Would have liked to have been warned about the heavy Christianity stuff in the book.
I did not finish it, but that's REALLY off-putting for me, and I think if authors are going to warn about sexual content, they should also warn if they're going to go all church-y on me too. -
I could not put this book down. That is saying a lot considering that I don’t normally read paranormal romance or paranormal anything for that matter. But Carrie Butler’s debut novel is brilliant, riveting, imaginative and seamlessly written.
Rena Collins is an average college student, albeit quite a bit spunkier than most young women. When she meets Wallace Blake, a reclusive and mysterious suitemate of one of her best friends, sparks fly. She and Wallace get to know each other, scrupulously avoiding the subject of their attraction for each other until Rena delves too far into Wallace’s family life and finds herself an unwitting pawn in a dangerous game. Turns out Wallace comes from a long line of supernatural beings with varying powers. As the title of this book implies, strength is Wallace’s power. There is conflict brewing among Wallace’s kind and Rena has just walked right smack into the middle of it. In an effort to protect her, both from his own superhuman strength and from the race of warring supernatural beings, Wallace pushes her away and tries to deny the romantic feelings that have developed between them. But there is no stopping this kind of bond. They have to stand together against the impending peril—come what may.
What Butler does perfectly in this book is subtlety, sexual tension and voice. The narrative doesn’t hit you over the head with the paranormal element. Butler works up to it, lending it credibility and making it all seem feasible while laying the groundwork for Wallace and Rena’s relationship. The tension between these two is palpable. You won’t be able to get enough. You’ll be racing through the pages wanting more. As things grow more heated between them, you’ll be on the edge of your seat, salivating and then when the majority of the paranormal elements come into play, it is like an explosion of awesomeness. You’re so invested in the characters by that point that the paranormal element just makes both them and the story itself a million times richer and more satisfying. Also, in terms of paranormal elements, I love what Butler has done here. I don’t want to give too much away but for me, the paranormal elements in this book were fascinating and original. So much more interesting and engaging than vampires and werewolves. She doesn’t overdo it and I think that’s what makes this book truly great.
I mentioned voice in the last paragraph as one of the things that Butler does perfectly in this book and what I mean by that is that Rena’s voice is excellent. She is warm and feisty, caring and inquisitive and downright hilarious. I laughed out loud several times while reading this book. Again, Rena’s down-to-earth voice lends credibility to the narrative and I think because of that and Butler’s mastery of the art of subtlety, this book will appeal to a very wide variety of readers—including readers who don’t normally enjoy this type of book. It has been an incredibly long time since I read a book that thrilled me, fascinated me, made me laugh, made me cheer and made me all warm and fuzzy—all in one fabulous package. Read this book. It has it all. It is flawless in its execution and you won’t be sorry! -

I had gotten myself into a New Adult book funk and was looking for something different. I had Strength on my reader for a while and decided it was time to give it a try and I’m so glad I did. I absolutely loved it!!! Even though it still falls into the New Adult genres it had a paranormal twist to it. That twist is exactly what I needed to pull me out of my reading funk.
Strength is told from the point of view of Rena Collins, feisty, strong, independent college junior. I loved Rena, she wasn’t whinny or indecisive, she had her values, she stood by her friends and did her best not to judge a person based on rumors. Wallace Blake aka “the madman” of Wilcox College, the name he received because of the tortured sounds that come out of his room every night. Rena and Wallace literally run right into each other, leaving Rena scared, nervous and bruised. When Wallace apologizes for the bruises he left on Rena during their accidental run, she sees the sincerity in him and that he is sad and angry with himself over hurting her. Needing to know how a simple run in could leave bruises on her body and wanting to make sure Wallace is okay while those awful noises are coming from his room, Rena sets out to find out the truth about the madman of Wilcox College.
I completely fell in love with Wallace; he was big and extremely strong but such a softy on the inside. All he wanted was a normal life like everyone else at school but was out casted because of rumors. He is so sweet and kind and gently to Rena while they become friends.
Carrie Butler does a great job mixing suspense, mystery, drama and romance. Once I started Strength I couldn’t put it down, I had to keep going to the next chapter to find out what was going to happen next. Once I was done with Strength I picked Courage up right away and I loved that just as much. Mark of Nexus is a great paranormal NA series. I’m completely hooked!

****This book was part of a blog tour, I received a copy for my honest review****
I have to start by saying from the front cover, I was expecting a totally different sort of book, maybe more romance and passion than mystery .
The beginning of this book starts out exactly like the blurb says, with Rena bumping head first into the chest of outcast and all round mysterious character, Wallace. I must admit with all the nighttime going's on in his room I was thinking this book was going to take a completely different paranormal path, but I was pleasantly surprised. Through Rena's sleuthing, trying to get to the bottom of the puzzle that is Wallace, she finds herself unexplainable drawn to him. The more she digs, the more questions she has.... and meeting Wallace's family doesn't help matters, if anything it causes more trouble.
My favorite part about this book was Rena, I am a sucker for dry humor and wit and she had it in spades. She made the bits that could have dragged in this book funny and entertaining. It was well written, however, I didn't have any heart pounding moments and the actual bad guys at the end seemed a little anti climatic. I mean they were bad, but then were they? You will understand when you read the book, as I don't want to give to much away, but everyone else seemed to feel differently about the circumstances than Rena. Me and Rena were on the same page and freaking out a bit about the future.
