I bought and read this book 100% for me after hearing so many friends talking about it. And, well, the title might’ve caught my attention too . . .
Sonya and Callie are stepping out for a nice meal after a long week of work when they’re accosted by a handful of men acting strangely and saying lewd things. At first they don’t think anything of it because some men can be dickish when you’re a lady all dressed up (or just a lady, really). But their inane sexual insults become increasingly more aggressive and they take cover in the restaurant only to discover that apparently all men have turned into horrifying, raping sex lunatics. Or all men that have been listening to a broadcast put out by the president. A broadcast filled with hate, vitriol and nonsensical insults about womenkind.
Shit, I feel like this could happen!
Anyhow, things go from awful to terrifyingly horrific in a blink and things don’t let up from there. In order to stop the sex apocalypse a group of women survivors must do what is necessary to cut off the source of the broadcast and when they finally do IT IS GLORIOUS and cathartic but I will not spoil the fun for you.
If you are disgusted with a certain someone in charge and can stomach in your face graphic horror, I think you need to read this book. The ending will make you feel better. All the things my friends have been saying about this book are true. It’s angry and ridiculous and dark and disturbing and it cuts too close to the bone because some days, when I read too much Twitter or watch too much of the news, I feel like this sex plague inflicted on womankind might just happen. It’s gruesome and highly recommended if you don’t mind your horror super gross! -
C.V. Hunt never lets me down. What a great book! Its premises are so relevant that I would not be surprised if fiction turned into fact. The president sends a message out to the men of the world, which is broadcasted on a perpetual loop. Suddenly, all adult males become pickup-line spouting automatons, ready to have sex with any and all females (dead or alive). They will even mate with odd body parts, severed or attached. Weeee doggies! The women have a hell of a time trying to survive. But they're women. They plan, they prepare and they take action. Battling misogynistic stalkers, religion gone wrong, political pressure and prejudice, the ladies are determined to build a better world. I loved every minute of this book. It is a warning commentary on our times, but it never loses its sense of humor. I laughed a lot. You should read it.

All Sonya and Callie want is to have a nice date night dinner, a few drinks and maybe a little sweet, sweet lovemaking back at the house to top off the evening.
Sounds like a plan.
That is until a presidential radio broadcast is infecting all the men like a virus and turning them into violent, inappropriate cat calling, rapey pigs bent on violating any and every woman they see.
Damnit.
This is going to put a huge damper on the evening.
Yummy hot nun raspberry pie, running with man wood, dripping Presidential neck jizz, cricket bat ball smash and a world re-population basement bdsm party.
I listened to this one on audio. I can imagine it was a ton of fun to narrate. It is violent, rapey, funny, brutal and has plenty of political currents running through its veins. Maybe, fun isn’t the word.
This was very well done and extremely violent, which I dug about it. If you have delicate sensibilities, I would probably stay away from this one. If your sick like me then you will give it 4.5 Stars rounded up to 5 because it took some serious balls to write this one. Maybe, balls isn't the word.

Heading out for a posh date night, Sonya and her girlfriend Callie find themselves harassed by groups of men as they walk from their apartment to a nearby Italian restaurant. The men quickly escalate from shitty pick-up lines and cat-calling to more sexually aggressive attacks. Sonya and Callie find that escaping into the restaurant has only brought them deeper into a realm of eye-opening depravity. Everywhere, men are transforming into violent sex-crazed zombies, all thanks to a message originating from a radio broadcast being delivered by the President of the United States. If the women of America have any hope of surviving, they have to terminate the message directly at its source. But will they be able to make it to DC and survive the sea of fully-erect men standing in their way?
Cockblockby C.V. Hunt is a work of extreme horror, and an original, wildly interesting, and often-times painful, riff on the zombie apocalypse. Yes, it's violent and angry and sexually-charged and filled with depictions of rape, but never callously or needlessly so. This is a work of extreme horror borne straight from the depths of the Trump administration, and it's necessarily grizzly.
What do you do when the supreme figurehead of your country is a repulsive, pussy-grabbing, racist, morally bankrupt, bigoted egomaniac whose daily existence is a dog-whistle for the absolute worst in American society? What happens when your friends and neighbors, even members of your own family, are suddenly rallied, energized, and transformed into savage, mindless, lunatic zombies by that man's messages of hate? You resist. You fight back. You try to fix your country anyway you can.
