Ten thousand years ago, humans and fairies fought a great battle for the magical island of Ireland. When it became clear to the fairy families that they could never win, they decided to move their civilisation underground and keep themselves hidden from the humans. All the fairy families agreed on this, except the eighth family, the demons.

The demons planned to lift their small island out of time until they had regrouped and were ready to wage war on the humans once more. However, the time spell went wrong, and the island of Hybras was catapulted into Limbo, where it has remained for ten thousand years.

Now, the tainted time spell is deteriorating and demons are being sucked back into the present space and time. The fairy Council are naturally concerned about this and are monitoring any materialisations. When the spell’s deterioration accelerates, the materialisations become unpredictable. Even the fairy scientists cannot figure out where the next demon will pop up.

But someone can. Artemis Fowl, the teenage criminal mastermind, has solved temporal equations that no normal human should be intelligent enough to understand. But Artemis Fowl is no normal human.

So when a confused and frightened demon pops up in a Sicilian theatre, Artemis Fowl is there to meet him. Unfortunately, he is not the only one. A second, mysterious party has also solved the temporal equations, and manages to abduct the demon before Artemis can secure him.

This is a disaster for the fairy People, because this demon was no ordinary fairy. He was the last demon warlock, and as such held the key to the survival of the entire demon race.

It is up to Artemis and his old comrade, Captain Holly Short to track down the missing demon and rescue him before the time spell dissolves completely and the lost demon colony returns violently to Earth.

"I know you. You're that female elf."

"I don't like the surface. It's too close to the sun and I have sensitive skin."

With Opal Koboi being temporarily put out of action, the author explores a completely new territory with this fifth book. This is the first time Colfer has taken such a significant change in storyline direction, while introducing a load of new characters from an entirely new setting. But it paid off much better than I had expected: the characters, plot, and flow are great as ever, and it was nice to have such a change for once. However, I prefer still the lower elements and earth events more compared to the new setting.

"Conscience. What a lovely word. The sh in the middle."

"Never a dull moment.. Hey, my first cliché."

The Lost Colony (Artemis Fowl #5), Eoin Colfer

Artemis Fowl: The Lost Colony involves bringing the demon island Hydras back from "Limbo" with the help of N°1, a powerful demon warlock. Artemis, Butler, Holly, Mulch, and Foals reunite after Artemis encounters a demon from the island Hydras, and Holly and Mulch capture the pixie fish smuggler Doodah Day.

Foals tells them after the Battle of Taillte, the war for land against fairy and human, the demon fairy family sent themselves out of time on the island Hydras, and that on their island their time can be anything on ours.

The time spell is crumbling, and demons are appearing on earth without warning. If the humans discover the demons, they will inevitably uncover the rest of the fairies.

Artemis and his now friends go after the demon N°1, who finds out that he is actually a demon warlock, and has extremely dangerous powers. N°1 is kidnapped by child prodigy Minerva Paradizo, whom they encounter multiple times when trying to stop her research.

Minerva intends to present N°1 to humans to win the Nobel Prize. She eventually lets go of her project and joins them after Billy Kong, her security guard, "opens the Trojan Horse", also known as revealing the traitors he planted at the Paradise Chateau.

Artemis, Holly, N°1, and Qwan, a demon warlock that N°1 frees from a gargoyle spell that turned him into stone, travel through time and space to Hydras, which Artemis had planned to get rid of with the live bomb Billy Kong had given Holly to annihilate the demons in Hydras, due to his belief that his brother was killed by a gang of demons. In Hydras, the pack leader Leon Abbot (N'Zall) and his army of demons fight Artemis and his friends.

They knock Leon unconscious and create a bomb explosion powerful enough for them to use its energy - converting it into magic, using Holly, N°1, Qwan, and Leon Abbot's magic (which he gained from fusing with Qweffor, an apprentice warlock) and Artemis' stolen magic to send the island back to earth, where 3 years have passed because of the time spell. Artemis and Minerva are now noted to be very close in age. The book ends with Holly finding out that Mulch has recruited Doodah Day, and Artemis finds out that he is the brother of toddlers.

No matter what dimension you're in, there's a big-headed male trying to take over the world.