Although the cover makes this book look rather raunchy, I will say that this is definitely a Young adult/ new adult book. Nothing really bad in the story that couldn't be read by a younger reader, so don't let the cover fool you.
It will be interesting to see where this paranormal series goes. The powers they have and the development of the nexus bond between Wallace and Rena, has pricked my interest. It was an original concept and as I stated at beginning of this review it was a pleasant surprise to have. I will look for the next book. -
It's official. I have a new book boyfriend. I'm officially claiming him in public. I'm in love with Wallace.
This book jumped off the computer screen at me the first time I read the description. I'll admit that I had a few reservations because while I knew it was paranormal, I wasn't sure what kind of paranormal it was. I was expecting werewolves or some other kind of shape shifter but I was pleasantly surprised.
This book held my interest from the first page and I didn't want to put it down. And when I did have to because life intruded on my reading time, I was counting down the interminable minutes until I could go back to Wallace and Rena. I honestly loved every moment of this book. I loved the chemistry between Rena and Wallace.
My least favorite aspect of the book was Cole. When he was first introduced, I was intrigued. Then I came to hate him. I wanted to throw him off a cliff, onto some very sharp rocks below. But he slowly grew on me. I can't say I loved him, but we came to an (uneasy) coexistence.
This is part of a series, but this book has a definite ending. THERE ARE NO CLIFFS. I definitely can't wait to read the next book in the series, and Carrie Butler definitely has a new fan!

I thought Strength was a great New Adult book and I loved the paranormal twist to it. It was different to other books of this genre that I have read and I loved that about it. The characters are great, the romance is sweet whilst also being incredibly steamy and the background to the story is very interesting.
Rena is such a fiery, powerful character. Although she doesn’t possess any powers, her emotional strength and unwillingness to give up makes her very special. Not many people would be able to remain as strong as Rena does during the things she goes through nor would they try to fight people that basically have super powers.
Wallace is another amazing character; sexy, smart and a social outcast due to being misunderstood (yes you heard me right; this is an NA book where the guy ISN’T a popular bad boy who sleeps around all the time). He is also mysterious and secretive with a dark past. Together Wallace and Rena make a couple that you just really want to be together and you root for their relationship.
There are some very interesting secondary characters that I really want to read more about especially Cole. I detested him to start but I did grow to like him slightly and there seems to be lots of depth to his personality.
I really loved the second half of the book as this is where the paranormal aspects starts to come into play and the action really gets going. The heat between the two main characters also becomes scorching. The sex scenes, well, almost-sex scenes, sizzle with lots of passion and sexual tension.
I can’t wait to see what happens next for Wallace, Rena and all the other characters in the next book in the series. After how the book ended I can’t wait for more and I am also looking forwards to finding out more about the Dynari. This is a book I would definitely recommend and I think everyone should mark their calendars for its release in March.
*I received an e-arc copy of this book in exchange for an honest review, this has not affected my opinions of the book in any way” -
This first novel of the Mark of Nexus series was a refreshingly different story, and I really enjoyed it. The characters weren't predictable, the plot twists kept me guessing, and there was a steamy romance building that had me swooning!
Sassy Rena Collins had far more bravery than her small frame would imply, and I loved what a little spitfire she was. When Wallace crashed into her life, it opened her eyes not only to this strange world of the Dynari, but also to her own faults. This man is one sexy enigma, and the mystery surrounding him catches the reader the moment he enters the story. Rumors about the strange noises coming from his dorm room left everyone assuming the worst, but the more Rena saw of him the more she couldn't stay away. He had this brooding, sweet sexiness that drew her (okay, and me!) to him like a magnet. My heart broke for the pain he had to endure and the lonely life he'd lived, but here's hoping Rena will be the answer to all his problems as this series goes on!
The setup for this story is unique in that it reads like a NA novel until Wallace's secrets are revealed, at which point it shifts to an intense paranormal romance. This is also when their relationship shifts from guarded attraction to lustful passion, and I loved seeing Wallace finally give in to the idea of letting himself be happy with Rena. The build-up made their moment much more meaningful and deliciously steamy, and I loved what it meant for them. The chemistry between these characters is a powerful thing, and I'm looking forward to a lot more stolen moments for Rena and Wallace down the road.
There were so many twists and revelations as Strength wound down, that by the time it was done I was left craving so much more. The paranormal side of the story gets really amped up, and Carrie Butler's Dynari took on a whole new light. With many questions still left unanswered, the sequel is definitely on my "must buy" list, and I highly recommend this book to romance and fantasy fans!! -
Strength follows the story of Rena. A normal college student, who one day walks right into social outcast, Wallace. It only takes one meeting with him to realize that everything she thought she knew about him was wrong. She desperately wants to know what's wrong with him and to prove the theories about him wrong. She soon finds out that there is so much more to Wallace than meets the eye and will have to decide if being with him is worth possibly risking her life.........
Strength had me drawn in from the first page. I liked the mystery surrounding Wallace and I enjoyed trying to figure out exactly what was going on with him. I thought the pacing of the story worked out really well. I enjoyed Carrie Butler's take on paranormal romance. I think this book has something for everyone. There was some good action, suspense, mystery, twists, and romance. I actually like that the romance wasn't the main focus of this story.
Overall, I found this book to be very enjoyable and I'm looking forward to seeing what will happen next!

