Histoire des vampires (French Edition) Reviews

Purportedly written in 1820 and attributed to the author, this treatise on vampirism is contemporaneous with Polidori’s Vampyre and predates Bram Stoker’s Dracula, and hence offers a view of the subject matter before it was codified into a genre. This is a learned examination of myths and legends going back to antiquity, showing the evolution and interconnectedness of all manner of paranormal creatures through popular culture. The argument is also clear that these creatures are only cultural phenomena rather than pretending any reality, hence this is quite a modern, rational book. The author is full of scepticism in all the accounts, finding contradictions in the tales and rational explanations for the events related. It’s an early effort in debunking as well as classifying.
