A powerful collection, these eight poems sting like a lover. They know where the bruises are and cut right to the bone.
Wildfire Heart Reviews
-
a strong collection of poems where the author's anger rings achingly true in its right to exist with each verse, using intricate and clever imagery. i especially liked Epitaph For Burning Palm Trees, Los Angeles 2016 after poet Richard Siken, and will look further into Lawton's work.
-
watch me fall into the arms of anyone who will look my way / find god in the line of your jaw and break it / and wipe us all off the map
LOSE YOUR PHONE. FORGET YOU EVER EXISTED.
We didn't bury each other deep enough.
4.5 stars. -
Reading these poems made me feel nostalgic and remember how my relationship with poetry changed over the years. Lawton captured all the words and feelings I had when I was just a bit younger, and it's probably more a testament to have much I've grown when I can read these poems now without feeling so bruised or connected to them. Honest, if perhaps a little simplistic, but "Wildfire Heart" is a perfect little encapsulated world one can dive into, enjoy, and resurface back out from again.

"find god in the line of your jaw and break it"
"I didn't want you to be the first / boy to say 'I love you' to me"
"So the boy wanted to live inside your body / without paying any rent and you let him stay / because hey / it beats living all alone" -
i went back to the ocean and asked her / how many bones have i dug up with my graveyard mouth? / and all she could say was:
“you’re a cemetery just like me.”
A bit of a hit and miss but Lawton gets some really stellar lines in there... -
'I love you sounds like getting your teeth pulled out'
-

My fav was "There's blood everywhere but He's too busy kissing me to care"