I must be honest and say that I wasn't sure that I was going to like Strength, but I requested to be a part of the blog tour because it sounded so interesting and I wanted to give new adult another chance to blow me away. I am so glad that I did because Strength was a delightful surprise!
Rena is a college student, who until she runs into outcast Wallace, is pretty normal. Intrigued by his reputation for having psychotic breaks in his dorm room, Rena begins to spend more time with Wallace. Wallace is reluctant to share the truth with a too-curious Rena, but as the two fall for each other, it becomes harder and harder to hide secrets. Soon Rena is swept into the dangerous world of Wallace's supernaturally-powered family and must fight with him to save his family from war.
I loved this book. I loved it. It was extremely entertaining, so much so that I read it in one day. The plot, prose and relationships between the characters were fascinating. I could barely put it down to be productive. There was just something about it that drew me in and locked me there until the very end. Even then, I was sad that this first part of the journey the author's provides her audience was completed. And finding out there is no news on book two was heartbreaking because I am not ready to let go of these characters!
Wallace and Rena were a great couple. They are both strong, brave (sometimes irrational) characters. Easily relatable and realistic interactions made for a smooth progression of the story. Rena is one of my favorite female leads for this line alone, "'Feels like I'm going to kick you in the face if you don't stop bugging me about it.'" I talk like that all the time, and this may be the first time I've read of someone using "my threat." Wallace was hot, too. He's a bit of a typical character, minus the sleeping around, but he was sexy and sweet and swoon-worthy times ten. These characters were just awesome. While I cared most about Wallace and Rena, I really liked the way the minor characters were involved. No one felt out of place, or forced. (Though, I'm sure I'm not alone in saying that I wanted to punch Cole in the junk several times.)
This was definitely an original tale. From what I've read thus far, new adult novels have not impressed me. Strength helped turn that around though, because while it was directed for an older age group, it was not focused on sex, or outrageous stereotypes. Most of the other new adult novels I've read have been extremely sexual, to the point where I was annoyed rather than intrigued. There are some minor religious themes in this. Normally, I am turned off by stories that really incorporate religion, but I found that in Strength, the story was actually enhanced by it. Though I must be honest and admit, there was one scene where I noted annoyance.
Overall, Strength is a good read for fans of paranormal new adult novels. Fun and sexy, this was an excellent debut. I am eagerly anticipating the sequel! (Also, yay for another story set in Ohio. BAM! Love it.)
I received an e-copy of this novel for my honest opinion and review from the author. -
Interesting take on the paranormal romance set in a college environment, a genre which has been overdone but this provided an fresh outlook.
I liked every character especially Wallace, such a sweetheart. Also love Cole and his bad boy ways.
Humour, drama and decent sexual tension between the main characters
I will definitely read the next book -
Ohhh..this is such a fun and surprisingly amazing read! I loved it and the ending was splendid! :)

It was all I could do to suppress a shiver as the warmth of his breath danced over my skin, his scent clouding the air between us. God, it smelled so familiar, like the air before a downpour.
The word around campus is that Wallace Blake is a madman. And if the strange noises that come from his room each night are any indication then those rumours are true. But when Rena Collins runs into Wallace in the hall she is shocked to see that he is incredibly gorgeous, as well as considerate and caring. So Rena sets out to find out a bit more about Wallace. In the process she discovers that not only are the rumours about Wallace completely crazy, but she really enjoys his company and finds herself opening up to him as they spend more time together.
But Rena learns that Wallace has secrets. For one, why does he clam up whenever there is a mention of his twin brother Cole? After overhearing a conversation between the brothers, Rena becomes embroiled in the supernatural world that she never imagined actually existed!!
I can't begin to tell you how much I loved this book. Everything flowed so perfectly. There was the exact right amount of romance, heat, supernatural, mystery and Humour.
"See, this is what I like," Cole interjected with a laugh, dusting himself off. "One second she's all timid and then reeoowr! Hellcat."
Rena is a kick ass character. She is gutsy, spirited witty and outspoken about what she believes in. But she also had moments of vulnerability. She is compassionate and caring and I think once she cares about you, she is in for the long haul. I loved the relationship that she had with her roommate Gabby. They were hysterical together!! There were quite a few times that I laughed so hard that I had tears rolling down my cheeks.
Wallace is such a complex character. He has, and continues to endure so much. There were times that my heart ached for him and what he has gone without throughout his life. He carries a heavy burden on his shoulders and keeps people at arms length. But he didn't count on Rena's determination and the extent of the feelings that they share for each other.
So help me, as long as I live, I'll never get tired of seeing that man shirtless.
I adored the romance between Rena and Wallace. There was no instant love but a relationship built on friendship first. But when things heat up between the two of them, boy do they heat up!!! The moments that they shared together were wonderful. Bt there are plenty of obstacles for them to overcome.
I also have to make mention of the book cover and title of the book. They were another perfect aspect of the whole reading experience. They just fit the story to a tee. But to be honest I really can't find fault with anything related to Strength. It was a near flawless read for me. I was anything but happy the few times that I had to put it down and stick my head into the real world. It's definitely a book that I will read again and cannot wait for the next book!!!
5/5 Swoony Wallace Stars!! -
First can I just say that this series is going to take the NA New Adult genre by STORM! This story had the elements I love about a supernatural world. The flow of the story was so incredible that I could not put the book down once I started reading it. I first came across the book doing the cover reveal and then it was released on my son's birthday. I was so excited to be a part of this tour because the book cover SCREAMS red me and the blurb had me hooked on he screams at night.
