    ➦Do you like billionaires?

➦I've never met one. But I'm sure they're mighty nice.

➦So once in a while I indulge myself in a billionaire tale or two, so sue me.

➦It's always that "regular girl falls for a spectacular rich sex on a stick man" that gets me. And you know what, I went in blind. Meh, let's face the facts, I barely ever read the blurbs these days.

➦So the book opens with a woman going for an interview in hopes of getting a PA position to some rich dude. So she gets there and it's all suppah fanceh. AND THEN. He appears. Wearing an eye patch. And I'm all like HELLZ YEAH, PIRATE PORN!

➦But this book actually turned out to be a very slow burn romance with pretty good character development. And no, he's not a pirate. He's an architect who is losing his eye sight and he needs the heroine to pretend to be his girlfriend and help him at social events. He is trying really hard to convince everyone around him that his sight is not failing him.

➦Anywhooooooo, this is pretty mellow, actually, for my pervy standards, so normally I wouldn't go as far as calling this an erotic romance, but that's just me. The writing style is not as blunt when it comes to sexy scenes but the situations which the author created here are definitely pretty steamy. I liked both characters, I had no problem staying in the book. There were parts that I wish were more developed, like the medical side of the hero's illness, but, overall, verra verra good. If you like fake relationship tropes and second chance romances, do give this one a shot!

    2.5 stars.

I was excited to read this book because the blurb sounded really interesting and the unusual story had me intrigued but it turned out to be just an okay read for me. I expected more.

I liked the premise of the story involving a hotter-than-hell well-known billionaire architect loosing his eyesight and in need of a fake girlfriend for four days to hide a life-changing secret.
But this was a slow burner start for me, I had a bit of a hard time getting into the story. Mostly because I had so many mixed feelings about the characters. I didn't connect well with them and that prevented me to fully get into their story. Sven and Inez’s relationship lacked chemistry and emotion and their interactions drove me nuts. And when they finally get together it was a bit backward and forward, and much of what they were saying or doing was just a puzzle to me. I didn't feel their actions added up to their emotions somehow.

Overall, I enjoyed the whole story and the author writing style but found myself getting frustrated with both characters. I just didn’t quite click with them. It was all me and my preferences at fault here as the book did receive good ratings from other readers. Just my personal opinions as to why this book failed to fully satisfy the hopeless romantic that I am. :D

    High hopes, meeting reality...

The blurb got me believing that I would read a new twist on rich assholes alphas. Finally, one who couldn't win a marathon and make money and tango at the same time, while also doing back flips and looking sexy as fuck with a well placed sweat drop enhancing his 6packs at the background. It really tried to be different but ended up uncomfortable.

Heroine was funny at first, then got emotional and lashed out -as expected from the hormonal female population... Seriously though, is it really hard to write a heroine who keeps her wits about and goes on her book life with logical decisions?

I didn't feel the attraction between the characters, their "traumatic past"s felt forced, drama going on was yawn inducing. Still it was not a bad book and I didn't feel like DNFing at any point.

Hawthorne wrote the BEST heroine. THE BEST. I fell off my chair laughing during the interview scene; Inez was no pushover and was a perfect match for Sven, his "Royal Alphaness". That girl was the right amount of cray cray mixed with wit and smarts. I loved this book but the ending could have been better which brought my rating down to 4 stars; otherwise, a brilliant read.

  • Carvanz

Inez is always looking for a job because she just can’t seem to keep one. She’s outspoken, unrepentant and one tough cookie but there’s a reason she has so many walls around her. Sven is losing his eyesight and will soon be losing his livelihood. He’s in need of someone to act as his significant other while helping to lead him through the social obligations he has. Despite their rocky start they quickly become something like friends and then more.

This was an enjoyable read with characters that I cared about. Some of the other woman and other man situations annoyed me but I was able to get past it without losing sight of the bigger picture. Both Inez and Sven have been scarred emotionally in the past and struggle to release the hurt and embrace the healing each other can offer.

There is some angst but I would consider it mild and a bit of humor – Sven inebriated and singing 99 bottles of beer on the wall as a way of winning Inez will go down in the history of my mind as one of the most charming episodes I’ve ever read.

Altogether a very nice read and an author I will be checking out further.

