Are You There God? It's Me, Margarita: More Cocktails with a Literary Twist Reviews

Still fabulous, though not *quite* as fresh as the first one. But I love the addition of snacks this time! These books are so fun and I will keep buying every single one that comes out. I really hope they keep churning’ out! 🍸

  • Naori

This is such a fun, quick read and for anyone who wants something light, this is enjoyable and half the time I was just laughing at the literary puns. With everyone mixing drinks and baking bread during this quarantine, I wish I could send this out to all of my friends who are making sad cocktails out of whatever is left in the house, because while I don’t suggest going out for supplies, I do think this will give you a good laugh while you consume your sub-par quarantine drinks, and dream of trying all of the fun literary-themed drinks in here once all of this is over.

Third of Tim Federle's recipe type books with drinks "punned" from names. This book goes back to literary with more than a few children and middle grade titles. The original book would be my favorite, but this is a fun one as well.

Another fun one from Tim Federle! I own and love his Tequila Mockingbird and I was not disappointed in this follow-up. I tried:

Portrait of the Artist as a Drunk Man - Surprisingly good! Simple. Strong.
The Tequila Sun Also Rises - Beautiful. Ok taste, especially as it melded. Wine on OJ a little weird.
The Hitchhiker's Mudslide to the Galaxy - Very sweet. Visually, not unique. (Not ugly, just not stand-out.) Would drink again, but not regularly.

These cocktail recipes look awesome, and I love all the pun filled descriptors for each one. These books are hilarious and fantastic. I can't wait to someday try out some of them. I just need the tools and ingredients.

  • Vicky

Since are rather complicated, however they're are some that I'll definitely try!

  • Sherri

More drinks and literary puns. This edition includes a few snacks.

Fun, quick read with twists on classic cocktails. Took not even 2 hours to read!

  • Jessica

This series of cocktail books is so clever. Are You There God? It's Me, Margarita is the 3rd I have read and they have all made me giggle.

I am not a heavy drinker so the likelihood of me actually using these books is low. I love a good pun and this book delivers. Every drink (and snack from the bar food chapter which I live for) is named after a book. Federle gives a short description (usually spoiler free) of how the book and recipe tie together.

The recipes that most caught my fancy are Call of the Wild Turkey (I love The Call of the Wild), David Copper Mug (when I do drink, the Moscow mule is my go to), and Watership Down the Hatch (it just sounds good). If you like puns, cocktails, or books this is for you.

I give this 4 stars for entertainment value, but only 3 (maybe 3.5) for the actual cocktails). They're generally clever, but the feasibility isn't always there (and I have a very well stocked bar). Also, the garnishes are frequently cute, but just a little weird (sure, cheddar cubes are funny for a drink inspired by Of Mice and Men, but they don't exactly sound appetizing in a drink.) But the drink titles and their introductions frequently made me chuckle, so I had a great time reading it, even if I would only make a few of the recipes.

Books and Booze! Two of my favorite things!! How can you go wrong?!

The answer is you cannot! This was the cutest lil book there ever was! I can't wait to dive into the others.

  • Kevin Wright

Witty and fun, with some seriously tasty-sounding drink recipes. Haven't tried them all yet, but somewhere in here is my new favorite cocktail. Also includes snacks and non-alcoholic drink recipes. Starts with a concise summary of equipment and techniques. Also loved the illustrations by Lauren Mortimer. Worth the price of admission just for the image of a handmaid wearing a beer guzzler bonnet.

Quick flip-through type book while at the library. I know this is the second one, so perhaps it reads a little better. Some of the titles were pretty fun (Billy Budd Light), but some were kind of forced. I also feel like he could have done a bit more with the literary tie-in. I like mixing drinks, and some of the recipes sounded pretty good.

    It was OK.

  • Liz

Great for book readers to get new books that they may have missed or need to reread.
Great for bartenders serving those book readers.
I think I need to open a Book Bar. A bar that serves these plus other drinks while its patrons read books.

  • Fred

Clever, cute and quippy. The drinks sound pretty good, too. Obviously not exactly a gripping page-turner, but a great one to read out loud and annoy your spouse with "listen to this one," ideas. #cheers

  • Jana Eichhorn

As fun of a read as the first one. I'm docking it one star because some of these drink recipes had me giving the book some major side-eye. (Malt liquor, vodka, and Tang? SRSLY?) Still a short and fun lil book.

    Laughter and Libations

A guide to readers on what to drink or a guide for drinkers on what to read? Yes! Simple and snarky book reviews with made to order drinks, and a musicology guide all in one.

  • Teri

Drinks, Books, Puns, Tim Federle gives you all three in the third book of cocktail recipes with a literary twist... he even includes snack recipes :D I can't wait to be able to have gatherings again to try some of these.

  • Maggie

Cute and funny, but I wish more recognition was given to work by female authors. At least a female author got the title (and the dedication)! P.S. I did not try making any of the cocktails. I'm only reviewing the actual writing.

  • Nick

This book is just too precious to take seriously. I am not melting a Klondike bar into anything.

  • Lamadia

Worth reading for the hilarious puns, but I also can't wait to try all the drinks while reading the appropriate books.

  • Samantha

Fun to read, plus a number of good cocktail recipes.

  • Rochelle

Funny title and drink recipes based on books😊 I don't drink so the recipes didn't mean much to me🍹🍸

  • Julie

    Meh...

  • Trish

This is a funny book on cocktails with a literary twist.
