Probably my favorite of the series. I only wish there was an epilogue. I want to know what happened at Staffa.

SPELLBINDING CONCLUSION TO THE SERIES & MY NEW FAVORITE !!!
    Title: Gavin
    Series: Immortal Highlander
    Author: Hazel Hunter
Designation: Book Five of Series, Full-Length, Can Be Read As Standalone(But so much better when read in sequential order), No Cliffhanger, Medieval Historical/Time Travel/Fantasy Romance
    Reading Platform: Kindle Edition
    My Rating: Five 'OMG-I-Can't-Believe-How-Good-This-Book-Was' Stars*****
**Disclaimer: Although there is an underlying interconnected storyline running throughout the series, each release focuses primarily on one couple finding love and their happy ending. I believe each of the books can still be read as standalones. The author does a fabulous job of giving the reader sufficient backstory, but I highly recommend reading the books in order of their release. It's one decision I'm sure you'll rever regret.

OMG! I loved, loved, loved this book! I know I've said the same thing about every single book in this series but oh my goodness, this one was absolute perfection! I'm fascinated by stories featuring mythology, folklore, and fantasy, adore Time Travel Romance, infatuated with Medieval Historical Fiction, addicted to steamy romance, obsessed with strong, sassy heroines, completely smitten with sexy Scottish Highlanders from any century, and when I can find it all in one great read, I'm in heaven! And that's exactly what Hazel Hunter delivered - AGAIN! Hunter picked up the pace-again, kicked up the heat-again, and doubled the stakes-again in Gavin, the fifth (and I believe final) riveting release in her mega-popular, can't-put-down Immortal Highlander Series! I truly loved this book, now let me tell you why!

Gavin is a captivating, imaginative, unique, fast-paced, exceptionally well-crafted and edited, full-length standalone historical medieval time travel romance with paranormal, supernatural, and fantasy elements and filled to the brim with compelling drama, pulse-pounding danger, edge-of-your-seat action, daring adventure, nail-biting suspense, heart-wrenching angst, steamy passion, and heartwarming romance. The narrative is beautifully written in the third person with multiple perspectives and this story had quite a few. I stopped counting at eight! lol... In some instances, multiple points of view can be somewhat confusing to a reader if not skillfully written, but Hunter does an excellent job, and all the perspectives are clearly discernible. I always enjoy stories written with clearly defined multiple perspectives. It allows me to know the thoughts of all the primary characters, not just the protagonists, and I especially enjoy when we know what's going on in the convoluted minds of the bad guys. I think it adds so much more depth and understanding of the story. The dialogue is smart, engaging, and flows effortlessly. Obviously, Hunter did her research. I found the language and terminology of the era to be articulate, exceptionally well executed and authentic to the era. In other words, Hunter's fourteenth-century characters spoke like fourteenth-century Scottish Highlanders. In reality, none of us would be able to understand an actual fourteenth-century Highlander, but Hunter did make them sound as realistic as possible, which definitely added to my enjoyment of this story, plus she included a handy-dandy glossary of terms in the back of the book. But without a doubt, my favorite element of all Hunter's books is the characters, and this story is no exception. Hunter gives us a large cast of intriguing, engaging, and well-developed characters who literally explode from the pages, grab your imagination, demand your undivided attention, and completely capture your heart. I fell head over heels for the two protagonists, present-day war veteran Gavin McShane and Catriona Haral, fourteenth-century druidess and lone survivor of the Druid Moon Wake Tribe of Everbay Isle. Gavin is the twin brother of Jema McShane and was accidentally transported with his twin sister from a present-day archaeological site in Scotland to the past in Tormod, Book Four of the series. We discovered in Tormod that archaeologist and self-professed ditch digger Jema McShane had Druid blood which gave her certain abilities in the fourteenth century, so it's safe to assume her twin Gavin was also Druid and blessed with some sort of magical ability - and he does, but I don't do spoilers so no hints from me! lol... OMG! I loved these two characters! Don't get me wrong, I've enjoyed all the characters but I became smitten with the handsome, courageous Gavin McShane, veteran and former member of The Black Watch, when he was introduced in Book Four of the series, although I did want to knock him upside the head several times during the course of Jema's story. The beautiful, kindhearted druidess Catriona captured my heart immediately. Cat may not have been a warrior like some of the other women of the series but her love for animals spoke volumes of her kindness and sweet nature, and the revelation of her past just ripped my heart right out of my chest. These two characters were so perfect together and complemented each other brilliantly. After reading Book Four, my heart broke for Gavin and I so hoped he would also find his happy ending - and he did! There wasn't as much humor in this book as the first two of the series, but there's just as much emotion, if not more since this story also includes two time travelers, and I'm not talking about Jema being the second. Oops-slight spoiler! But that's only one of MANY hidden surprises in this story! Heck, I still have whiplash from all the twists and turns in this story, and there were quite a few scenes that just ripped my heart right out of my chest but by the end, I was happy, satisfied, well entertained, and completely smitten with former Black Watch veteran Gavin McShane and lovely druidess Catriona Haral! Actually, this book may be my favorite to date because everything is finally revealed and all the loose threads are finally woven into place. Well, almost all, but still no spoilers from me. Yeah, I know I say the same thing after every book but I can't help it, especially since it's true! lol... I don't really know how to explain it, except to say that this book was so much more - more danger, drama, angst, action, adventure, passion, romance, plus all our favorite characters, and just more everything!