    Audible review May 2017

I did a reread through audible. This is 2 years after I read the book for the first time. The narrator did a very good job. One of my biggest complaints with narrators is when a female narrator can't do the male impressions. It's very distracting if they can't read the males part successfully and I did not have that issue with this narrator. In fact she did a good job with all the different character. I could easily tell when she was reading another character. As for the story, I still loved it! I wouldn't change my original review.

    1st read review November 2015

This is my first time reading Author Aria Hawthorne and I was not disappointed. There are so many Billionaire books out there that it's really hard to find one that was maturely written and isn't based solely on sex. Closer was definitely a pleasant surprise. I enjoyed every moment of getting to know Sven and Inez. I especially enjoyed Inez in this book. She wasn't weak or a simpering fool. She was proud, independent, snarky and unimpressed with Sven's money. It was beautiful to watch Inez slowly charm a bitter Sven into realizing a better future that is not revolved around his billions. I will be looking forward to reading more from Aria Hawthorne. This is the story of Sven and Inez, two persons who have lost faith in love!

I really liked this book! The story sounded known, billionaire falls for poor, honest and proud girl but it was nothing usual about it! The billionaire had issues that had nothing to do with abused past and the girl was indeed poor, honest and proud but not naive or shy! The best part of this story was the feelings! There were so many times that my heart lost a bit, that I've held my breathe anticipating what will happen. The writing of Ms. Hawthorne touched on a level that I couldn't imagine possible. It was direct, honest, funny and emotional. I really loved it!

Inez is an amazing woman. She fell in love in the past but she got really hurt so she doesn't care about relationships anymore. Her only concern is to have a job in order to survive. She has an amazing personality! She is honest and she says what she thinks even if it can risk her job! She is sassy but educated and clever! I really admire her for all her choices!

Sven is a typical billionaire, at least in the beginning. He is arrogant and he wants everything to happen his way. The best part of him though is that when he sensed that maybe Inez is different from what was known to him, he gave it a chance! He let his guard down and it was great to witness how someone can change in such a beautiful way!

Their interactions were fantastic! With the sassy ways of Inez and the arrogant side of Sven, I've really enjoyed their discussions! Their chemistry was present from the very beginning!

I need to mention the grandmother of Inez! Nana brought tears of laughter in my eyes every time she was saying something! I totally loved her!

The end of the book was good. It felt a bit flat to me until the last chapter that was really good and that's why I had to remove a star from the rating. Still, I really liked this book and I definitely recommend to everyone who loves a good romance!

  • Donna ~ The Romance Cover

This was one of those trawl through Amazon to find something to read finds and even though the title screams cliché it actually wasn't and I was pleasantly surprised. What drew me to this book was the synopsis and also that the heroines name is my sisters middle name (don't laugh) and so I gave it a go.

I thoroughly enjoyed the story, I loved Inez's sass and wit and how she wouldn't take crap from anyone, especially Sven. I love a broken a man and for a man that depends on his eyesight for his work going blind does not bring out the best in him but Inez becomes his eyes and a lot more. These two have their pasts and their problems, but together, even though they were total opposites, they just fit.

My only niggle was the conclusion to the blindness, while it was intimated in the beginning, the execution just didn't ring true and was a tad convenient.

Let me just start off by saying, I loved this story!

This author is new to me with four other titles under her belt at this time. I loved the fact that even from the first page I was delighted with the story and the fine character development.

It takes a special story to keep me up late into the wee hours and this book was one that captured my attention completely. The unique storyline, dry wit with a touch of sarcasm and the author's overall ability to tell a story beautifully had me all in!

I know what you are thinking. Billionaire romances? They are all the same.... Except this one has something special. One to definitely pick up and enjoy when you have a quiet weekend. I did and I am checking out her other titles too!

Surprisingly, I really enjoyed this book!
This was the first book I've read from this author and it was a fast, short read.

The characters were strong, intelligent, ambitious, and well written, and the story had me engaged right till the very end.

I really liked reading from the characters POV because it gave me (the reader) an opportunity to really get to 'know' the characters.
The secondary characters, in particular Inez's grandmother also made the story.

    LOVED the ending!

I look forward to reading more of this author's work.

This book is about a wealthy and super-hot Dutch architect, Sven, who designed the tallest Chicago skyscraper called The Spire. But he is hiding a secret that would hurt his career...he's losing his eyesight. He ends up hiring Inez to play his pretend girlfriend and help him get through the few days to help him get through the most important week of his life. Inez needs money to support her grandmother and daughter and when she arrives at the interview with Sven she is desperate and agrees.