Cockblock is a smart and swift slice of Resistance fiction, one that is by its very nature ugly and sickening but with a core filled with enough rabble-rousing girl-power to give readers hope. I have little doubt that men will ultimately destroy this world, and that women will be the ones responsible and smart enough to fix our ineptitude and misdeeds. Sonya and Callie are forced to contend with a world that has changed overnight, in the blink of an eye, and has rolled over to expose its vile, cancerous, dark underbelly. Giving up isn't in their nature, though, and despite all the overwhelming sexual violence levied against them they never surrender - they keep fighting, and I kept rooting for them, living vicariously through them as they kicked every pair of diseased, low-hanging balls that got in their way.
Hunt filters Cockblock through a grindhouse aesthetic (appropriate, as the publisher of Cockblock is Grindhouse Press), drawing upon not only traditional zombie fare but various exploitative film genres as rape and revenge, women in prison, and sexploitation flicks. It's a bit of Caligula, a bit of I Spit On Your Grave, a bit of Roger Corman, and way too fucking much of Trump's America. Hunt's protagonists take their fight straight to the streets and all the way to the top with an angry, energetic fervor that makes Cockblock one of the most surprisingly patriotic splatterpunk reads I've come across, with one of the most satisfying finales I've read in some time. This book is a drop-kick straight to Trump's nutsack, and I fucking loved it. This book gets all the stars, and a few extra stripes of red, white, and blue to go with them.
[Note: I received an advanced copy of this title from the publisher.] -
Callie and Sonya are on their way for a nice date night, when all of a sudden they are verbally assaulted by some men on the street. As the men got closer, the assault became physical and soon they are running for their lives. They discover that a message from the president is being broadcast nationwide and it's affecting men all over the country. How does it affect them? Will Callie and Sonya make it out alive? You'll have to read this short book to find out!
All of my horror loving friends that have read this have rated it fairly high. I love and trust them so when I saw this available in the Audiobook Boom! listing, I requested it right away. And now, here we are.
Incredibly graphic and violent, while at the same time kind of hilarious, C.V. Hunt has worked some magic here. A somewhat derisive view of the president and politics in general is worked into the story as well. It's not in your face, but it's there and that's just fine with me. In a world where we shame rape victims for speaking out, where we often treat the perpetrators as young men who just made a mistake,
I listened to this on audio and I admit it took me a while to get used to the narrator. It must have been difficult for her at times, because as I said above there are some incredibly brutal scenes here. I gained respect as the story unwound and ended up enjoying her quite a bit.
Brutal, tongue in cheek, (and in many other places in this story), violent, graphic, and with an eye toward our current political environment, COCKBLOCK, is original, imaginative, sarcastic, and has a clear vision of what it wants to say. The only question that remains is are you brave enough to hear it?
Highly recommended to those horror fans who can handle brutal violence and rape.
*Thanks to the narrator and to Audiobook Boom! for the audio of this novella in exchange for my honest feedback. This is it!* -
"Her eyes were wide and glassy and filled with fear and anger and nervousness and something that said she wasn't going to take any more shit from anyone, ever. She'd been replaced with something wild."
Cockblock is my second CV Hunt book, and I really loved this one. This small book has so much packed into it & takes you through every emotion - it's funny, heartbreaking, disturbing, gross, and even a little romantic and heartwarming. If you're considering reading this one, just know that this is extreme horror & there are parts with rape.
I think that this book is going to haunt me for a bit. Even though it's a very dark story, it has a good message & it still has hope. Parts of it were stressful to read, but I think it was all woven together well. I will definitely pick up another book from CV Hunt. -
Such deviant fun!
"A high-powered stench of vagina and feces and unwashed bodies wafted up to assault my sense of smell as we stepped into the room."
You almost want to plug your nose as you read this story!
Sonya and Callie just want to go out for a romantic date night but the men in their vicinity have other plans. The President of the United States (shocking!) is broadcasting sexist, incendiary speech that turns men into mindless sex zombies (more so than usual, that is 😊). Spewing cheesy pick-up lines like, “Can I read your T-shirt in braille?!” and “I may not go down in history but I’ll go down on you," men from all walks of life have been brainwashed to defile women. Can Sonya and Callie survive the madness?