After falling through a time portal from a present-day archaeological site in Scotland to the fourteenth century Highlands, Gavin McShane wants nothing more than to live out his life in peace-alone. He had no intention of trying to return to his life in the future nor allowing his twin sister to know he survived the battle. It was enough that she cared for him while he died a slow agonizing death from ALS. In this time, he was healthy and could look after himself, but more importantly, his sister was in love and happy with her life. After his experience with the Thora the Merciless and the undead Roman legion, Gavin wanted only to be left alone to live out the rest of his days in peace, which is why he chose to build a home on a small deserted island all the locals said was cursed. But Gavin didn't believe in curses so he had nothing to fear from the infamous Blue Lady of Marr that supposedly haunted the island. But what if the lady did exist and what if she wasn't a ghost? Catriona Haral didn't trust the handsome Highlander currently building a cottage near the abandoned village where her entire tribe had been slain. She could never allow anyone to know of her existence and had done everything she could to covertly sabotage his plans, but the hulking beast of a man seemed determined to stay. Unfortunately, her efforts were all for naught and she couldn't seem to stop herself from secretly admiring the man - until she was caught and could no longer deny the attraction she felt for the strange man who somehow seemed so familiar. But what will fate have in store for Gavin and Catriona? We'll see!

Did I like this book? No, I loved it! I was glued to my seat, white knuckling my ereader, completely captivated with my heart fluttering wildly in my chest as the time flew as quickly as the pages! I could not stop reading! I'm totally smitten with this entire series and can hardly wait to see what Hunter has in store for her readers next! Would I recommend it? You bet and I a but only for adult readers since it does contain several explicit love scenes! If you enjoy well-written medieval historical tales with supernatural elements, and liberally seasoned with time travel, action adventure, danger, drama, passion, and romance, then this book is screaming your name! And if you loved the movie and series Highlander, this story will, most likely, tickle your fancy! Will I read this author again? Absolutely! And finally, was I entertained? Completely! Fabulous entertainment and an awesome read! Well done, Hazel Hunter! Well done, indeed! I have no idea how Hunter will top this book, but I have every confidence she will!!!

    (Immortal Highlander, #5)

Gavin McShane may be happy for his sister and her new life, but his is not so great. He's trying to recover from his lover's betrayal and finds peace for himself by being a fisherman in the Orkneys. He lives on a tiny Island and finds relief in his seclusion until one day he meets the much talked about ghostly Blue Lady of Marr that everyone is afraid of.

Catriona Haral is no phantom. She is a young druidess who has been hiding her existence ever since her tribe was wiped out by the Roman Legion. At first she's in shock when Gavin wanders into her secret glen as only druid kind are able to pass through the spelled wall and into the old village. Then she ends up wondering if he is the reason she wants to live again.