I am a sucker for the billionaire man and the down-on-her-luck feisty damsel trope because it is a bit like Cinderella for me. This book doesn't disappoint. It was a bit humorous in parts. I thought the secondary characters like Inez's grandmother was pretty well-developed, but I thought there should've been a little more effort put forth to develop the main characters - Sven and Inez. I really couldn't completely relate to either of these characters. Also, though most of the story was well-paced, there were some parts that I felt dragged a bit and I hurriedly skipped over paragraphs to continue on.

All in all I was pretty happy with the story.

3 stars but only for the heroine and her wit.

  • Syndi

I like this book ok. I foind tue writting and story building is dragging. The chemistry between Sven and Inez can be explored more deeply. I feel the author putting words upon words that is not helping with the intense of the story.

The plot is promising. I like the idea a billionaire needing a stranger help because he is going blind. Character development can be explored/ edited much better.

    Overal the story is OK.

If there is one trope I love in romance, it is the love-hate relationship stories. I absolutely adore them. There is something about the fiery passion, the tension and the ultimate connection between the hero and heroine that is a pure weakness for me. Closer was the perfect example. I loved Sven and Inez and began to root for them right away. Their story was magical!

Closer was so much more than the typical Billionaire or "pretend girlfriend" story you find nowadays. It had heart, passion, enthralling characters and a unique story. All of these facets helped make this story standout for me! I highly recommend it as it was full of endearing moments with a swoony hero, sassy heroine and laugh out loud sarcastic moments and comebacks. This is a definite winner! 4 stars! ~Ratula

    ***Minor spoilers***

Inez is in a difficult situation. She's looking for a job through an agency, and she really needs the money. She has to support her grandmother and her daughter as a single mother after the father had cheated on her. She's desperate for money, and when she's given another opportunity through the agency, she takes it. She meets Sven van der Meer, a famous billionaire architect who is hiring a woman to act as his girlfriend in order to disguise his failing vision from the public. Not only that, but he will pay Inez $5000 per day for a few days to keep up the charade. Neither can anticipate their growing closer, but when both of their exs seem to love making their lives difficult, it becomes increasingly difficult for them to be happy.

I went into this book not really knowing what to expect. I haven't really read a "billionaire romance" before (that I can recall, at least) and I think I was pleasantly surprised. Reading a book with a situation you've never encountered before is always a good thing. While that doesn't mean it wasn't predictable, because it was, it still had an air of uniqueness to it.

I enjoyed the writing the most. The author could write suspense really well, and did a good job of not making things seem tedious. I found the basic storyline good as well, but the other things I only thought were average. Inez and Sven were interesting characters, but I didn't feel particularly attached to either of them. In fact, my favourite character would probably be Inez's grandmother, since it felt like she was the only one who could see the whole picture and wasn't afraid to speak her mind. She was quite amusing in her dialogue as well. The plot details were okay, although something that Sven does later on in the book was pretty detestable, and I think it made the book drag on a bit where it didn't really have to.

Overall, this was a pretty good read with some flaws. The writing was great, but I didn't find the main characters all that interesting. The plot was predictable but still enjoyable. I would read another book by this author, and I would recommend it to anyone thinking about reading it. However, if you asked me to recommend you a romance novel, this wouldn't be my go-to.

*whistles* Where to begin, where to begin…

This was going to be a 4 star book around 50% and then it gradually went to 3.75, then down to a 3.5 rating, which is always disappointing when you enjoy the start of something but it loses it way for you.

It started out interesting, the premise was something I absolutely knew i’d love as long as the execution was good, it just caught my eye as I was surfing NetGalley and I knew I had to request it! Like I mentioned, the beginning was good, fast paced, had some witty banter and what look like a protagonist with a steady spine on her…Unfortunately it just lost it’s way for me, for several reasons, which I’ll touch upon with minor spoilers, but beware if that bothers you.

1)The whole eye sight coming and going, and then instantly recovering , made zero sense to me. Granted I am not trained in that field and have no factual evidence to say that would never happen but it seemed very outlandish.

    2) After we hit the middle to end half of the book I began disliking Sven, his attitude rubbed me the wrong way and I just didn’t enjoy him as much. He did a lot of shit at the end that just left me gobsmacked and uncomfortable, the resolution wasn’t satisfying enough for me to forgive him.