I wasn't expecting this. I was trying too hard to like this book. But I couldn't. I just couldn't! :(

For God Sake, Eoin!!! Change the pattern. I have guessed by now how you will start the book. Of course, after reading the last four books of the series. So I was bored in the beginning except for one thing. There was action and little excitement. Or I also consider the excitement in this was slightly unnecessary. Maybe it's just me?? Don't know but I was feeling just like that. The most important thing of my dislikes is the Villain. I couldn't connect with her. I liked Opal Koboi more.

Nevertheless, I enjoyed after the beginning. It wasn't that bad but wasn't that good as compared to the previous books of the series.

Done reading THE LOST COLONY - Book 5 in Artemis Fowl Octalogy, entirely read it in Amazon Kindle. Narrated in third-person perspective in 16 chapters, the story revolves around the time-travel adventure of Artemis Fowl. He is in search of a warlock demon who can potentially stop a war between demons and humans. Sadly, I dislike it. One, there are many new characters introduced. While reading, it feels like all these new characters are unnecessarily packed in one book, resulting to topsy-turvy middle chapters. Two, the setting changes constantly. There are times they are in Europe, after that, they are in Asia then they find themselves in the outer space. Thank God. The shocking cliffhanger saves the day!

Second time around and I'm seriously enjoying the crap out of this series. Maybe it's Butler's sass or Holly and Artemis working so well together. Or Maybe it's Artemis becoming more human and acting like a teenager a bit? Who knows. Just know that I'm enjoying this whole entire thing.

Artemis is going through something he can't control: Puberty. It's honestly hilarious to watch him in this book because he's all about being in control. So since he's getting older and his body is changing he really wants to be in control still. Or needs to be. Yet, Butler clearly states if he can be in charge of his hormones he would be the first.

I especially loved Artemis and Minerva interacting with one another because they are both geniuses. Then there's Butler who I feel more tuned with because he always sounds so confused when Artemis tries to explain things that he doesn't understand. Like, I am right there with you buddy.

In the end, I'm dying to see how he's going to react to being a big brother now.

Wow, it has been a while since my last Artemis Fowl book. I honestly thought I finished this series but I guess I haven't.

The Lost Colony was pretty interesting since it's been a while since I dove into this series. In it, we are still witnessing Artemis and Holly trying to save the world. Yet, at this point they are pretty down about not being super successful. Or successful at all.

It was a lot of fun diving back into this duo. I just love Artemis and Holly working together - they just make me smile. Besides them, we get to meet another lovely genius - Minerva! Now she was a delight and I definitely laughed when her and Artemis were together.

Now that I know that I haven't finished this series.. I am determined to that this month/year. Bring on the next adventure guys!

Artemis Fowl: The Lost Colony is the fifth book in the series, and I personally think that everyone who loves Harry Potter should read these books. Better written and with more intelligent contemplation of elements like magic and technology, this is a series that readers of all ages can enjoy. By book five, we’ve been introduced to a wide and fun cast of characters, and unfortunately had one of our good friends die. There is no over-arcing plot between books, though there are certainly continuing themes and characters, so a reader can pick up the series at any point. I’m a big fan of starting at the beginning, but this is a series that could actually be read from any book.

While I think this book is much more complex and thought-out than many books I’ve read, I did feel that in comparison with the rest of the series, this book just wasn’t as good. I was excited when I got it, drove an hour away to the nearest bookstore to find it, started reading right away, and then I ended up putting it down later that day in favor of watching Veronica Mars . It just didn’t keep my attention like the other books had, and the spot where I drifted away for about two weeks was the same spot that my editor drifted away at too.

Still, if you like the other books, you’ll want to read this one and not give it up. The second half of the book is far more interesting and the ending made me jump up and down with joy for what is being set-up for the next book. It’s kind of nice to have an Artemis Fowl book that I’m sure will have a sequel, since the last few books have ended on more questionable notes. Maybe that was part of the problem with this book, because the last book ended on a note that didn’t *need* a sequel, so this book didn’t have as much of a place to start off from.

it took 5 books (well, 4, if I'm being honest, I liked book 4 too) to find my connection to Artemis Fowl & generally this series
there's a rival now. I like to see more of this character (not just this book)
Hilarious! the sarcastic battles between Artemis, Foaly, Holly & Mulch. poor Butler. & the fun in narrating.

Crikey! How far can Eoin Colfer’s imagination go? Pretty far it seems :O) This fifth instalment is another Crazy adventure, mixing the ‘Mission Impossible’ elements I’ve come to absolutely love - the way Artemis Fowl puts together those plans of his!!! - with time travel! Yep, it is totally mental. Add our beloved characters (with Artemis starting to feel the effects of puberty!), a few new ones (Number One wins my vote) and the whole thing becomes one of the best in the series! So Much Fun! Onwards with book 6 :O)

P.S. I might have to try Colfer’s new novel that just came out...