Catriona wasn't just hiding on a whim. When her reasons are revealed, the might of the McDonnel clan and the judgement of the druids will land at her doorstep. Can she truly be honest with Gavin and build a life with him and can Gavin be honest with Cat and tell her where he comes from? Will the McDonnel clan and the druids be able to do what most be done and destroy the ninth legion before they destroy all of human, immortal, and druid kind?

Wow there are so many good things I can say about this book. Hazel Hunter is a fantastic author who knows just what we her fans need to read. This book has so many unexpected twists and turns I couldn't believe what I was reading. It was incredible and I would certainly like to read more if Ms. Hunter decides to write another book in this series.

Gavin was the first male who time traveled to medieval Scotland in the series. We met him in the previous book when he fell into the past with his twin sister but they were separated.

It has been a year since he was presumed dead by his twin and betrayed by the woman he loved. He just wants to live away from people and heal his heart. He works on a fishing boat. On his free time, he works on his cottage that he is building on a small island that his fellow fishermen say is haunted by the Blue Lady of Marr. They say her village was massacred by the undead so she seeks revenge. Gavin dismisses their stories as superstition.

I liked the story but thought it was slow at times. The background stories about the troubles within the undead ranks was interesting. I wonder if that story will continue into the next book? I noticed that the next book is called Brennus, Immortal Highlander, Clan Scaraven Book #1. I'm not even sure if we will be seeing any of the other characters or if this is a whole different series. I probably could look it up but why ruin the surprise?

Why should it always be the girls that time travel and meet the people with the superpowers? This one tells the story of a guy meeting one of the Druids. Quite a good read and slightly different .

I really loved this last episode of the druids, Pritani, and Vikings from the Orkney Islands, and in particular the Island of Marr/Everbay. What I found equally impressive as the story was all the research that Hazel Hunter performed to give us a real flavor of the 14th century and life in that time.

Gavin McShane was proud to be a member of the Blackwatch soldiers of 21st century Scotland, until he discovered that he had rapidly progressing ALS. He was dying and spent as much time with his twin sister as possible of his last days. His sister, Jemma is an archeologist working on an exciting Viking find and brings her brother out to the site to have him near and to share in her excitement. As Gavin leans over the pit where Jemma is excavating, he tumbles into it and together the two of them are transported back to 14th century Skye. I really loved this last episode of the druids, Pritani, and Vikings from the Orkney Islands, and in particular the Island of Marr/Everbay.

In this book, we find Gavin still suffering from the betrayal of his lover, Thora. Although his body is now fully healed, he remains depressed and wishing to isolate himself. He takes a job as a fisherman and their luck is usually good, or perhaps it is the skill of his fellow fishermen. He is putting aside money to build a cottage on the uninhabited island of Marr. His fellow fishermen tell him the island is cursed ever since the original inhabitants were all massacred. All that is left is the Blue Lady Ghost of Marr seen in a tattered blue dress on rare occasions. As Gavin does not believe in ghosts, on his next days off, he begins to build his cottage.

The 'ghost' is actually Catriona Haral, the only survivor of the massacre. She has been tending the graves and the homes of those who once lived in the village, all druids, like her. One of her special talents is the ability to communicate to some degree with the animals around her. She has also planted the whole village glen with masses of flowers and herbs. When Gavin appears on her island, formerly known as Everbay, she does not want him there. But she decides to watch and see if she can tell if he is dangerous. When he is able to cross the warded barrier placed there by the lead druid who came to pray and bury the dead 20 years ago, she knows well, that he too, must be druid.

So now, I introduced you to our hero and heroine, but there is a great many plots and subplots to this story before we get to the end. Treachery, lies, black magic, more than a few traitors, and of course the men and women of Dun Aran.
There is the mystery of completing the circle, both of people and time. A wonderful complex story to enjoy more than once. I agree with many who said that this was the best of the Immortal Highlanders. If you have not read them all, at least read Tormod first. That is the story of Jemma and the beginning of Jemma and Gavin's time in the 14th century.
    5 well-deserved stars!!

