It started out well, but the longer it went on, the more frustrated I became with some of the undertones. Brown’s writing is solidly put together and flows well. The heroine, Kimani, is sassy and strong, but also knows when to acquiesce. The hero, Ben, is fairly respectable of Kimani’s wishes, but he does push at times when he should’ve/could’ve protected her. And that’s when I started to question the story’s intent.
“Being made to do something you’ve never done before, maybe something you think is wrong and embarrassing, and because it’s wrong and embarrassing, it’s f*#king erotic?”
That’s Ben speaking to Kimani. The quote itself is pretty harmless, but the situation it’s stated during is not. Jake, the man hosting the party, has just told his slave Claire to go down on one of the other female slaves. Claire states she’s not gay and is clearly uncomfortable with the idea of doing so. But that doesn’t matter, because Claire isn’t allowed a safeword. She either does what Jake says, or suffers the consequences which usually involve some form of physical or sexual abuse. All the while Ben is making Kimani watch the spectacle and trying to convince her that it’s actually a blessing to Claire, having the choice taken from her. The sub should always have the choice when it comes to experimenting with new activities. Encouragement from the Dom to get his sub to try new positions/instruments/etc is one thing, but forcing a sub to go down on another woman without the option of safe-wording is another.
*Jake suggests to Ben that Kimani now go down on the fourth female slave. Ben contemplates it for a minute, but then decides against it. This is his reasoning:If he was going to make Kimani perform oral sex, it was not going to be because Jake wanted it.
Did you catch that? If Ben was going to MAKE Kimani perform oral sex. In proper BDSM relationships, the sub has the power. Ben shouldn’t have to MAKE Kimani perform sexually, he should make her comfortable enough to make that decision herself. In this book, all of the women have been stripped of their choices and their power under the pretense that it’s truly liberating.
I’m a fan of Brown’s. I even liked her Punishing Miss Primrose where the hero does some pretty terrible things to the heroine. But in that story, it was clear that what he was doing was wrong. In His for a Week: Bought, I felt like the author was perpetuating the idea that what the women were experiencing was technically ok, since it’s what all women secretly want, even outspoken feminists like Kimani. That ideology may evolve with the next book, though, and hopefully it does.
The story is sprinkled with political tones and controversial discussions that I feel pushed the story forward, but some readers may be offended or put off.

Its ok written I guess, but way too short.. I expected more background, more internal conflicts... more :) only 2 stars for this.
I think I will start the second book out of curiosity as the first book just cut off.... -
If you enjoy BillionaireBDSM then this story is for you. Interesting story line, with believable characters and gives us a interesting view of young wealth and its distortion. Em Brown develops interesting secondary characters. Along with the good and bad of BDSM behavior which I enjoyed. It is a cliff hangar which I don't mind, but this one was startling. Good read and one BDSM fans will enjoy.

Not what I expected but interesting -
I am not even sure what to think of this book at the moment. It really really pissed me off for the most part with the supporting cast. Basically, the women sign up for the Scarlet Auction which is pretty much exactly what it sounds like. Rich men bid on women and get to keep them as Sex Slaves for the week. Only thing is Kimani has no intentions on having sex she just joined in so that she can get a story for the paper.
This Jake person needs to have his penis stomped on or something. Who the hell speaks to women that way even if she is supposed to be your sub? The rest of the girls in the crew are dumb as hell if they think that this kind of crap is normal.
On the other hand I don't feel bad for Kimani at all, she signed up for the backwards ass adventure just to get a story. I would have been out of there the second that he laid a hand on me that was for some type of sexual thrill.
I am interested, very interested in fact to see what happens between Kimani and Ben though. I kind of want him to turn her out a bit. She seems like she can be a bit stuck up. Also if someone could just punch Jake in the mouth that would be great! -
I cant seem to get enough of Em Brown's stories!! While I was getting used to her historical based BDSM reads she goes and takes me into another directions with a story that is a little more dark then what I was expecting from Em. But what a wonderful surprise! I cant wait to read more about these two characters and see where this might go.