Fifteen or sixteen years ago, I was reading these to, and with my boys. My middle son was the most enrapt with these Artemis Fowl books. He fancied himself as an semi-evil, kid-genius in-the-making, and Artemis was his prototype. Although he has (mostly) given up on the evil part, he has followed the genius(?) part, and in re-reading these, I find myself nostalgic for those days. In this novel, Artemis and Holly explore a new milieu distinct from the Lower Elements. The Lost Colony involves a distinct realm untethered to time and place complete with a unique population called demons, by some. Colfer has expanded and amplified his bestiary to include demons and demon warlocks along with several new cast members, both villainous and good. But wait, there's more. Not only must Artemis contend with new friends and foes, but now he is beginning to experience the confusing aspects of puberty. He is beginning to experience the chemical imbalances caused by just a cursory glance or an off-handed compliment. Suddenly, the genius aspects of his brain can no longer be trusted, because the neural receptors are drowning in a hormonal soup. This was a strong entry to the series.

I was ecstatic when i bought the new release just last year! Here i thought that there would never be another person who could match artemis fowl and here pops up a Pretty, 12 year old French Prodigy! Who Artemis seems to be really attracted to! I must say that i am very excited for these two geniuses! A girl version of Artemis Fowl named Minerva! what a coincidence in names! The girl seems to be definately artemis' match! Well, Minerva, at this age is just like Artemis when he was 12 years old, always thinking about power and fame.

I pitied Artemis at the end of the story.. because he just missed almost 3 years of his supposed to be life... So... 12+3=15... Minerva and Artemis are supposed to be of the same age now!!!

I am quite positive that they will both work together at the last book! and i am really really excited for it!

“Control puberty?" snorted the bodyguard."If you manage that, you'll be the first.”

This book literally got me cracked up when it comes to the humor of Artemis' stage of growing up xD How smol and so innocent he is back then from the very first book till now the sixth. So memorable to follow up his journey.

“If it looks like a Dwarf, and it smells like a Dwarf, then it's probably a Dwarf or a latrine wearing dungerees.”

Kind of a bit disappointed for not having enough Mulch in this book but surely, introducing new characters, new world to explore of knowing new species -demon is quiet good track for filling the series. I love Number One, he is so lost yet feeling alone despite being rare he still believed he have something so much more and yes, HE DID ! I truly feel him :')))))

“Just what we need," moaned Holly. "Artemis Fowl with magical powers.”

This book got me mind blow with plot twist and each shocking moments of how I am forgetting that Artemis is a real genius on game board. Oh God, he is just so whoa...I LOVE HIM EVEN MORE THROUGHOUT THE SERIES <333

Yeeeaaass and yeaaaaasss the cliffhanger at the end book really got me hyped for the next book !!!!!!

  • Caela Harrison

I like Eoin Colfer - he has some cracking ideas. However, he is one of the laziest writers I've read in a while. His work would be so much better if he spend a little time on it; he has the manner of a 10 year old boy with a brilliant idea, desperate to gush it all out before it's lost.

There is no excuse for a children's book to be shoddy. I'm not ashamed of reading children's books, but I do wish authors would try a little harder. Colfer has a good mind and a great deal of potential to write well... he just seems to choose not to.

  • Olivia-Savannah

I found this to be another great instalment in the series. I want to know how Eoin Colfer manages to come up with these creative heist plots. Because with a new book, comes a new way to slip in a heist that is creative and not previously done in the series.

I loved the new characters we met in this one. I especially loved No1 for his intelligence and for how he was such an underdog but had so much potential within him as well. I also really liked getting to know Minerva! I found it so interesting to see Artemis having someone on his intelligence level that he could parry with. I also, as usual, enjoyed every moment we get to see Butler, Artemis, Holly, Mulch and Foaly.

I was pleasantly surprised to discover that time travel was done well in this book? I love a good time travel narrative but I am so picky and want it to be done well. I would say this book manages to do that! Everything about it is explained clearly enough for us to understand and follow along.

