorial; searching for the Big Apple, and finding it in the most unexpected of ways.
Native New Yorkers may chuckle at a few of the book’s premises and conventions – what school-age native New Yorker, old enough to traverse Manhattan unaccompanied, has never heard the phrase “Big Apple”? – but with a little suspension of disbelief, there still a lot to love here. While a few of the standard tourist landmarks – like Central Park and the Empire State Building – are highlighted, the story reads primarily as a love letter from a New Yorker’s perspective. Beats focus on the strong sense of community New Yorkers have and the unique beauty of the city; rich, gloriously detailed illustrations capture the famed architecture and unparalleled diversity of races, skintones, religions, and cultures. It’s a view of New York for both residents and non-residents, and overall does a lovely job of celebrating “the Big Apple”. The length was fine for a storytime, and JJ loved the illustrations especially the rascally Bagel. We really enjoyed it, so it’s Baby Bookworm approved!

A sweet girl and her adorable dog try to figure out where the Big Apple is in this fun homage to New York.
Nelly lives in an apartment in New York with her faithful friend, Bagel. One morning, she wonders where the Big Apple is located. Taking to the streets, she asks various people where the apple is and each time ends up at an interesting location...but not the big apple. With Bagel keeping her on her toes, she begins to wonder if she'll ever find what she's looking for.
Fans of New York (or those curious about the city) are sure to love this tale. Nelly is a spunky, sweet girl who is curious and determined. Her dog, Bagel, is the perfect companion and adds not only that extra dab of cuteness but humor as well. It's fun to follow the two as they visit various and several well-known sites in the big city.
The illustrations are as busy as the city and bring the excitement and variety to life. There are many details and surprises in each one, guaranteeing that young readers will flip through on their own to discover more. At the same time, the message behind the search becomes clear as Nelly discovers what makes New York the city it is.
The Big Apple isn't what Nelly first suspects it might be, but rather brings across the heart of the city. The pacing is just right for young readers to follow this and understand what is going on. There is enough excitement to keep the tale interesting, while the more serious message seeps in. This makes it a wonderful read-aloud and one to be read more than once.
I received a complimentary copy and enjoyed this with my kids quite a bit. So, I'm leaving my honet thoughts. -
There's a little girl, Nelly, who has a mischievous little beagle named Bagel. One morning, she hears that her New York City home is also called The Big Apple. She and Bagel set off to find a big apple. They end up having fun throughout the adventure, meeting people and experiencing "The Big Apple" as a community with New Yorkers, beautiful landmarks and museums, and tons of parks. They fall in love with the city.
The book includes all the different places, and I thought the choices of what to include were very interesting. For example, the authors mentioned the 9/11 Memorial, but not The Met. I especially loved the illustrations because you can see what Bagel is up to on every page. The pictures captured the sense of the character and the city perfectly.