    3) Whilst it wasn’t insta-love in the first moment, it was however in 3 days time they were acting like they couldn’t live without each other and it was sooooo cringy. Especially one line about not being able to live without Inez and Luna in his life, note that he had only met Luna (her daughter) ONCE. I just…?

Things I did like about the Closer:

The names, Inez, Luna, Sven etc… Beautiful and uncommon choices!

Obviously the start of the book.

It could have been a lot worse but it just sat in the solid place of average for me. Sorry, I really honestly hate being negative about a book when publishers are kind enough to send me them for free but at the end of the day I have to be honest with myself and you guys and this one just didn’t cut it for me.

    description

Closer is the first book I've read by Aria Hawthorne, so I'm completely ignorant to her other novels. In her bio it says that Closer is her NEWEST erotic romance novel. To me, that insinuates that she's written other erotic romance novels, right? Well, here's my thing ... I didn't think that this was an erotic romance novel. Sure, that could be because I've read so many romance novels lately that I've turned into a giant perv and nothing shocks me anymore. It all boils down to this one question: How exactly does a book get classified as "erotic"? If it's racy scenes, I just didn't think that Closer was any more risque than other romance genre novels. This doesn't have anything to do with my rating, I just think that this book is classified incorrectly, that's all.

Anywho ... I think that the concept for Closer was pretty interesting! Not too many books out there that are about a billionaire architect that is going blind whom hires a random lady to pose as his girlfriend and guide-dog. I didn't really know what to expect but I found myself immediately transfixed with the snarky conversations that went on between Sven and Inez. Man. She's a firecracker! And with him being this domineering, always-in-control dude who always gets his way ... the push and pull between them was just delicious. I couldn't wait to see what they would say to each other. I also enjoyed reading about the plight that Sven was in ... he's unwilling to give up the control that he needs to relinquish so that Inez can actually help him with what he hired her for ... that's quite a tough position to be in. At least I guess it is. I'm controlling but I not going to give that up. I'm not a quitter.

The storyline was something that kept me engaged throughout the entire book. I read it in one sitting and I was disappointed when it was finished. I did wish that there was a little more to the story. There were quite a few things going on during the whole thing but at times it felt like there could have been just ... more. I would have liked more depth, I guess. I wanted some of the scenes to last longer than they did and I felt like it would have been a little more entertaining if they had been fleshed out a bit. But then again, it did keep me entertained and I didn't get irritated with the speed of things and nothing was boring or long-winded. All in all, I enjoyed my reading experience with this one. I think that I might pick up another book by this author in the future because I know that I'll be in for an interesting ride.

Hmm, I just don't think I care for the whole billionaire romance... Everyone is so awful and pompous and catty and gross. Sven, I had compassion for because he realized how big of an A-hole he was and he fell for Inez so quickly, they fell for each other so quickly but it was believable.
What I didn't and don't like, and I have hundreds of reviews that rant about this very thing, is when the "bad guys" get away with being horrible people. Sven's brother and the other dude and his ex, seriously, I wanted to get rid of all of them. And Inez's ex Enzo, everytime he'd cheat and say "you're mad about it because you love me" Well no shit dumbass, she did love him and he kept cheating on her then some how trying to justify it then tell her that because it upset her it meant that she cared about him and that was reason to stay together or get back together.... is there anything more ridiculous? I mean seriously? And she almost bought it that second time until she saw him sleeping with Sarah.... it was disgusting, he was disgusting and I can't believe he came out ahead in this scenario too!

I like single mom reads and hunky hero's that don't care to raise someone else's kid like their own... that's why I picked this book up, it had a "real" feeling synopsis..I dunno though, I just did not at all like the other people in this story and the influence and effect it had on the main characters. I probably won't read the others. I can't handle it.

Finally finished this. I did not really like it at all. Inez is a single mom who takes a job pretending to be a billionaires girlfriend for a week. He’s a jerk at first, she’s outspoken, he’s got a secret she needs to keep from his business associates, she tries to go back to her daughter’s father but catches him cheating. Ends up liking her boss until she gets mad and runs off. I could keep going but I don’t want to spoil anything. Wasn’t feeling the connection. It was sort of formal sounding but then her grandma and his mother were down to earth. Also got irritated-she was breastfeeding but yet they had sex and he was all over her boobs. In real life there would’ve been a huge mess! 🤨

  • Beyond the Pages with Eva K

Wow! That was one thrilling ride. Sven and Inez sizzled together. I could detect the special chemistry that they shared at their initial meeting. The slow build, burn, and reconciliation were totally worth the wait.