Rena is your average college girl. She is loving school and her classes and friends. Then one day she is not paying attention and runs right into the schools mysterious bad boy Wallace AKA Wall. He is all muscles and all sorts of yummies to the tummie! At first Rena is like OMG because she has heard all the rumors surrounding Wall but as she gets to know him she is intrigued by him because he is nothing like what they say he is. He is kind and sweet and protective of Rena. She can't understand why he spends his time alone because he is everything she wants in a man and more. But Wall is the way he is for a reason and Rena will soon find out.
Wall just wants to be left alone to go to school and try and have a normal life. But you can't have a normal life when you have the gifts or curse how ever you look at it that Wall does. SO when he and Rena start to get close he knows it is a bad idea but he can't seem to pull away. Then his family comes meddling and Wall has no choice but to save and protect Rena from them. A storm is brewing within Wall's family and a battle is eminent and Rena is caught in the middle of it. What will Wall do to save Rena and will Rena sacrifice to be with Wall?
This is a must read book! If you love supernatural and swoon then this is the book to read! I need book two like ASAP!!!!!!!!!!! -
This book is all about Strength. It starts with Rena running into Wallace, known as the madman around campus. But Wallace isn't what people think. This guy is a whole level of awesomeness. He's broody (yeah, we all love that type. :D) kind and his heart is as big as the universe. Rena takes a chance to get to know him and their relationship builds from mere friendship to best friends to lovers. (EEP! See, I just love these kind of stories, so thanks for hooking me with that one, Carrie) oh where was I?.. Yep. And for the first time Wallace finally opens up to someone who isn't his family, tells her what he is (although part of the revelation is brought about by the force that is Cole, Wallace's brother. I could go on about Cole, but that means I might not finish this review. Cole was one of my favourites, so yeah I'll stop there and hope Carrie feels pity on me and gives us --and other Cole fans his story soon...or someday. No pressure.)Rena is one of the funniest and impulsive heroines I've ever read. She is as stubborn as Wallace is strong. Actually both of them are stubborn, which brought about some very great scenes full of conflict between the two. The downside to their relationship is that Wallace cannot touch Rena without bruising her. There were some twists in the story I didn't see coming and my jaw kept hitting my desk. I have bruises to prove it. And finally the Mark of Nexus that binds Rena and Wallace. Now that was pure genius. And I have to warn you, Wallace is . . .wow! yeah, that. A force to be reckoned with. I fell inlove with this guy. I really enjoyed the introduction to this unique world Carrie created.
Highly recommended!!! -
Rena, like everyone else, has always thought of Wallace Blake as the campus resident psychopath - the strange noises coming from his room have led to rumours getting out of control. But when she meets him, he seems like a normal guy. I liked reading about a love interest who isn’t an asshole for once – and is the campus outcast rather than popular with everyone! I loved all the characters. Rena is spunky and strong, and even though she’s in way over her head with the supernatural world she’s landed herself in, she never lets Wallace or his not-so-friendly brother, Cole, intimidate her.
The pace is leisurely at first, giving us time to get to know the characters, but then at 40%, BAM! Plot twist. I loved it. From that point on, I was hooked and had to know what was going on! The pace is faster in the second half and I really enjoyed finding out about Wallace’s family and their different supernatural powers. I thought this was an original spin on the paranormal genre!
The romance is both sweet and complicated, given that Wallace can’t touch Rena for fear of hurting her due to his uncontrollable strength. Nevertheless, there’s some great chemistry between them. The emotions are strong and kept me rooting for the characters. This is a fabulous debut novel and one I’d recommend to fans of New Adult looking for something on the paranormal side! -
love it!!!!! a gentle giant and a nosy girl. great combination. can't wait for the next series!

I couldn't figure out why this book had such good reviews. I guess it's just me. I had too many issues with it, as you can see down below.
I couldn't stand Rena. She was like this tiny, annoying gnat that kept flying around my face and wouldn't go away. After befriending Wallace, she feels like she has the right to get more involved in his life. It's strange because she doesn't seem that involved in any of her other friends' lives. What did Wallace see in her? I have no clue. Maybe considering he didn't really have many friends, she was the most attractive of the females? I honestly don't know. To me, it was one bitchy comment or stupid moment after another. I so wanted something bad to happen to her.
Wallace... What can be said about him? He seemed kinda boring to me. Yes, he was the sweet, hot boy next door kinda character, but ...
Gabby... All she does is flirt and ends up in bed with people. She's studying to become a doctor? There's no way!
Questions/Comments:
How are sweatpants and yoga pants in the same category? Sweatpants are usually baggy and make you look bigger by hiding your figure. Yoga pants are the complete opposite, they're tight/form fitting.
After the fire alarm is pulled, everyone is outside. Rena is wandering around or something, I honestly have no clue what she was doing. (This was after she talked with Gabby and Aiden.) Well, Wallace makes a comment behind her, and she's getting ready for a fight. Why? "One hand automatically shot up to block my face, and the other fisted tightly."
Rena had been drinking and was heading...wherever. Not her room because Gabby and Maverick were going there. So, "I pushed back on the bar, and the door swung open...I flew out into the night. 'Oomph!' Stones and shards of ice cut into my palms as the door came back and hit me in the hip." HUH? She doesn't fall...the door just swings back and clips her hip. So how does she end up with ice shards and stones cutting into her hands?