Unlike his twin Jema, Gavin McShane has been struggling since he landed in medieval Scottland. Gavin has been enthralled by Fenella, used and betrayed by Thora, left for dead, and on his own. Not one to be bested by his fate, Gavin strives to make a home for himself in this new world by building the ultimate bachelors pad on the island of Marr which is said to be cursed and haunted by the Blue Lady of Marr.

Catriona Haral is the last of her tribe and has been hiding out on Marr for the last twenty years until her uninvited island-mate, Gavin, moves in believing he is the island's only human inhabitant. Cat keeps her distance and observes Gavin from her hidden glen, but eventually, Gavin realizes that he is not alone and tries to engage Cat in conversation. Much to her annoyance, Cat finds herself attracted to Gavin.

The first time Gavin lays eyes on Cat, he is blown away by her beauty and instantly attracted. However, after two strikes with first Fenella and then Thora, Gavin is cautious and needs time to heal. The two become friends as Cat teaches Gavin how to survive on the island. As soon as Cat and Gavin take their relationship to the next level, trouble rears up for both when the Ninth Legion who are responsible for her tribe's demise return to the island with her familial nemesis for a showdown.

Cailean Lusk has to come clean with his master, Bhaltair Flen, as well as the McDonnel clan although Lachlan and Kinley already have their suspicions. The druids and highlanders band together again against their common undead enemy led by Tribune Quintus Seneca. Unfortunately for the Ninth, there is dissension in the ranks, and new factions formed that could lead to the Ninth's demise.

Gavin effectively ends the Immortal Highlander Series with a few twists, turns, and surprises to keep you reading well into the night. The glossary is much appreciated if your medieval brogue is a bit rusty!

    The Immortal Highlander Series

I have not been as captured by a series since Karen Marie Moning's Fever Series. I've never been a fan of time travel books, but Hazel Hunter's creativity and imagination is surprisingly refreshing and does not fall into the confusing trap that time travel stories can when the author is a bit overzealous. Hunter has created an incredible world, memorable characters pitting an undead legion up against a highland clan that never surrenders. There is some redundancy in the series but overall an excellent read. A 5-star series I recommend.

    Gavin and Catriona

I put off reading this book for a little bit because I knew that it was the last book in this series and I didn't want it to end yet. But alas, I couldn't wait anymore. It was a great as I thought it would be.
Gavin hasn't seen his twin Jemma in a year. He has worked on a fishing boat and started building a house on the Isle of Marr also known as Everbay. He thinks Jemma didn't even look for him and hoped that he was dead. The other fishermen told Gavin that there is a ghost on Everbay haunting it until she gets revenge for the slaughter of her tribe.
Catriona goes to the Isle yearly to plant flowers and visit the graves of her family and tribe that we killed by blood drinkers thanks to her uncle. People on the main land think she is a ghost because druid magic encircles the village and no one can enter unless they have druid blood. So they only see a glimpse of her then she disappears behind the barrier mist. Catriona also uses a oak tree portal that was planted by her tribe to travel away and hide from her uncle.
The rest of the immortal Highlanders and the undead are part of this story. We learn what the plans of the concave of druids of Balthair and Lusk were. It ended in a HEA of two groups of druids as well as the Highlanders and the people from the future.
There is still a question of the undead prostitutes though, so I wonder if they are going to be part of the new series mentioned at the back of the book. I guess I will have to wait and see.
This whole series is absolutely wonderful. I recommend it to anyone who likes Highlanders, time travel, magic or the undead. Keep up the great writing, I love the longer books too!

  • Elodie’s Reading Corner

I’m glad I had only few days to wait before reading the last installment in The Immortal Highlanders series, as I read the fourth first books in less than a week.
I’m sad to say goodbye to everyone as they became quite a group of friends, but the ending was satisfying and as the author pointed it, it can become boring for her to write only about one storyline and exhausting for the readers to follow when too many sequels.
The storyline is told like the previous books from different points of view, which gives us a very wide perspective of the plot.
This book can be read as a standalone, the author gives us enough background to understand the outline of the plot.
I was not sure I would like Gavin as his lack of questioning in the light of Thora purposes and his jealousy of his twin’s sister happiness didn’t helped me to warm up a lot for him in Tormod.
But here, we have a wounded man, trying to heal from his past and his mistakes.
He has turned in a nice man, alone but kind, always ready to help if needed, learning his way in this century far away from his.
Catriona appears at first as a mystery, but her story is slowly unraveled along the storyline.
She is perfect match for Gavin, and soon they both learn from each other.
This book sees also the end of the undead army as it was known, even if few things are left unanswered.
Whatever, I liked this book, all the previous characters are back and the author gives us a good closure for this series.
Now I’m very curious about her new series to come, The Skaraven.