I’m reviewing Books 1-4 on this one review. The whole series was a 4. The author had a good storyline. Did it needed to be dragged out to four books? No! Buts that’s how they make money.
Kimani whose the main character in the story, I wanted more backbone from her. She gave into easy to Ben. I really wanted to slap her ass and be like bish if you don’t stop being stupid.
All and all the series had some great sex scenes and a different view of BDSM which was cool.
Happy Reading!! -

I was pretty much expecting this to be bad, but it was well written, and there was a lot of diversity and discussion of feminism, which I appreciated. Our main character, Kimani, is a Black Woman who is also a feminist and she is a journalist while the love interest was a Chinese billionaire who was also into BDSM.
However, having said that, I think it would be disingenuous to say that there were not some very problematic aspects to this story. There is a lot of abuse in this story, which can be super triggering for those that have experienced anything like that. I think there should also be a trigger warning for sexual assault, racism, sexism, and homoeroticism. There were a lot of problematic aspects to this story, and they weren't always combatted with a character saying that shit was wrong. These women are not really in a position to defend themselves, and while Ben does defend them and try to help them a few times, I think it was really disgusting some other times whenever he even encouraged this barbaric behavior.
Overall, for me, the good did not outweigh the bad, and I cannot and will not recommend this book to people because of all of these problematic elements coinciding in this story. -
I don’t like writing bad reviews but unfortunately this book wasn’t really for me. Both characters are bland and even if I read the entire book, I still couldn’t figure out what I was really reading. She claims to be a journalist but she is so clumsy and unprepared to face the adversity. The male character, on the other hand, is flimsy and not a true dominant. I apologize if I usually keep saying the same things but mine is just a subjective opinion and nothing more.

Hmm
That's a lot for a simple story. But it's crazy how society looks at sex as taboo instead of what it is.. animal nature. Your body has needs if you happen to get paid for fulfilling a need it's a bonus. -
I couldn’t finish this... it was just so bad...

This was a DNF for me. Not enough plot to keep me interested. I grew bored really quickly.

What a wonderful beginning to another series by Em Brown. I am most familiar with Em Brown's erotic regency books, but this contemporary one is fabulous.
Although we just have the first couple of days of the 'week', it's already given me a lot of action, angst, and a smart sassy heroine and a most worthy hero. I think that I will remember that not all good looking, wealthy guys are worth the trouble; and that, sometimes the quiet ones can be both attractive and have depth to their character.
A lesson here might be look before you leap, or I could wind up in a really bad situation. There might not be a Ben to rescue me. Another lesson might be that no work assignment is worth being abused and debased.
If you like the premise of wealthy billionaires bidding on young girls, some very innocent ones, who get a week to make a lasting connection. Erotic sex. A heroine and hero taking it slower and getting to know each other. He's experienced and she is pretending to be someone she is not. This is a great beginning to one of Em Brown's best works. Some behind the scenes sleuthing by both of them, make for fun reading.
I received this book as an ARC, but the choice to read and review the book was left to me to decide. It was a pleasure to read and review this beginning for you. Five Stars from me! -
2.00 Stars. (BW/AM). Kindle Edition e-book. I got this book thinking it about an investigative journalist researching human trafficking and finding love in the process; however, what I read was an unromantic story about an inquisitive would be BDSM submissive with journalistic credentials. In the name or journalistic research, the heroine, Kimani Taylor, allows her naive unprepared self to be sold as a sex slave. After a few days of demeaning treatment by her original purchaser, Kimani is resold to Ben Lee, the Chinese billionaire son of a lucrative cooperation. Ben is a dominate and ghas Kimani engaging in ways she formally considered to be depraved. In addition to failing to portray Kimani's and Ben's interactions as those of a couple in a loving relationship, this installment of the story abruptly ends and has left me with no desire reading further.

This was a short novella that I feel doesn't really given me a romance vibe. In fact, many of the scenes in the book make me pretty grossed out and uncomfortable far more than they make me interested in reading more of the story. I think if the book concentrates more on Ben and Kimani, I'd be more pleased. The other guys and girls in the book are pretty gross as are the scenes in it. I am still tripping on the whole bidding on women situation and it not being considered escorting, but whatever. You're left with a cliffhanger and the first two chapers of Book 2 "Ravaged" which, I'll read because up until this point, Kimani and Ben haven't done the actual deed yet and I want to read how that plays out, but not in a rush.