It was obvious that Rena was attracted to Wallace, but at the same time, had no issues with Gabby going after him. I understand that to a degree. Wallace is the 'crazy guy', it's fine to like him as a friend but nothing more. The part I don't get is that if Gabby did end up sleeping with him, would his and Rena's friendship be the same? I'm pretty the answer is no.
How was Wallace, maybe only a year older than Rena? He'd already received his associate's degree. Rena sounded as though she jumped right into college after high school. Plus, why would he be living in a dorm?
Yes, we know Rena was short. But how was it that when they're all doing laundry, Gabby's on the floor, Rena's on the bench, yet, she's able to turn and look Gabby at 'eye level'? What kind of bench was that?
Cole, Wallace, and Rena. That was where I had a major issue with Rena. For some unknown reason, she felt as though she had the right to find out what the brothers were fighting about. Again, they've only been friends for what? A few weeks. Makes sense to me. Considering she doesn't know anything about Cole or Wallace's family at that point, she still ends up basically thinking Wallace was cold because of the way he acted towards his brother. "When faced with his own flesh and blood, he just stood there. Angry, wounded, too stubborn to accept anyone's help."
I can see being friends with someone, for a while, and trying to help them with family issues. IF you know the story on both sides or have been friends for more than a few weeks! It was funny how she thought it better to find out Cole's side of the story, the unknown brother, rather than trying harder with Wallace. Just because you're friends, doesn't mean you have to tell the other person everything. "I wasn't doing anything wrong. If anything, I was going out of my way to help a friend." I just couldn't believe she actually believes that crap.
I've never had a flat tire before, and even I knew what happened with Rena's car. Just another negative on her part. Stupidity.
When Wallace arrives to 'save Rena' from his brother...again, more stupidness happens with Rena. "My eyes show wide as I flailed in a last ditch effort to grab something." That was when she was about to fall off the bed...yeah...that was it. For some reason, the author wanted her falling out of a bed to seem very traumatic. Moving on, how can Rena actually get mad when she realizes that Wallace must have been in the area? Or hadn't told her that he'd killed someone? Why would she be crying over it? "The hostage isn't going anywhere with anyone, until someone answers some damn questions." Really Rena? Wallace shouldn't have to tell her why he'd killed someone. Considering Cole had already told her the story, I just don't get it. She acted like Wallace had killed someone she knew or something. No sense there.
"Why didn't you just help him to begin with? You could have spared us both a lot of grief." Haha Wow! I can't believe she'd actually say that to Wallace when the whole fighting brothers thing didn't even involve her.
With Wallace's 'clusters', how does he not always look like he's been beaten up?
Rena and Wallace are 'getting close' at his grandma's house. He stands up trying to distance himself from Rena. Now, if a guy is trying to seem uninterested sexually in a girl, why stand up when you have a boner? He could have tried to hide it but nope.
The new waitress. "Aiden, Gabby and I gave her blank stares..." Really? All because she didn't know what they wanted to drink? Bitchy much? Or better yet, when it's mentioned the new waitress was starring at Wallace...Rena whispers to him, "I'm protective of my friends." Right. That darn waitress certainly seemed fishy and up to no good.
When Rena was with Cole, he ended up cutting her neck. A week later, she still has a bandage on it? If it would have been deep, then stitches would have been needed, but there were no stitches...
Another bitchy moment for Rena: "Oh, yeah, because having superpowers must be so damn hard...It was a reflex...but it was the truth." Yes, because being unable to have real relationships for fear of crushing the person and knowing the negative feelings they have towards you...sounds like fun, sign me up!
During their emotional/feelings talk, Rena assumes Wallace knows what's better for her...hence, he doesn't want a relationship (other than friends) with her. Right. "I want the chance. I don't know why you don't." Is she seriously this stupid?
Again, why was she surprised he'd never had a girlfriend? Does she listen to anything he tells her?
Rena's father is retired military and works as a Walmart Greeter? How old is he? Is he injured? Sorry, but the only people you see as greeters are old and/or handicapped in some way.
Gabby has a questionable stain on her blanket. She's washed her sheets but not said blanket. Why?
After waking up, Rena sees Wallace and Cole talking. They look over at her and the first thought that comes to her tiny, unintelligent brain is, "What? Were they going to tag-team me?" Seriously? What in the hell would make her even think that?
Again, back to how Rena is way too pushy, wanting to get into everything and anything Wallace is involved with. "He was trying to shield me...His problems are mine now." Um, when it comes to a group of supernatural people...unknown issues have arisen and death is on the table for the grandma...yes, it would make sense for Rena to go along with. She's tiny, with no powers, and would only get in the way. Even after Wallace calls to tell her that she's out of her league, she's still clueless.
Again, again, again with the stupidity! She gets to Wallace in the woods and it's so obvious that his cousin is controlling him, but, of course, Rena has no idea what's even going on. She assumes that Wallace is randomly being mean and hurting her. OMG.
Why is it, that even after Faye tried to kill Wallace, he goes on to say, "She's too analytical to kill us without understanding the threat we posed in that vision." -

Favorite Quote: “So help me, as long as I live, I’ll never get tired of seeing that man without a shirt on. How he stays so humble, I’ll never know.
When college student Rena Collins finds herself nose-to-chest with the campus outcast, her rumor-laced notions are shattered. Handsome, considerate, and seemingly sane, Wallace Blake doesn’t look like he spends his nights alone, screaming and banging on the walls of his dorm room. Hell, he doesn’t look like he spends his nights alone, period.