  • Llaph

I really liked this book. It was different from the previous books as the person who came back in time was a guy--the twin of a previous heroine. This book still had a lot of what I enjoyed about the previous books. The writing went smoothly, it was exciting at times, romantic, and full of the unique and interesting lore Hunter had crafted for her druids.
Another thing I adore about the books in this series is the authentication she adds to it by introducing facts and words that would be known during the time period. I've read a lot of time travel books and this series by far does a great job at immersing you into the time period and not jolting you out of it by including stuff that wouldn't be there.
I don’t want to give anything away, but the whole story about the island and the tribe who lived there was great. I really liked the peak into what happens to those who go against the code—so to speak. There was a stronger glimpse into what the ultimate plan of the druids was—I was pretty surprised by it and by Cat’s alter-ego. (That would be a spoiler so that’s all I’m saying on that.) I was eagerly awaiting Gavin’s book and was not let down by this story. I was hoping for a little bit more action—but I’m a little blood thirsty that way.
I’m curious to see what she does with the Romans after the ending in this book….
I’d highly recommend this entire series if you like a good time travel romance with a nifty dose of unique lore to it.

More 4.5/5. Great finish to the series. Although, there may be a door open for more in the future. Well edited.

Gavin is trying to move on with his life after thinking his twin has abandoned him for dead. He is building a home on a deserted island that is said to be haunted. In reality, it is occasionally visited by a former resident, Catriona. Cat's entire village was wiped out by her uncle and the undead when she was a child. Gavin and Cat meet and begin a friendship. She helps him learn about what is safe to eat, how to build items needed for his home, and new places on the island. Slowly their feelings turn more amorous. Meanwhile, Lachlan and Kinley become aware that Gavin is not dead and that he is hanging out with an unknown druidess. Cat's uncle is done with his misdeeds and the undead play a role in his plans. Will everyone survive the confrontation? Will Gavin get to reunite with Jema? Will everyone get their HEA?

This was more of a sweet building of romance between Gavin and Cat. Evander's story evoked much more emotion and Tormod's story more intense action and sacrifice. I definitely liked Gavin, but felt like maybe this one ran out of a little steam. Still a few loose ends - especially as the undead are not totally wiped out. All in all though, a satisfying read. Enjoy.

    >Book Review – Gavin
    >I am an independent reviewer. This is the 5th and last book in the Immortal Highlander series and ends in an HEA. Gavin’s story continues. He is bitter over being duped by Thora and left behind by his sister. He moves to a deserted island to heal and forget. This island has a druid secretly living on it, though. Catriona is the last of her family. She is hiding from her evil uncle. The real twist is where exactly she is hiding.
    >Watching Gavin and Cat learn to trust each other was so fun. Both Cat and Gavin are druids, but able to reproduce. The ultimate battle of the undead is fought and is a real page turner. All of the previous characters are present to help and Gavin learns to forgive. The weird reincarnation of druids cause Cat and Gavin to raise hundreds of druid children, which is interesting.
    > This book is appropriate for an adult audience. I am giving this book 5 stars. The series was super fun and romantic with a lot of action.

  • Susan

Gavin is the fifth and final book in the series Immortal Highlander and is a full length novel. This is can be read as a standalone, but Gavin's story starts in Tormod so you should read that book first. There is violence and hot steamy sex scenes so 18+.

The book blurb adequately describes the storyline so I'm not going to repeat that all of that info here. The author did a great job of describing the setting and the main characters. There are a lot of clues in the storyline that keep you guessing what twists and turns will be revealed next. It definitely kept me reading. This series was a different take on immortals and vampires and is worth reading. And Gavin was a good end to the series.

