After fighting for a losing cause, Corporal John Nichols returns from the long and bitter Civil War to his farm in Georgia only to discover that everything he thought he'd been fighting for has been taken from him.

My first western since high school

I'm stuck at home with the flu, and figured since I'm off work, why not catch up on one of my favorite author's works? As the title of my review indicates, this is my first Western in a long time, so I was a little apprehensive about reading it. But like all of Hopf's novels, I found it very enjoyable. I liked The End of the World series for a lot of reasons, but the concept of the EMP and its aftermath is probably a big reason. Luckily, Hopf has a distinct writing style that made me feel very at home with this book. He moves the story with a very clear but fast paced style of narrative that makes it almost impossible to put his books down. Reading this brought me back to my childhood of watching True Grit, Outlaw Josey Wales or Bonanza with my dad. If Westerns aren't necessarily your thing, give this one a shot anyway. G. Michael Hopf is an excellent story teller regardless of genre and I'm sure anyone would find this one to be a good read.

    Vengeance

Interesting read. Not the author's usual genre. Reading the book, it seemed like this is the direction the author had intended his writings to be. Western with a touch of 'romance'.

Whatever the genre we still have a leading character with a sense of purpose and high morals. The end of the book made us want more because he was now going to do things for himself not for his loved ones or his country. We will now experience the bad boy if the author plans on a series.

Reading the other reviews I can tell it was written by men. Here is a woman's viewpoint. Looking for more of John Nichols' adventures.

Fast paced, and exciting are but a few words to describe this book. This story begins at the end of the Civil War and all the heart ache that war brought. Out for vengeance, John tracks down those whom destroyed his loved ones. Hopf has created a well woven story with a masterful grip on his subject. The Wild West was a place of refuge for those who wanted to start over and create a new life, a new image after the Civil War, and two of Hopf’s characters have done so. I can’t and won’t give out spoilers, well, more than is here, but if you’re a fan of Hopf’s work, this is a must read!

It's great fun seeing an author switch gears and engage another genre. Geoff does a straight up job with all the elements, including twists and turns, that make a good Western. There's doses of humor, history, and a good measure of honesty about war and the karmic craters often imparted to all participants and bystanders. I've enjoyed "The End" series immensely and look forward to seeing what unfolds with this new hero, The Wanderer, carves his legacy out west.

I was surprised to see, after I finished this book, that this author has written other books. This novel was reasonably interesting, but the writing was pretty unpolished and with little finesse of vocabulary. There were also unresolved editing issues (grammar and usage errors as well as weak word choices.). The ending was unsatisfying as well.

I enjoyed this book very much. First, because it was Christian based. Secondly, I am partial to western fiction. Combined makes for a very good read. More & more Christian books of various genres are appearing on reading lists, and that is so good to see. I hope the author continues in this direction.

    Interesting book

This story was filled with hope and sorrow. It was terrible that war brings out bad in a person. Getting back is worse I believe. My family settled in the west and a lot happen to them to.

    Search For Vengeance

The search for the man responsible for the death of his wife and daughter takes many twists and turns. A very good read with action and suspense.

    Quite good

The vengeance trail is never an easy one. Our hero has followed it relentlessly for a decade. How will it end????

  • Bill Zawrotny

An absolutely atrocious book...100% predictable with unreadable dialog. I have read most of Hopf's other books, so I picked up this book with high expectations. What a let down...

I really liked listening to this book and it’s my first western. The narrator’s voice is like butter. I just wish it hadn’t been so predictable.