The good storyline and the great characters made this book a very enjoyable read! This book was such a good read that I ended up reading it in one sitting!

3/5 - First off this 150-something novella ends with a cliffhanger. There was no warning there would be a cliffhanger.
I tend to like cliffhangers but you got to give me something to come back to — this story read like the author wanted to date me and string me along for months before a kiss.
This sex auction has the women sign NDA’s and contracts but they sign blanket consents. No hard or soft limits are negotiated before hand. They aren’t given safe-words and they are made to feel that if they don’t sign or don’t consent to hardcore BDSM they won’t make a lot of money. I will say this story feels like rough and violent sex is BDSM for all characters but one, Ben (our hero) who’s been in the scene for 10 years and actually knows how to build trust.
This is supposed to be a BDSM romance. There’s zero BDSM activities. There’s zero penetrative sex between the hero and heroine. There’s some talk about power exchange and roles but that’s it for BDSM. There’s an asshole character, Jake, that thinks he’s a Dom/Master? I’m confused really. He wants all the women bought at a consenting sex auction to call the men Master’s but of the 4 men there, Ben is a true Dom.
Kimani is a lying and judgmental character. She’s a freelance reporter going undercover at the Scarlett Auction bc her friend did it and come home with bruises. She a proud feminist that likes to judge all who are involved with the sex auction including the women bought with her. She constantly questions them about being objectified and how terrible that is but she’s lying to everyone. She comes off bitchy and arrogant. Contradictory as well. I don’t like her and I don’t feel chemistry between she and Ben.
The character Jake thinks BDSM is slapping and punching women in the face when they don’t do what he wants. Having sex with virgins bc he thinks their virgin blood is lubricant — ick! I hate his character and I give props to the author for writing as a perfect asshole.
Nothing about this story got me off in the interest of why we read erotica and erotic romance books. Let’s. Be. Real.
Trigger warnings: “N” word is used in a derogatory way. Sex for money (consenting). Hitting and slapping (not during play), masturbation, peripheral sex acts of beta characters but nothing descriptive. F/F oral sex. Women sleep in a locked basement in the floor. Women have to cook for the men. It’s slave play but it’s forced.
I feel I need to repeat AGAIN, there are no BDSM play scenes. There’s no sex scenes. Just a bunch of finger banging that’s not all that hot
**EDIT: I’m not going to read the rest of the series. Books 2-3 they are still at the cabin, they are both $3.99 and there is a book 4 that spoils you in the blurb so WTF bother to read all the nonsense in the other books. DISAPPOINTING to say the least. -
OMG New level of bad!!
I'm not sure but this story line I've read before not too long ago actually where a undercover wanna be reporter sneaks into some BDSM club to get the scoop on the rich and famous getting down and dirty but this book it's not a club it's an auction women willingly sign up to give them selves to a man for one week he will be her Master she is his slave it sounded like it would be a decent read but the further I got into it the worse it got. Kimani came off as very ignorant and very stupid I mean what level headed woman signs up to be in an auction where she knows she's going to be a man's sex slave and doesn't do her homework?!?! She literally knew nothing about this whole thing and granted they were told very little in the interviews and all that she didn't even research the BDSM lifestyle her answer was she dabbled a little with past partners with a little rope play, spanking, that was about it I mean really it goes so much deeper! She had no clue what she was getting into and then we had to read her go on and on about how it's wrong women shouldn't be treated like objects yada yada ya.... I had to agree with the one girl when she told her she was a downer ruining all the fun.. I mean she got lucky when Ben bought her from Jake that dude was a total prick I would have shanked him if I could have. Yet she is sitting there getting all high and mighty with the guy that pretty much saved her behind from a lot of torture because I'm pretty sure Jake would have eventually snapped on her. Anyways the book was very short the author decided to break it down in to different books it ends with Kimani finding out who Ben really is and the inside guy for the paper she's wanting to work for is interested in doing the piece on him not the auction and that is where it ends. It really sucked in my opinion because of all the angst coming from Kimani but I seriously doubt I would read anymore. -