This was my first book by C.V. Hunt and it certainly won't be my last. I was immediately immersed in the story through Hunt's skillful use of figurative language and humor. The story is told through the perspective of the main character, Sonya, and I connected with her quickly and easily. The pacing was flawless and the action, plentiful. The gore/depravity was descript but not over-the-top. It was a great, entertaining and satisfying read.
Oh, and a word of caution to Andy, for whom this book is dedicated...
Don't get C.V. Hunt angry! ;-) -
Cockblock is an entertaining and clever twist on the zombie trope. The writing is clean and efficient, energetic and fierce. There are some cautionary overtones here that are tied to the current situation in the US. They aren't forced upon the reader, but intelligently crafted into a rapidly moving narrative. This one packs a punch, but after reading maybe kick is a better word. There are some moments that will turn the squeamish running to the hills, but you will also be laughing. A pure joy to read.
-
Another solid tale of terror from C.V. Hunt. This time, a zombie story thinly veiled as a dystopian tale of testosterone driven terror. I'm sick of zombie stories but C.V. Hunt puts just enough spin on the genre that it remains interesting the whole ride.
I zipped through the book. It's an easy enough read. If you know zombie stories, you know all the beats. The twist on the old hat gives it just enough to be curious as to how the survivors deal with the modified zombies. Hint: Its still a shot to the head, just not THAT head.
I teetered on calling this 3 or 4 stars. It is, at its heart a zombie story like most others. I can't deny the twist and how it made an otherwise pedestrian zombie book something to keep me turning the pages to find out what came next. That's kinda big if you can get me to read zombies anymore so 4 star effort all in all. Not nearly as brutal or graphic as other C.V. Hunt books bit a great read through and through.
And if you ever need a bad pick-up line, you need look no further than COCKBLOCK. -
3.0 Stars
This was an intense, over the top novella with a rather ridiculous premise. Personally, I prefer more nuanced exploration of these kinds of sensitive topics. I did appreciate the queer representation with the lesibian relationship at the center of the story. This novella includes a lot of adult subject matter. Content warnings for rape and a lot of sexual harassment. I didn't like this one as much as I hoped. Be prepared for many cringey pick up lines. -
A short, but brutal read to be sure! Our main protagonist heads off to diner with her gal, but apparently, the sex zombies have arrived as well. Livid detail and strong imagery, and definitely not for the faint of heart.
-
Kick them in the dick! :)
-
Another brutal and well-written book from CV Hunt. A truly unique take on the zombie-like story. Narrator Ramona Master did an excellent job as well.
-
C.V. Hunt is quickly becoming one of my favorite authors, I hesitated to buy this one because although I do like super brutally violent and depraved books, rape is one of those depravitys that sometimes still bothers me. May sound weird but I can't finish it unless the rape is a brutal one, either violently or emotionally. No I'm not a sicko rape fantisizer, it's just that it is something that it's downplayed. The way it it's overlooked as "boys will be boys" or "well 2hat did she expect dressing like that?" Kind of attitude towards it is what makes me unable to read it. This book was very rapey but at its core what it is really about is exactly what I was just talking about. It has some political underlineings and a little comic relief with all the corny pick up lines but still sticks to the message that it is making. I loved the ending, I loved the entire thing though it did make me cringe and left me feeling depressed for the rest of the day. I said early that I hesitated to buy this one, I probably would have eventually but I ended up getting it from audio book boom free for review so thanks to the narrator who did a wonderfully job and is also the one who gave the copies away on audio book boom, also thanks to the author, audio book boom and whoever else may have made my free copy possible.

HONEY!!!! HONEY!!!! THIS BOOK RIGHT HERE!!! OH MISS THING!!!! LETS GET INTO MISS COCKBLOCK!!!!!
This book. Honey. Girl. This book right here. Ripped my heart out (literally.) Gave it back. Ripped it back out and pieced it together and gave it back and ripped it out again and ran off with it one page 149.
Cockblock is such a fun, fast paced, horror, bloody, gruesome, funny, romantic filled book. Cockblock packs such a bloody punch.
