An early, light gesture towards cyberpunk in a body-horror-heavy New Wave package, that's also a bit of a "Beauty and the Beast" tale from the Beast's perspective. To avert world war and achieve "the survival of our species," the American government cyborg's a man to make him able to survive natively on Mars, including integrating a computer into his brain to help him make sense of his powerful new senses and reflexes. Who exactly is doing this and exactly why is left for an interesting twist at the end.Though much of the book focuses on what it would actually feel like to have every single part of your body replaced with synthetics, we also get a tremendous amount of marital discord. Many main plot elements hinge on whether or not the Man Plus's wife still loves him or not, and whether anyone could love him.All in all, not what I expected, in a good way.
