This is our very first zine (!). To make it, we reached out to friends, qts we’ve been knowing about, and total internet strangers we admire to find visual and written work by queer and trans people who experience some kind of affinity with femmeness. We thought about “affinity” broadly: feeling femme through-and-through; approaching femmeness tentatively; orbiting its outer limits. We know that even marginal identities are often easier to access for those in power, so we were especially interested in talking with people who may not always be considered or centered in conversations about femininity/femmeness (and/or who don’t always or ever publicly claim femmeness).
*
Throughout this process, we’ve been thinking about how femmeness is often constructed to make us feel like we have to constantly achieve it, and we’ve been interested in moments of feminine failure, confrontational femininity, what we fantasize about doing the next time someone fucks with our femininity. We also looked for work that deals with femmeness indirectly, at a slant. We want to dismantle femme hierarchies and bask in some low-femme splendor.
*
We’re not totally sure how this generative magic works, but it seems like the words we choose to describe ourselves tell less about what we experience and more about what we want for ourselves, what we align ourselves with. Maybe by coming together in spaces like these, around our femme/feminine/effeminate responses to the world, we are imagining rather than proving ourselves.
*
So much work we love has come together here; we think it talks among itselves; we hope it talks with you too.
