The Great Escape: Tibet and Lhasa Reviews

"The Great Escape: Tibet and Lhasa". A splendid read. Sometimes swiftly moving like a Himalayan river or torrent and sometimes with a placid flow in a wider basin like the mighty Tsangpo River.
The book chronicles the author's journey to Lhasa and his stay in Lhasa for around seven years. By the end of 1950 during the political turmoil caused by Chinese aggression he left Tibet. All along the book we find a rare touch of love and respect for the culture and the people of Tibet. I end my review by quoting the last few lines from the book. "Wherever I live, I shall feel homesick for Tibet. I often think I can still hear the wild cries of geese and cranes and the beating of their wings as they fly over Lhasa in the clear cold moonlight. My heartfelt wish is that this book may create some understanding for a people whose will to live in peace and freedom has won so little sympathy from an indifferent world."