Unlike with some of the other books, I did have some trouble with suspending my belief as much as this book needed me to. I felt this particularly in a chapter at the beginning and a chapter or two at the end. But it didn’t hinder my reading enjoyment much. And I am an adult reading a middle grade book…

The stakes in this series were raised, once again. With every book the author rockets it up a notch. And there was plenty of action unfolding to keep my attention when reading.

The ending was perfect and has me so excited for the next book because we will have more characters at play. They were introduced here and I cannot wait to get to meet them more! And also, regardless of how many characters there are in this series, the author manages to balance them all so well.

I am excited for the sequel!

    این کتاب رو می‌شه یه کتاب مستقل حساب کرد. خط داستانی کاملاً جداست و ایده فوق‌العاده‌ای داره و به پایان هم می‌رسه و نصفه‌نیمه نمی‌مونه و راستش من هیچوقت کتاب فانتزی تک‌جلدی رو دوست نداشتم، ولی این واقعاً خوبه و فکر نمی‌کنم هیچوقت تجسم حلقه‌ی جادوگران به دور آتشفشان از ذهنم پاک بشه. :}

"Artemis Fowl and the Lost Colony" is a great book! If you have read the other books in the series this is a great continuation of them. I think this book is good for many reasons. First of all, it is filled with humorous and witty comments, even in the most dire situations Eoin Colfer finds room to fit them. You will find yourself laughing outloud to yourself when reading. Another great thing about this book is that it takes you on and adventure and it starts off right away, there's no waiting to get to the climax because the whole book is exciting. I also love the characters in this book, you really feel as if you know them and they are each so differents and all very likeable. So if you are looking for a humorous and adventurous story, this would be a great one to check out.

I just loooved the new characters: Doodah and No.1, hope they will stay in future books . I think and hope Minerva will stay as well. The writing keeps getting better and better. It was really engrossing, especially the second part, I just couldn’t stop reading. It was exciting, gripping, thrilling, sad but also funny. Definitely my favorite Artemis Fowl book so far. Can't wait to start the next book in the series!

  • Ghada-NQ

    MY ABSOLUTE FAVORITE SO FAR!!!!!!

  • Niki

By this book, this series has started to feel "stretched".

We have a saying in Greek about this kind of thing, "to pull it by the hair", when a creator decides to keep a series/ a TV show/ etc. going, even though they don't really have the inspiration or will to do so anymore (in this case: "Eoin Colfer is pulling the Artemis Fowl series by the hair!"), so they just introduce increasingly ridiculous plot points. For a prime example of this, see JK Rowling's "The Cursed Child", which is a JOKE. Enough said.

So like I said, this series has begun to be pulled by the hair with the introduction of YET ANOTHER problem that might expose the Fae world to the humans. So many in the approximately 2 years that Artemis has known them. If fae-exposing issues arise so often, how did they deal with them before Artemis, to whom they run asking for help every time? The problem in this book wasn't even caused by him at all, unlike the previous ones.

Also: Holly quit the LEP at the end of the previous book, but is recruited at a very similar service at the beginnng of this book, so basically nothing changed even though her quiting the LEP was a big deal in the previous book.

Hey, all the AF books were written in a very simplitic, dare I say lazy writing style, but this one is the one where the plot got a bit lazy too. I'm kind of attached to the characters now, so I'll finish the series, I want to know how it ends. But let me just say that I've already started the next book and it seems even worse than this one. Sigh.

What's weird is that this was the first of the series I'd unwittingly picked up from the library at a whim– only to devour it in one go and proceed to buy all four preceding books the very next day.

Artemis and Holly are both feeling let down now that they are not saving the world. Artemis decides to try to unravel one of the Faerie secrets about what happened to the lost colony of Demons. When his hunches prove correct, Holly is recruited by a special police force to make contact with Artemis and figure out what he knows.

I love Artemis! Even when he isn't trying to get into trouble, he does. He and Holly make a good team too. We also get some new characters! Minerva is also a teenage genius, and since Artemis is hitting puberty, their interaction is comical. We also get Number One, a demon/wizard who is too smart for his fellow demons and practically banished. I can't wait to see what adventure these characters take in the next book.

Reading too many Eoin Colfer books too close together doesn't seem to help in appreciating them. There's something about the tone and such that just starts to get on my nerves after two or three of his books. Still, Artemis Fowl is still fun, and while this book didn't contain many surprises, I quite liked the new characters, and I'm interested to see what happens in future. Minerva should be interesting, and I hope Number One shows up again. And Doodah, maybe.

Other than that, though, I don't have much to say.