Too curious for her own good, Rena vows to uncover the truth behind Wallace’s madman reputation–and how two seconds of contact had left her with bruises. Of course, there are a few setbacks along the way: guilt, admiration, feelings of the warm and fuzzy variety…
Not to mention the unwanted attention of Wallace’s powerful, supernaturally-gifted family.
They’re a bloodline divided by opposing ideals, two soon-to-be warring factions that live in secret among us. When Rena ends up caught in their crossfire, Wallace has no choice but to save her by using his powers. Now they’re really in trouble. With war on the horizon and Rena’s life in the balance, he needs to put some distance between them. But Rena won’t let go. If fighting is what it takes to prove her own strength and keep Wallace in her life, then thats what she’ll do–even if it means risking a whole lot more than her heart. (Goodreads)
Strength is a new adult paranormal romance for whom fans of Jennifer Armentrout’s LUX series might enjoy. Set in the present, we are introduced to Rena Collins as she stalks the college campus madman Wallace Blake. Curious as to all the rumors of his insanity, she soon learns he is not insane. In fact, to her disappointment, he is rather normal and explanations are given for his seemingly violent behavior. Rena and Wallace form a tentative friendship which leads to some amazing and dangerous revelations. Revelations that could spell disaster and possibly death for Rena.
Strength made me laugh. Seriously giggle. A heavy character driven paranormal new adult that has all the potential to be an entertaining series. Action, suspense, intrigue, humor, snark, romance, and two engaging protagonists whose witty banter and sexual tension will keep you on your toes. Fast pacing made this story a fun to read. Ms. Butler finds just the right tone to keep the story flowing and keep her readers entertained.
“Are you alright?” She couldn’t stifle a grin.
Geez, that was really comforting. Didn’t she care I almost choked? No, I realized. That wasn’t it at all.
I eyed her, setting the glass don. She knew, that sneaky old woman knew. “Sorry,” I muttered. “I guess it was still a little hot.”
She folded her hands on the table. “Now, now…it’s not that I wanted to be made aware of such things. He is my grandson after all.”
I winced. “I’m not going to lie to you, Clara. That’s awkward.”
Rena, our heroine, is snarky, funny, and more than able to handle her own when it comes to life in general. Even with Wallace blowing hot and cold on her, she gives as good as she gets and watching them bicker is fun. She is attracted to Wallace but also has a healthy fear of him. And she should. She makes no apologies for her fear. Yet, she also doesn’t let it cripple her. She accepts his “situation” and strives to support him regardless. She has a realistic attitude and her reactions are spot on when it comes to certain situations. She’s a fighter. She has a great relationship with her family and friends and we aren’t subjected to any real emo situations where we have to wade through any real trauma or tragedies towards their relationship.
Wallace is a fantastic beta hero. I adored him. Condemned by students for certain situations over which he has no control, he generally keeps to himself. Buried deep inside him is deep vein of pain, both physical and emotional, and guilt that we learn stems from an incident that occurred in his childhood. His vulnerability is made even more heartbreaking when highlighted by his physical attributes. Meeting Rena opens a new emotional pathway for Wallace. Her unflagging support and friendship allows him to see himself through her eyes. Not as the monster he feels like, but an attractive man whose friendship is valued. He, in turn, supports her when she feels vulnerable and offers a strong support to stand at her back. I like that he isn’t your average NA hero. He’s not a bad boy in need of rescue from a good girl. He isn’t screwing away his pain through multiple coeds. He’s NEVER even had a girlfriend. Draw from that what you will, my friends. I will add that while the sexual tension is high, the actual physical aspects never go beyond second base. There is a good reason for this.
Butler’s revealing of Wallace’s family secret is done in such a way that’s both amusing and intriguing.
“See, this is my “WTF? face.”
Rena’s reactions are spot on though I was surprised by her relative ease around Wallace afterwards. I did like her curiously concerning it all. She asked a multitude of questions that spoke well of her intelligence. The premise is interesting and unique in makeup though I did have problems with the overall execution. I felt the story’s balance between the romance and the plot was uneven. The world building didn’t flesh out as much as I would have liked. We are only given the story in the present, so some aspects left me confused. I also found some scenes and characters were given too much scrutiny, only to fade away. Perhaps they will be brought back and further explored in book two.
A cast of appealing and well developed secondary characters rounds out the story. Each one a strong presence and able to carry their own story. I look forward to reading more in depth about Cade (Ass Cade-giggle), Gabby and the rest of the cast and see where their personal stories led. The ending comes at us fast and hard, and I would have enjoyed a bit more of a sedate pace in it’s conclusion. We are shown what exactly what Wallace and his family’s heritage is comprised of and what they are all capable of. Though the main conflict is resolved, we are left with some questions and clues as to what’s in store for us in the second installment; title and release date TBA.
Strength offers a different look for New Adult which is greatly appreciated by this reader when the majority of them are unbearably alike. I am certainly looking forward to reading more from Ms. Butler and her Nexus in the future.

Readers Live A Thousand Lives
It is no secret that I have taken a real liking to the New Adult genre, mostly because the characters are around my age. That being said, with the exception of the Providence trilogy by Jamie McGuire, all the New Adult books I have read have been heartbreaking emotional contemporaries. When I got the review request for Strength, a paranormal New Adult, I knew right away that I wanted to give this book a shot. I love a good paranormal book, so throw some new adult characters into the mix and we have a winner.
