Lets Play Reviews

Let’s play is my all time favorite webtoon, beating true beauty by a hair. I can’t wait for the new installments, but every creator deserves a good break so I’ll wait patiently
-
Another day, another white woman who thinks her feelings are more important than those of an entire marginalized community. Is it really that hard for white authors to admit they don't know how to write good representation and to take advice from marginalized communities?
To say I’m disappointed is an understatement. Furious, saddened, and disgusted are a few other words I’d use. This used to be my favorite webcomic. I used to admire the author, but definitely not anymore.
I will never support someone who so easily dismisses the Asian community when they tell you something is problematic. I will never give my money to a white woman who prioritizes her own feelings and maliciously sends her entire fan base to harass and dismiss Asian readers who expressed concern about your representation. Your diversity in this comic means nothing if you aren’t willing to accept criticism and discuss with BIPOC voices. Disgusting and despicable behavior from a white author. I don't expect people to be perfect, especially as a white person - I understand the self reflection and education it takes to unlearn many of the things that are ingrained in us from a young age. But if you make it to 40 years old, and your reaction to a marginalized group critiquing the way you are portraying race in your work, is to become defensive, malicious and not engage at all, then you aren't even trying to be a better white person.
For context on what happened months ago now:
Someone asked Mongie in her discord server if Vikki was Korean or Chinese because her last name is Song and she’s been drawn wearing a qipao which can belong to either Chinese or Korean culture. Mongie responded that “she’d rather not say because then she could be either and it’s ‘more inclusive’”. Some fans very kindly explained how this is problematic because it feeds into the “all Asians look and are the same” stereotype that’s really harmful in media. Mongie got extremely defensive. Went on to say that Vikki had the last name Song because she wanted a “hippy tree loving sounding name” and she had always wanted to draw a qipao and “Vikki was the only person she could draw it on without being cultural appropriation”.
So not only was nothing about Vikkis character design meant to be a certain ethnicity, she put absolutely zero thought into her characters race and wanted to leave it ambiguous so it was “up to the reader to decide what Asian ethnicity she was”. Then Mongie went on to say that she would never address her characters race again. When some fans posted about it on Twitter (without even using her name or the name of the comic) she somehow found the tweet and posted screenshots in her server and tagged the 10k people in there to come defend her, because “people were trying to get let’s play shut down over a race conversation”. Well all these fans come in talking about hunting down the people complaining and threatening them (it was disturbing). This was all a-okay with Mongie who let this all happen, and eventually admitted in a private DM to the persons tweet she shared that she did it as an act of revenge. Which I can’t even get in to how absolutely FUCKED UP that is when you have a massive platform, and part of your story is literally about how you can cause harm on the internet when you have a large platform (Marshall’s review of Sam’s game that got her a lot of hate). She then shut down her discord and deleted all her messages. Never fully apologized or recognized she did anything wrong, and honestly that was the final straw for me. If you want representation in your comic then either do it right or don’t bother. Attacking fans for criticism about your shitty representation makes you look 10000x worse.
Unfortunately, this incident isn't the only time she's had poor representation, and was ignorant about race. Her latino character, Dean, was heavily criticized for being a walking Latin stereotype (I mean, the guy had rose petals fall from the sky when he was introduced), and her reaction was again to get defensive and then say "well I'm just not going to have him in the comic much anymore". It's so childish, and so white to respond like that to genuine criticism.
She fetishizes the shit out of Marshall, a half Japanese character (although his family is from Okinawa, and Mongie apparently doesn't understand the difference and just uses it interchangeably). She would go on and on about how big his wang is in the discord server. And would write about him using a "deep and sexy samurai like voice" while talking Japanese during sex. 😬 What does that even MEAN? Do y'all remember that scene after him and Monica hook up for the first time and he asked why she picked him at the bar, and she says "You looked like a J-pop star" and he goes "Yes Japanese ancestors helping me get laid!" with the Japan flag in the background? C R I N G E
I won't even get into how she consistently called Abe, the sole Black male character in the comic, My Nubian God. Like would repeatedly be "possessive" of him and say "he's all mine, he belongs to me" and refer to him as her "Nubian God". That is some weird fucking behavior man. I wouldn't even know where to start with that one.
I also want to mention that she claims she has LGBTQ rep in her comic, but literally never mentions anyone being queer except OUTSIDE the comic on her private server. That IS NOT representation. If no one knows a character is queer, and you don’t actually make it part of the story, you’re just performative af. Also saying the main male lead would “sleep with men but would NEVER date one” SCREAMS “internalized homophobia” but you do you, Mongie.
I’m not usually one to hope people get cancelled, but I do hope she is forced to face this and take accountability. When you have a massive fanbase, and an influence over how people view the cultures you're portraying, you are responsible for making sure that representation and portrayal is accurate and meaningful. If you can’t do that then just make your work solely about white people so you can avoid causing marginalized communities harm. -
THIS HAD ME SQUEALIN Y’ALL I LOVE IT
-
I wanted to like it but it does so many things that drive me up the walls. The usual “girl unaware she’s attractive trope”, giving people traumas so they’re more endearing to other characters, conflicting treatment of female characters that screams internalized sexism/slut shaming that tries to justify itself but really digs itself deeper. There’s better romance comics on the app that are more consistent with their writing and don’t toss stuff in for essentially shock value.