I went into this book blind. Not knowing a single thing about this book. I have never even heard of C.V. Hunt before. This was a total cover buy. Total complete cover buy. I mean come on girl!!! Look at that cover!!! The slaying of that cover!!!! COME THRU COVER!!!!!! I fully believe that you should totally go into this book blind. The only things you should know before going into Cockblock is that this book contains rape, and very gruesome scenes. So honey, if you can handle that and love girl power and sisterhood and some very intense sex scenes! Then miss thing Cockblock is for you!
Cockblock is definitely one of those books where you look at your phone and its three in the morning and you lay it back down and say "Oh one more chapter won't hurt." And then one chapter turns into the whole book and you only have five minutes till your alarm goes off........ Yeah.
Honey this book right will make you hate straight men. Girl thank god I'm gay!
I loved this. I truly, truly loved this!
I went back and forth on giving Cockblock a five or four star review. In the end I had to give this a four star review. To me there was just some very loose ends within Cockblock.
However, I loved this so much that before even typing this review I ordered another C.V. Hunt book!!! Her writing is so clear and so fun to read!
So, in the end this is a must read for all horror lovers!!! I truly can't wait to read more from C.V. Hunt!!! -
Men can be jerks, myself included, and we get what we deserve in this book!!!
-
It begins with being verbally assaulted on the street, but when Sonya and Callie reach their restaurant, safety isn’t to be found. A message overheard on the radio seems to influence men, turning them into mindless animals driven by one thing: to violate every woman in sight. Desperate for the nightmare to end, the couple make it their mission to stop the violence at its source.
(WARNING: This review contains minor spoilers.)
Believe me when I say right off that Cockblock was unique as I’ve NEVER read anything like it before. Imagine the zombie apocalypse as a ball of smooth playdough – we all know what to expect from it by now – but Hunt took that ball and unapologetically smushed it up into her own twisted creation. Sonya and Callie just want an evening meal, yet instead of being interrupted by flesh-eating undead, they’re accosted by sex-crazed men who mindlessly gush pickup lines. While it sounds fun, and was to an extent, it was also more than a little disturbing. Graphic depictions of rape were not out of the ordinary during the struggle for survival, women taking the brunt of severe misogyny and abuse. It touched on loss and death in general, going to some heavy places while not taking itself too seriously. How to kill the wood-sporting monsters? Well, blunt force trauma to the privates, of course. I didn’t know whether to laugh out loud or to put the book down and walk away as it oscillated back and forth between these two extremes.
It’s not going to be everyone’s cup of tea, not only because of the triggering content, but because of its political and feminist themes; it paints our male counterparts in a very negative light, the US Presidency as a joke, and religion also takes a hit as well in regards to homophobia. It’s not a stretch to consider it as one person’s expression of discontent, especially given the climate in which it was written, and I think that’s fair. If anything, writers have the right to use their work as an outlet, and Hunt was damn imaginative in getting across her feelings.
In conclusion: Violent in every way, Cockblock unleashed a new kind of apocalypse, one that transformed men everywhere into nothing but their base sexual urges. A group of women seek to destroy the source, that being a hateful broadcast from none other than the President of the USA. It was a constant pendulum of satire and unpleasantness, verging on being jarring. I knew what I was getting into after eyeballing some other reviews, but reading about it was nothing compared to actually experiencing it for myself. For such a small package, it was non-stop madness, its premise intense and ridiculous.

I’m going to preface this review by saying there are MAJOR TRIGGER WARNINGS for several forms of graphic sexual assault. Cockblock is chock full of explicit rape scenes (among other things), so please, please if you are a survivor or sensitive to sexual assault at all, I HIGHLY recommend trying something else. There are several scenes of very graphic assault (on multiple characters, including the main character) that almost made me put the book down, and I’m pretty desensitized to most things horror and violent. Trust me, it’s VERY intense, and please don’t push yourself to read it just out of curiosity. Be prepared.
If you are up for it though, Cockblock certainly is an interesting little novella. There are parts of it I liked, since I’m a big fan of apocalyptic, outbreak, zombie, and survival stories. The story starts out very quickly and doesn’t dawdle. Sonja and her girlfriend Callie are heading into the city for a nice dinner out after a week of work. To their surprise, suddenly all of the men are turned into sex-crazed horny zombies that basically want to sexually attack women while uttering horrible pickup lines. Once they figure out what’s going on, the plot takes off from there.