Not only was the book paranormal, but it was a different type of paranormal. I have never encountered this type of supernatural being before and that made the book even more enjoyable for me. I liked that I didn’t know what was going on immediately and that I got to guess along with the characters.
Rena, our heroine, is a feisty one. She is the kind of character that knows when she is wrong and she is willing to own up to it. She has her faults, but don’t we all. At times she was a meddler, which really annoyed me at one point, but in the end she always did what she felt was right.
Then we have Wallace, who is all sorts of schmexy. I really liked reading about his character. He was a great mix of gentleman, tortured, mysterious, sweetheart, and protective. He is very easy to love and gosh the picture I have of him in my head is just gorgeous!
I feel it necessary to mention Cole in this review. While he doesn’t make the best first impression, I can kinda sorta almost get why he did what he did. I don’t really forgive him, but I can see it. As the book progressed I warmed up to him a bit because he is just too damn funny. Then we have Gabby, Rena’s BFF and roomie, and I wasn’t a big fan of her. She was too “in your face” for me. To me, at times she didn’t come off as a very considerate friend.
Like I said, I really enjoyed this book. It had just the right mix of romance and action and mystery. The story moves along at a good pace and it kept me turning pages. It was definitely a book where I repeatedly said to myself “just one more chapter.” The only thing I didn’t like was teeny tiny. As an accountant, I couldn’t help but take this a bit personal. At one point that author included that accountants don’t have much human interaction. I’m sorry, but all I do all day is interact with people for numerous reasons, so yeah we accountants do have human interaction. But I digress, I took this more personally that I probably should have, I just don’t like the stereotypes.
Overall Strength was a great read and I would definitely recommend it to someone who is a paranormal fan. It is a fun read with likable characters and a nearly impossible romance you cannot help but root for.
*I received a copy of this book from the publisher in exchange for a fair and honest review -
As a writer, I’m jealous of Carrie Butler’s ability to bring her characters, not only to life, but practically jumping off the page. It takes significant skill to create such a credible and truly vivid voice, precisely what Butler has managed to do in Strength.
I don’t read very much Upper YA because I find the voices to be typically whiney or overly snarky in an effort to draw the reader in. Shatter Me is a prime example. It’s like nails on a chalkboard to me. The author relies too much on this technique alone and the story suffers for it.
But Strength is different. Technically classified as New Adult rather than YA, its audience is a bit older, college-aged, and while protagonist Rena Collins definitely has attitude, it doesn’t distract from the story. In fact, it strengthens and solidifies it. Rena’s voice is so amplified, impactful, and mesmerizing, it pulls you through the story with effortless grace and authenticity.
The story itself is fast-paced and very fresh. I don’t read too much paranormal anymore because so much of it feels the same—vampires and werewolves and zombies, oh my!—but Strength brings a new type of hero to the supernatural world, and yet, it’s not overdone. It’s not the entire story.
The very heart is the bond and relationship that develops between Rena and her exceptionally hunky dorm neighbor, Wallace Blake. It’s very age-appropriate with just the right amount of sexual tension and suitable dialogue, yes, including a VERY slight amount of swearing, which, as the mother of a college-age son, I know is entirely relevant and pertinent. But it is in NO way obtrusive enough to distract from the story itself.
Now Wallace, oh yes, Wallace. He’s exactly what most ladies love in their book-boyfriend—tall and dark, gorgeous and sexy, brooding and tormented—but more than anything, all he wants is to protect Rena, from his brother, the rest of his supernaturally charged family, and more than anyone, from himself and the very strength that could hurt or even kill Rena if he’s not careful. But the two come to be connected in a way even they cannot fathom or understand. And that is where the soul of this adventure is grounded.
The secondary characters are equally dynamic and contribute a fair amount of comedic relief. I especially loved Gabby, Rena’s roommate and best friend. And Wallace’s brother. Cole, added just the right amount of bad boy we love in our romance.
I highly recommend Strength, especially to lovers of youthful romance, paranormal or otherwise. -
ABOUT THE BOOK:

MY TAKE ON IT:
This story totally sucked me in. The premise was interesting and the global threat that Rena becomes aware of is fun. Well, it's creepy but made for an interesting story. The story kept me thinking about it even after I'd moved on to other books.
And talk about family drama!
I felt for Rena's personal situation and found Wallace intriguing. The secondary characters were interesting and varied, and one even managed to lead me astray.
I confess that something Cole does really angered me, and the way Wallace and his family blew it off as if it wasn't any big deal made me doubt their sincerity. I understand from a character interview of Cole I read that there's more wrong with him than was clear in this book, but more information on that will be forthcoming. That's good, because I really wanted to like him. Actually, I had to fight liking him. In some ways, he has the potential to steal the show.
While New Adult (NA) has a bad reputation for being all about sex and some of it quite graphic, this book is not. But there is one almost sex scene and some sexual references, so be warned.
I give it 4 1/2 stars rounded up to 5. -

When I first read the blurb of this book, I was pulled in by the idea of magic and mystery that it suggested. I absolutely could not resist the idea of the two warring magical bloodlines. I was every bit as curious as Rena to find out what Wallace's secret was, why he was screaming and banging on the walls of his room at night. I was certain he was battling some sort of demon, or evil relative trying to suck him into a magical war or something like that. My imagination ran away with me the moment I was done reading the blurb.