Kimani graduated with a degree in Communications and wants a job as a reporter for a newspaper. When her roommate came home from being sold for a week with bruises, Kimani decided writing an expose would be her key to getting the job. With her editor's approval she's goes undercover to the auction and is bought along with Claire by Jake for a week. They are whisked away without luggage, phones or anything else to a secluded cabin. Mistreated by Jake, Kamani is torn between staying for the story and trying to find a way to leave.
Ben arrives and is angered by Jake's treatment of Kamani and buys her from Jake. She is still stuck in a secluded cabin for a week with Jake, Ben and two other friends along with Claire, two other women who arrive with the friends and a bodyguard but decides to maintain her cover for the story. Ben assumes she is there willingly and into BDSM and she doesn't tell her the truth.
Ben treats here well but as his pet since that's what he wants and what he thinks she wants. This story introduces their relationship as we watch Ben unknowingly introduce Kamani to BDSM although in this first book there isn't much of that. The sex is fairly vanilla to start out.
This is a cliffhanger and Kimani is badly treated by Jake. He's not much nicer to Claire. If you're looking for straightforward consensual BDSM or romance you won't find it here. It is setting up for that between Kimani and Ben, maybe, but that's not in this first story.
I enjoyed getting to know Kimani and Ben and I'm interested in seeing where this goes. Some of it's a little predictable but I want to see where this goes. I'll definitely read the next one.
I received an ARC for a honest review. -
Ben and Jason were cousin's and if weren't for the fact that Jake was Jason's friend and former college roommate, and Ben's father wanted Jake's business connections, Ben would have called it a night. He just really didn't like the guy with his smug expressions and continually spouting off how much everything cost. Hell, Ben could afford everything Jake kept going on about and more but he never felt the need to brag about it. Now they're talking about going to the Scarlet auction that only happens once a month at midnight. Ben was given a choice, bring a woman from the auction or come stag. Period.
Kimani Taylor had finally made it though all the preliminaries, almost having backed out several times. Signing all the legal documents in front of four different attorneys, being asked when she lost her virginity, how many sexual partners she's had, the physical exam and then the interview with the woman asking about her sexual preferences. When she agreed to be engaged in hardcore BDSM she wasn't worried. Her plan was to get bid on, get to know the "buyer" and the other participants of the Scarlet Auction, pull out before any sex actually happened, then write the scoop that would land her a job with the San Francisco Tribune. Given she was only a year out of journalism school, she needed an edge worthy of being noticed.
What a bizarre set of circumstances. Is your interest piqued about the auction, the week at the cabin, even the research for the story. The buildup in this book will keep your interest piqued. Go in knowing there is a cliff hanger. -
Jake, Jason, and Derek are off to an auction at The Scarlet Auction. They were going away to Jake's cabin for a week and they all were going to bid on someone to take. Kimani goes to the Scarlet Auction she is a journalist and she was hoping to get bid on get to know the person and then get the story. Kimani and another girl were taken and whisked away and then put in a dark basement without food and facilities by Jake. He was cruel and was good at throwing racial slj urs at Kimani. Ben arrives at the cabin to find both girls on their knees one was naked the other dressed. Ben took a look at Kimani and saw the bruise to the face that Jake had done while she was captivity in the basement. Since Ben didn't go to the auction he told Jake he would pay two hundred thousand dollars to buy her. What he liked about her that she had fire in her eyes and wasn't afraid to say what was on her mind. She borrowed Ben's phone and proceeded to send a text to her boss and accidentally left the text on his phone. He knew something was going on and he wants to find all of her secrets and submission. Ben went a long a little with Jake because he was trying to get a new. Jake takes them all out on the boat with him But, none of the girls could wear clothing. Kimani asked Ben for his cellphone again so she went into the bathroom to talk Ben over hears part of the conversation wondering why she mentioned his uncle.
This book is a cliffhanger which I don't like. That is why I gave it 3 stars. Trigger Points: physical abuse racial slurs