Our main character is pretty badass and I enjoyed following her for the most part. Cockblock is a fast paced nail biting story that is also a social commentary too. You can definitely tell that the President in charge who’s making the nasty speech which sparks the outbreak is Trump. This whole novella really is commenting on rape culture, Trumpism, and other things. The silly pickup lines the “zombies” speak are kind of funny but also gross and eerie too. The fact that C.V. Hunt doesn’t shy away from the aftermath of assault I think is intentional. I think she’s trying to show how rape and other assault truly is violent and causes a lot of pain and suffering on so many levels.
I just wish that some of the secondary characters were given a little more depth to them. It felt like the religious characters were exaggerated too much, and other characters seemed a bit one-dimensional. But, considering this is a novella and there’s not a lot of time for character development, I feel like that’s to be expected.
Overall, give this one a shot but only if you are truly mentally okay with the subject matter. It’s brutal, dark, twisted, gross, and uncomfortable to read. However, the ending is worth it. -
This one sees C.V. Hunt at her absolute whiniest and preachiest. It's all angst and no edge. The religious characters are so one-dimensional I highly doubt she knows anyone religious. What's more, the gay protagonists are equally one dimensional. I never understood why gay characters are written with their sexuality at the foundation of their being while also complaining about sexual objectification. C.V. Hunt has done some amazing work in the past, but this is clearly just primal scream therapy on paper. At least the pick up lines uttered by the sex crazed male zombies were fun.
-
CV hunt effortlessly blends social commentary with grotesque hardcore horror and plenty of dark humor.

‘Cockblock’ is a disturbing, angry, graphic, hypnotic mind fuck of a book that takes a simple concept and runs with for just the right number of pages. The story is a bare bones affair that will be familiar to anyone who has ever watched a zombie movie - the world starts falling apart with large swathes of the population turning on their neighbours and a group of survivors banding together to get through it. What’s different here is the nature of the aggressors, all male and attacking sexually more than physically. What follows is often graphic and unpleasant but always effective. The attackers shout cheesy chat up lines as they stalk their prey in a manner that seemed odd at first but increasingly becomes really chilling. This is clearly a book with a message, and a very current one at that - America’s misogynist-in-chief Donald Flump even gets to make an appearance. It’s laid on pretty thick but the book is no worse for that, even if Hunt’s writing can’t always keep pace with her passion and polemic. The book is never subtle, and it’s often too horrific to be entertaining, but I don’t think I’ll be forgetting it anytime soon.
-
Decided not to rate this book. It's more of a sexual horror which makes some of the language quite strong. I don't like to hear yet read the word c@#t and it was on every page just about from the get go. This doesn't make it a bad book, others may love it.
I still plan to read something else by this author as I'm not judging writing style, simply saying this story wasn't for me -
Jaw dropping. A brilliant combination of real fear and satire. To write a book that is so unbalanced with heavy, dark emotional trauma and laughable caricatures of evil people, and to make it a fluid, seamless, cohesive and smooth read is almost impossible. Yet the author has done it with such precision it almost looks easy. Which it ain't.
Cockblock is both thought-provoking, terrifying, and guaranteed to make incels cry. Would recommend. -
*Trigger Warnings* Rape and graphic violence throughout the entire story.
I've never read a book by C.V. Hunt before this one, and I guarantee it won't be my last! But I was in no way prepared for this insane, brutal, and terrifying book!
I've always said that what scares me the most are the things that can actually happen in real life- how cruel people can be to each other. Now Cockblock is not a story that can't actually come true, but the scary part is that it's not that far fetched.
The story is told and centers around Sonya and her girlfriend Callie, while on their way to a restaurant, come across some rude, cat calling group of men. What turns from cheesy, and somewhat humorous pickup lines quickly escalates to the men attempting to assault the two women. Making it to the safety of the restaurant, the women realize that they just escaped what was only the beginning of a horrific nightmare to come. Inside the restaurant, the President- who resembles Trump in every way- is spouting a hateful speech against women over the radio. This speech is being played over every electronic device imaginable, reaching almost of every man, turning them into sex-crazed mad men, with only one thing on their minds- rape every and all females who cross their paths to death. Sonya and Callie realize that the only way to stop the horrifying hysteria happening all over the country is to stop the rant from its source. They just need to avoid, or kill every male who comes across their path on the way to the White House. Easy Peasy!