There are so many good things to say about this comic that I don't even know where to start. The diverse/lgbtq/disability rep, the mental health awareness, the relatable MC who suffers from anxiety, the gamer battling depression, the many amazing representations of women dealing with issues like aging, healing oneself from trauma, normalizing women who watch porn and play games and are strong in their own ways, constantly breaking gender expectations-
Oh the list goes on. And the comic is still ongoing so I highly recommend starting it ;)
Season one just ended so I figured I'd gather my thoughts while waiting for more to come <3 -
idk why i like this so much but i DO
its cute and funny -
This is a very funny, romantic and significant webcomic. Highly recommended ❤️❤️❤️

Hands down to Mongié for giving birth to a webtoon so beautiful, it watered all the crops, my skin is cleared, my depression is cured, my wig is snatched, my mind is blown and my hands are thrown.
Full review to follow after the webtoon is finished. -
Took me a little while to really get into it, but once I did I really liked it! Beautiful art.
-
Relatable, and I love it!!! The art is gorgeous

Really enjoying each character's respective growth and art. Definitely not predictable on the pairings -
What should I say. I had just started to read webtoons as I was curious to see. Then it hooked me up totally. Refreshing story, amazing narrating style. I love how the writer portrays mental health issues like anxiety, depression, rage, trauma, childhood issues in the characters. So yup I'm going to read the season 2 ofcourse. Let's see where's it heading.
-
I read the first 10 chapters on webtoons and really liked it! I have found out webtoons recently and quality of graphics is amazing in all of the comics. If you like to read comics, you might want to give it a try.

“i like being pushed until i’m about to break.” ✨
-
This webcomic has spoke to my soul so many times. I don't play video games at all but I relate to Sam so much and I love her and all these characters because they are all amazing.
-
i just binged two seasons today, and i hope the hiatus ends soon!
-
so far
-
All the characters are amazing and I want more Sam and Charles content😭
-
A delightful webcomic focusing on character development and relationships. Tons of fun nods to gamers, excellent mental health and feminist rep and sweet sweet cinnamon rolls all over.
I might have overdone it but a couple of the final 10 episodes made me a bit teary bc the supporting characters are so so well done with their own backstories. So many to crush on & root for
And like, I don't talk about art bc I can't draw, so I'll say I like it. -
an update now would be great, that's my speech done thanks for listening -
Although it's not over yet, this is one of my favourite series on WebToon and I will continue to read it! It's awesome!
-
Waitingggg for the next season!

The amount of disappointment I feel for this webtoon is astronomical. It's my fault I put big expectations on these stories after reading 10 chapters. But, still. It had the potential to be one of my favorite comics from this app, but it all went downhill.
The idea behind this story is truly great and refreshing. The main character is lovable and extremely relatable to me. What I generally dislike in comics and mangas is having too many love interests. This one is a great example.
So, get this. She is super insecure about herself and a shy introvert. She never had a boyfriend and spends her time making indie games. I love that, honestly. But suddenly this very famous YouTuber plays her game and bashes it for good, which results in his fans spamming her game with bad ratings. He then moves into the apartment next to hers. She dislikes him because she obviously recognizes him but he is oblivious. Do you now see the potential this had? I am not saying the author should have given him this huge change of his character, but the way it started the readers have every right to assume this story is about their lives and how their relationship progresses. But, nope.
Suddenly she has this best friend who is in love with her, then her dad makes her work at his company where she meets another very attractive guy and the YouTube guy that we thought would be the main love interest is off the market. What was the point?
Again, another webtoon that had so much potential wasted. I have no idea where the story moved on from chapter 86 or so, just because I lost interest. -
I’m obsessed with this webcomic (and Link... and Charles...)
-
sam and charles are not good together also charles is a creep 😭
-
-
i read this SUPER FAST! i can’t get it enough………. please please please i want her to end up with charles 😭😭😭
-
Literally, read this one up until all the released 57 episodes as of 24/12/2018 in a day. When I started this, I thought this would be all fun and cute, which it is, but it is so much more as well. This is my first time reading a comic and I absolutely LOVE this form of story consumption as well.
There's something special about the way in which all the emotions (via Emote-Kuns) of Sam, Marshall and Angela and their individual struggles with it has been depicted. From someone who relates to some of those emotions, the depiction really helps compartmentalize my own emotions and struggles.
Of the total 57 episodes released so far, there has been no real progress in terms of romance and it's commendable how the story is captivating without the influence of romance. This should be read for the quirkiness with which the story is communicated via the comic. This is a very cleverly written/drawn comic and worth a read for the utter joy the reader feels while consuming this oh-so-cute content.