    Aria Hawthorne
    Netgalley review
    4 stars

I dislike that feeling when a story does not grab me from those 1st few chapters , but I’m not one to give up and Closer turned out to be that one book that I can honestly say I’m glad I continued. It is not your normal billionaire romance, but a look into 2 lives vastly different that will require each other to survive. Famous architect Sven Van der Meer , has just created the Spire, a new sky scraper in Chicago. He should be living life on a high, but after a terrible accident he is left almost totally blind and discovering his ex girlfriend was engaged to his brother, yeah life for Sven is not all roses... until he hires a girlfriend. This arrangement should be perfect, enter Inez Sanchez.

Inez Sanchez has a terrible record with work, unable to hold down a job for more than a few hours and now she is about to interview for a flexible job that should earn her much more than previously. Not holding much hope she meets Sven , he’s arrogant, clearly rich, has an accent that could disarm any woman and will pay her $5000 per day for 4 days work. Easy right? Well no, with a 4 month old daughter and a sight impaired grandmother the money is desperately needed, but the nights working make for a few hard nights, but $20 000 will make everything better. Taking the job, Inez discovers that it is not just her that needs help. The arrogant man behind the expensive suits and fancy car is not what she expected. All of a sudden it is Sven who needs her.

The pair really bounce off each other in a battle of wills and humour. Inez has a quick wit, and smart mouth, something that should get her in trouble, but serving it up to those who feel the need to belittle her and take Sven for granted, the battle lines are drawn. No longer feeling like a job and more like real life, Inez and Sven discover feelings for each other. Hiding isn’t an option for Sven as he requires Inez to help with sight and dressing, but what he didn’t expect was her to take on his brother, ex girlfriend and business partner. Not afraid to speak what’s on her mind, Inez starts to feel less like an employee and more like a girlfriend.

Taking that step will change everything for Sven and Inez but no one will be more surprised by what follows than themselves. Truth and lies will wreck what they built in those 4 days... Can Sven get her back or lose her and her baby forever?

I don’t have a deep like of Insta love stories, and this fell into that for me. I prefer a slow burn or friends to lovers. So when they’re in love after 4 days it’s a meh for me. Cause it doesn’t have any base in reality for me.

I did enjoy that he loved her kid and we didn’t see or hear any more from the sperm donor. Grandma was funny and the ex girlfriend was perfectly skanky.

I would read more from this author as I liked the writing style but I don’t need billionaires. Just wealthy guys ;)

The Narrator sounds unemotional and robotic

The story is well written and there were some surprises for me

The heroine is well written and certainly not a doormat, very unusual for this trope

The hero's blindness really added to the story.

    Izzy's Nana was hilarious 😂

Insta love trope (within 4 days)

This is the first book I have read by the author and I wasn't disappointed. The author knows how to draw you into the story and have you hooked until the very end. I loved feeling the connection between the two characters and loved that you were kept on your toes. The way the characters come together to help each other will touch a place in your heart. Overall, the author did an amazing job.

Inez hasn't been able to keep a job because she is very blunt and when she needs money, she has no choice but to take the next job that comes available. After her ex-boyfriend cheated on her and she needed to provide for her family, she will do whatever she must to make sure she can provide for them. She takes the job of being a fake girlfriend for the rich man Sven van der Meer who is going blind and is an architect. She doesn't hold back from Sven or his friends and when they spend more time together, Inez can't help but start falling for him. She has one secret that he doesn't know about and she doesn't plan on telling him. When things turn for the worst, she leaves Sven but it was the hardest choice she made, especially when she misses him so much.

Sven has always wanted to build the largest building in the world. He feels that The Spire would be it and he would be so joyed to see it however he feels like there is a piece of himself missing. When an accident occurs and he starts to go blind, he needs help. He hires Inez to be his fake girlfriend for a week and lets her know that he will depend on her a lot. He is worried that he will go fully blind in his eye and every day he tries to make it better, only he is getting worse. Now that he is spending more time with Inez, he realizes she is just the woman for him. He will stop at nothing to get her to see that he is the man for her. Only after a party, Sven realizes that he will never see Inez again. Now he must do whatever he can to win her back.

I highly recommend this story, it's an amazing story that you will be able to fall into. The way the characters come together to help each other and others show exactly the type of people they are. The chemistry between them is smoking hot and a love forms between them that neither realizes until the last moment.
