Every vigilante has to start somewhere. This story is the beginning of the urban legend 'Reinhardt'.

A man with strange abilities epitomises the unusual within the cutthroat city. He will go all out and damn the consequences. Will the metropolis of New Hampton devour him, or will he put a dent into the unchecked urban decay?

Follow Reinhardt's journey and discover how he found himself single-handily taking on one of the biggest and most dangerous gangs in New Hampton's corrupt history.

The Lone Vigilante is a sci-fi urban mystery novella set before the events of The Rain: The Government Rain Mysteries Book One.

Think of the series like a jigsaw, you can read in any order. The story could be read the main novel, The Rain, first and then the prequels in any order. Alternatively, you could read the prequels and then the main book. Whichever way you choose to read you will achieve the same result, but within reason, it will be a unique trail of breadcrumbs for each reader.

The Lone Vigilante (The Mutant Rain Origins #2) Reviews

When I first started reading this series, I thought, "Oh, stay out of the rain." Now I'm thinking it would be cool to get in the rain.

This again is a seriously good read and another fast paced romp through the seedy world of L. A. Frederick's 'The Rain'.

This time, we are introduced to a very enigmatic mutant who is one of the good guys. His ability to travel large distances in leaps and bounds and super strength may seem reminiscent of 'The Hulk', however, this man has a whole new way of dealing with the scum in the city and is a bit more subtle in his 'transformation'. We are introduced to some of the lowlife elements in the world and the whole jigsaw starts falling nicely into place.
As with the other stories, this is fast paced, pretty brutal and leaves you wanting more of this amazingly twisted story.

A short story but well fleshed out, about the character ‘Reinhardt’ , not his real name, who is one of the ‘special’ people being affected by the rain in New Hampton.

He has powers and decides to use them to rid the city of crime and calls for a favour from a friend called Peter, a cop but now ex-cop, for some equipment and supplies to help in this.

He persuades Peter to join him on his first outing, more for company and encouragement, but things go a little haywire and not as expected. We get to see the beginning of The Vigilante character as the book progresses and then continues in the full length book, The Rain.

A more fulfilling short story than The Lost Boy, The Forgetful Man and The Last Doctor - all of which are very short but have a place to play in providing snippets of the life of those characters and explaining some background behind The Rain and where these powers have stemmed from.

I believe it probably makes it easier to follow along in the main book, The Rain, if you have read a couple of these beforehand - I’m not sure of the actual reading order as I didn’t find these numbered - but went by the book release dates

    A solid short story

I enjoyed visiting New Hampton again, to see the Vigilante's first mission. I now understand why he is reluctant to involve anyone else in his mission to clean up this dark, rain soaked city.

The rain changed Reinhardt – for the better. His body, his strength, his senses all improved when touched the rain that constantly soaked the city. But the city of New Hampton was imploding – only no one really understood that yet. Society was crumbling, and the city leaders were clueless (or uncaring). The city infrastructure couldn’t stand up under the influx of more and more homeless or the lawlessness that increased day by day.

The Lone Vigilante is a glimpse into the beginnings of the mysterious protector of what is left of New Hampton (and featured in The Rain) and simply known as Reinhardt. In this side story to The Government Rain Mysteries series, Reinhardt and an old friend test his new-found abilities on a gang of criminals operating out of “The Watchroom” called The Deadeyes.”

This story and series, although titled “Mysteries,” touches a broad range of reading interests (mystery, urban mystery, mutants, horror, sci-fi, dystopian, urban horror). There is something for almost everyone.

I voluntarily reviewed an Advance Reader copy of this book.

This book brings the character Reinhardt into his own personal light. It decribes why he is what he is,   a vigilante for New Hampton.
Even though this is a short story, that is joined to a series by L.A.Fredrick, it shows the talent of great author that knows how to draw you in.