I truly don't know where to start with this review. Hunt covers quite a few topics in this zombie-esq, gore fest. So I'll start with one of the issues I had. The men seemed to turn into raging mad zombies, only they don't want to eat their victims, they want to screw them to death. So this part of the story seemed a bit of a Romero rip off, but there are many more layers to the story so stay with me. And that is the other issue I had with the story- to a point. A huge pet peeve of mine is when an author inserts their own political views into their work, whether I agree with them or not. Books are an escape for me, an escape from the real world where right now especially, our political state is an absolute shit show. And our main villain is the President, who Hunt unashamedly, basically describes as a Trump twin. Now, this would normally annoy me to no end, but I see the point the author is trying to make, and I for one greatly appreciate it. This book displays the toxic masculinity that has seemed to take over our government in recent years. It shines a light on the current rape culture, misogynysm, and so much more in this well scripted narrative. The political parallels, however, were not shoved down our throats but woven in neatly in this intense tale.
This is a longer novella, with constant graphic imagery, and unusual, grotesque depravity. The men will have sex with any female, dead or alive- even mate with any body part- attached or not. I found myself almost instantly angry at the horrific and tragic events that was happening to the characters. But Hunt didn't write her females as helpless, far from it. Our heroin collects straggling survivors on her way to D.C. They fight off the men any way they can- my favorite was a cricket back that crushed many balls along their journey. In a society that shame women for speaking out against rape, and coddles men with the half assed excuses of "she was asking for it" or "they didn't mean to", women finally are given a win by Hunt over that part of our society's twisted mindset.
The writing is clean and efficient in bringing the sought after horror, with several not so subtle political nods and dark wit. This is not your average horror story and definitely not for the faint of heart. In between the lines are dark undertones deeply significant in today's real life current events. Raw, unrelenting with almost indescribable violence, Cockblock tells a subtle story between the horror lines, an anthem for women that is screaming to be heard. -
This book is really hard to read at times, but it's so powerful. This is a fresh take on the zombie apocalypse, and even more relevant in 2021.
-
Brief, brutal, & timely.

What. A. Book.
I have never read a book by Grindhouse Press or by C.V. Hunt – so I wasn’t sure what I was getting into. It was an insane book that I enjoyed deeply. Even a book as short as Cockblock was able to tell the story it wanted to while also invoking the emotions and feelings that Hunt wanted to.
At the center of this story is the controversy and insanity that is the current Presidency. You can tell that Hunt wanted to tell a story that at its heartfelt crazy and out of the blue – but when you read the whole thing and get into the characters you realize that it’s not that far off.
A radio broadcast seems to send every man into a madness. It makes them want to go out and rape each and every girl that they come across.
Reading this as a feminist who has a strong dislike for President Trump made it a lot easier. I’m sure that this book will find its way into the hands of a Trumpeter or a misogynist and they will not like it. If you see/read any one-star reviews – I would bet it’s from a person like that.
A fair word of warning – Cockblock is graphic. It needed to be – but it was graphic. Hunt told the story that she wanted to and did it in her way and I’m so glad she did. -
I'm pretty bummed at how "not for me" this was. It's so completely over-the-top in its blunt explicitness that it almost reads like a comedy (were it not for all of the extreme sexual violence). Maybe that's the intention?
I'd have loved to see this concept treated with more respect.
ETA: I've just realized this is the 45th book I've completed this year, which is amusing given the implied antagonist. Heh. -
Really didn’t enjoy this one. It felt kind of like a joke about sexual violence against women. Men turning into rapist zombies because of subliminal messaging by the president (an interesting plot)… Ok…. Then have them wandering around catcalling instead of moaning “brains”…. What the hell…. Then you can kill them by kicking them in the balls….. annnd you lost me. There could’ve been a much more realistic and serious approach to the initial concept and it would have been a much more impactful story.
The female/gay protagonists are also continuously described in a far fetched way (putting their sexuality before their actual personality, continuously describing their own anatomy as c*nts and p🐱ssies, taking time to shave their genitals in an end of the world situation), it seemed like no thought was put into characters who are actually being victimized and assaulted by the entire male population.
