Anton Chekhov: Selected Short Stories (Illustrated) Reviews

I read enough to call it finished; I may or may not read the rest of the stories. The worst problem is that this is a truly horribly made collection, stories that are in the public domain thrown together hastily to make a saleable kindle book. Why Jean Epstein gets to put his or her name on it is a mystery-- (s)he wrote nothing, no introduction or commentary of any kind, and worse, did not even put in a table of contents! There is no option but to read the stories in the order compiled, having no mechanism to toggle around to choose among them.
Without this major defect I would still only give he stories a 3 at best. Checkhov is hailed as a great short story writer, but universal human truth has a hard time peeking its way through the often inexplicable behavior of these 19th century Russian peasants. I usually admire terse prose, but too much is lost in translation here. These stories are just boring.
And what do they mean "illustrated"?!
