Poetry Magazine March 2018 Reviews
-
I have now finished three issues of the Poetry subscription I started receiving in January, and this is my favorite one yet. I was really happy to read extended selections by Danez Smith and Eileen Myles, and I loved the two poems by Hieu Minh Nguyen so much that I folded down the page to remind me I need to seek out his books in the future. This issue contained an apparently semi-regular section called "The View from Here," where ordinary people write about their experiences of poetry. Two of these essays, by a guy who compares poetry to jazz and a guy who compares it to architecture, were dull and kind of pretentious, but I liked the ones by the hairdresser and the DJ who seeks out spoken-word albums from the civil rights movement to incorporate into his mixes. The issue finished with a lengthy review of Selected Poems of Thom Gunn. Gunn's poetry seems good, but the review is mostly tedious and a bit obnoxious in tone (the reviewer refers to T.S. Eliot as "catty," for example), so eventually I just skimmed the rest and called it a day. Still, overall I really liked this issue. Maybe I'll renew this subscription after all.

I love this magazine.

Another badass issue, with strong work from Kaveh Akbar, Anselm Berrigan, Hieu Minh Nguyen, Sarah Gambito, and more.

I enjoyed this issue, particularly Danez Smith’s pieces, whose work has often been hit or miss for me. On the whole a very solid group of poems.

Loved Eileen Myles' work in this issue.

There’s some really good stuff in here. Not an avid poetry reader but I’d consider getting a subscription of this publication based on this collection.