  • Pam Louis

Gavin is from the twenty-first century he had been dieing when a viking goddess brought him and his twin sister back in time to fourteenth century Scotland healed and with gifts.
Catriona is a druid who lost all her family and tribe on the island called everbay. Every year she comes back to look after the animals and morn the loss. This time she finds Gavin building a home on the island.
Oh wow amazing twists and turns to this story all the way to the end! Great characters, mystery, danger, action, drama, hot scotts, time travel and vampires you count not ask for more. This is a must read and should be turned into a TV show or movie but more then likely they wouldn't do it justice lol
Voluntarily reviewed a copy and I honestly loved it.

  • Jan Janus

I voluntarily received an ARC copy of this book for review and here it is: This is by far the best book in the entire series of the Highlanders. Gavin as you know is Jemma's twin brother that came through the stones with her in the last book, however; they all thought he was dead because he wasn't seen once he fell into the ocean. I'm not one for spoilers but I will tell you, the elation I felt throughout this entire book was remarkable. The Characters, the twist, the action, the list goes on and one. If you have not read this series I highly recommend you do. It is set in a time where the future meets the present or shall I say some past meets the future. Exhilarating :-)

    Magical!

After reading Books 1-5 of Immortal Highlander -A. Scottish Time Travel Series, I have enjoyed the complex characters in each book. I have always enjoyed time travel romance when soul mates are united through portals of time . Each of these books have page turning suspense with some of the same characters in each book. I recommend reading these books in sequence for the most enjoyment. Not recommended for young readers due to some explicit sexual content in each book.. Hazel Hunter has a wonderful gift for writing romantic suspense with a lot of magical storylines!

  • Tanielle

    Bit confusing…
This was one kind of confusing during the last couple chapters. The relationships of who belonged to who really though me off because I thought the Ovate only had Kinley but then the baby was added in and I’m guessing Cat. We don’t get what happens with the Legion or what his goal really was, or if Bryn took over. I was glad someone had a baby then with all the kids coming back that was great but still unsure what the plan was as far as them having kids with mortals. I’m guessing it didn’t work because the women came back, or did it work because they technically we’re reborn? Confusing towards the end.

  • Vivian Chrisman

I'm so happy that Gavin got his own story but also sad that it ends this series. I fell in love with Gavin in Jema's story and wanted a HEA for him as well as his twin sister. Catriona was perfect for him whether in the past or present. I'm not going to explain that little time travel twist- you'll have to read to find out on your own. So happy that the "Blue Lady of Marr" was able to tame the "Beast" and that everything came full circle. Again. read to understand.

*I received an Advance Reader's Copy of this book which I am voluntarily reviewing*

  • Laura Simmons

This final book in the Immortal Highlander Series was excellent. Although it seemed a bit slower in the beginning than the previous four, it was interesting enough to keep my attention. Gavin and Catriona were wonderful together and like a previous reviewer mentioned, it is rare to read a time travel book where the man travels through time instead of the woman. Gavin easily adapted to the Medieval lifestyle due to his military survival training. All of the characters were well done and I feel sad that this series has ended. I loved each of these exciting tales.

  • Shana Pare

    Sweet ending

So ends this portion of the Immortal Highlander series. Gavin and Jema, his twin sister, (book 4) have their own new lives in ancient Scotland. Gavin finds his healing and knows where his place in life will be.

This entire series has been about love, redemption, honor and friendship. I really can't think of many better things to set one's imagination free. Can you?

  • Daniela

  • Karen Fisher

This book was amazing. I loved it. Gavin had adapted to his new time. Hunting for a private place o settle. His uninhabited island wasn't so uninhabited. But is it really haunted as everyone believes? Catriona certainly wants him to believe so. This tale brings her full circle. Finally able to get justice and laying ghosts to rest.

  • Linda Levine

I enjoyed the story. Gavin is trying to do something with his life and thinks he is alone until he discovers Catriona on the island. Their relationship develops and becomes very strong. They face some real danger. It is a great mix of adventure and romance.

I am voluntarily reviewing a copy I received.