Strength was definitely a page turner. The characters were vivid and funny, and I adored each of them. I have my doubts about one of Rena's friends. Something about that character niggles at me, and I'm curious to see what role that person will play later in the series. Because each of the character so far has been key to the storyline in ways that I thought were rather unexpected at times. And what a storyline we have! It's action packed, romantic, full of great dialogue and twists and always engaging.
Rena: I really connected with her character. She's small, but feisty and she lets Wallace know that she is perfectly willing to take him on, no matter what that means. I love that she stands up to him and wants to fight for them. I admired that she stood up for him to all of her friends who thought that he was some sort of sociopath because of all the pounding and screaming coming from his room. I liked that she accepted responsibility for her part in the rumors about him, and that she wanted to make it right with him by letting people know what was really going on there. I haven't anyone so truly kick ass in a while.
4 glittering stars
Wallace: Oh, how I feel for Wallace. I can't imagine what it's been like for him living with his special gifts. They are something of a burden, and I admire him for dealing with them so gracefully. For such a big, intimidating sort of guy, he's really very warm and caring. When he said he wanted to be an elementary school teacher, I had a moment of pure awwwww. I love how fiercely protective he is of Rena, and how careful he is around everyone. I also like that he hasn't let his isolation isolate him emotionally. There were times were I felt he was really showing Rena how to understand and empathize with others.
A great page turner, and a wonderful debut novel! I am definitely looking forward to book two! -
I'm sooo late in posting this review! I was given an ARC copy of this book by the publisher for my honest review. So here goes...
Strength is a good starter novel to a series. While it was slow to pick up on the paranormal elements, it was none the less a refreshing take on the paranormal. I enjoyed all of the characters, especially Cole and Gabby...they made me chuckle and snort a few times. Although this book is about the developing relationship between Rena and Wallace those two stood out for me. I'm hoping Ms. Butler decides to put them together in the second book. They would be an awesome couple!!
As the story progressed in the beginning, I started to wonder if there was some religious aspect to it because Wallace is a church goer, like an every Sunday type of church-goer. Not that that's a bad thing! I just didn't get it at first, it actually confused me a bit. But thankfully, he's reasoning for it gets explained-albeit much later in the story.
While it took some time to get to main plot of the story, once it arrived it was action-packed, intriguing and original. The plot twist concerning Rena and her connection to Wallace was also good, it made the story interesting and gave their relationship some depth and believability.
I enjoyed Carrie Butler's writing style and the pacing of the story as well. . I got a good feel for her characters and could easily picture the scenes in my head. I got a clear sense of the message "Don't Judge a book by it's cover" in there too. =)
Although I enjoyed
Strength and it's characters I wished I could have gotten Wallace's POV and more background info on his lineage/family.
Overall, Strength is a good read with a fresh take on the paranormal with witty characters and a sweet developing romance between the two main characters. It's definitely one to check out and invest in!! -
I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
Let me start by expressing how grateful I am for having the chance to read Strength for free~ which by the way is totally worth buying!
After reading Strength I was like~
Strength is a very fun, refreshing, enjoyable read. I feel so good while and after reading it. I am definitely adding it in my to-re-read and favorites bookshelves.
No dull moments! Rena Collins is one hilarious heroine, I loved her!!
I ended bitching out the whole class.
That was the week my professor suggested I try independent studies.
it's the only socially acceptable way to indulge in my love of hitting things.
Not that I should admit that.
I really liked Wallace ~ he's every woman's dream..HOT.GOOD and sometimes aloof..makes you all want him more nyahaha
but surprisingly I love Rena more than Wallace. I love how strong-willed she is, she makes me laugh even in the most panic-filled situation...gawd I love the way she thinks :) but let's not forget the equally hot twin~ Cole, the lovable jerk...I want someone for him too..perhaps me?
I loved how this first book ended..not a cliffhanger that will make us all cray cray but enough to be excited..sooo excited for the next book..I'm totally ready to read the second book like..now?
I'm giving Strength 6/5 stars. It made me so happy I'm puking rainbows and unicorn right now.
Will I recommend it? Absolutely. -
I read a lot of books. So, eventually a lot of them end up sort of running together. It's hard to surprise me. And, it's rare that I find something that's unique. So, on one of the occasions that I find one of these special books, it's such a treat.
Butler does a really nice job of creating an air of mystery around Wallace. She makes him seem scary and evil and very mysterious. From that aspect, I was sucked into the story almost immediately. Rena literally runs into him in the hallway and gets bruises all over her. The "why" of that was intriguing and made me want to read more.
Wallace himself was really well developed. The mystery surrounding him notwithstanding, once Rena has an opportunity to interact with him some, he becomes even more interesting. He can be sweet and chivalrous and caring and passionate, but still manages to keep most people at arm's length. It isn't until Rena meets his family that she begins to see what a multi-faceted person Wallace really is. And what all his "otherness" is all about.
The Mark of Nexus was my favorite part of the whole book. What a cool concept! Even if I hadn't enjoyed Wallace and wanted to see where his and Rena's relationship goes, this one thing would've kept me reading to the next book in the series. It's a really unique idea and one that I can't wait to see developed further.
Bottom line, Strength was a unique book with a fresh concept and really likable characters. It's classified as New Adult Paranormal Romance - honestly, it's a very light New Adult. There's not much bad language and there's only one very mild sex scene. Nonetheless, this is a really good book!
