Big Book of Weekend Beading: Step-by-Step Instructions for 30+ Quick Beading Projects Reviews

This book has all the information that you would need to get started beading. Beginners would really benefit from the exhaustive technique instructions and helpful how-to photographs.

The first fifty pages cover general beading methods, stringing beads, bead embroidery and wirework. After that, the patterns are divided into the same four categories. Each pattern is labelled Easy, Intermediate or Difficult, and lists the estimated amount of time that the pattern should take. Per the title, most of the patterns are said to be able to be completed in a weekend, although there is one masterpiece of beadwork that cheerfully lists 50 hours as the estimated time for completion.

Other features include explanations of tools and materials needed, a list of suppliers and a few templates for shapes and letters at the back of the book. I liked the ease of the book, and the thoroughness of the instructions. This would be a nice gift for the beginning beader or the busy person who enjoys crafting.

There is a lot of content and each project is described in a step-by-step fashion. Unfortunately, the formatting doesn’t work well with my kindle. Most of the pictures are blank and the ones that are there, I couldn’t tell which picture went with which step since they weren’t matched one to one, but instead all of the pictures then all of the words. Not a good set-up for someone who learns crafts visually.

On the other hand, it isn’t sold as an ebook, so having it submitted to ebook reviewers was probably an error on the part of the publisher. I’d love to have another go at it if I had the actual book.

Note: while I was given this book as a gifted ARC, my opinions are my own and are given freely.

Beading is a craft that I am interested in learning and was actually browsing a local craft shop admiring all the beads a few days ago. With so much on display, I wouldn't have had a clue where to start with trying the most simplest of projects. What a coincidence to have come across a copy of this book.

This is an excellent book with varied projects for the beginner, intermediate and the advanced. Plenty of illustrations. Just about everything that one needs to know about beading can be found in this book. I hope to achieve some of these projects in time to come, but will start with a simple necklace or bracelet first. Recommended.

My thanks to Netgalley and the Publishers for my copy and this is my honest review.

This is a beautiful book with artful photos and 30+ projects you can do over a weekend. Includes step-by-step instructions for beading jewelry, clothing, home accessories, and embroidered textiles. A wonderful addition for any crafter’s library!

Grateful to NetGalley and Fox Chapel Publishing for the ARC. Opinions are mine.

Disclaimer: I received a review copy of this book via Netgalley.

This is just the type of beading book I need: short projects that are do-able in a weekend. As the parent of a toddler, I don't have a lot of free time, and I also can't leave larger beading projects sitting around in progress unless I want my kid to eat the beads. It's got a lot of photos to explain materials, tools, and techniques.

I was pleasantly surprised to find that the projects aren't all strung beads. I don't know why, but I imagined the book would be mostly beaded jewelry, especially beads strung by hand. Instead, the book includes several different types of beading: threading beads onto string/wire by hand, bead embroidery, bead loom projects, and even a method for decorating surfaces by applying beads (in this case, beads applied to the surface of a candle).

While I don't like every design, that's not a negative. I have no unrealistic expectation to find a pattern book where I'm going to love every design. The book is strong on technique, so even if you don't like the particulars of a project design, it gives you what you need to know to make what you want. I've done a little beading before but I think this book would work equally well for absolute beginners and folks like me who have a few projects under their belt. Advanced beaders would probably not find anything new here technique-wise but may get inspiration from the projects.

Bonus: the list of suppliers at the back of the book includes sources for the US, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand. It's unusual to find a craft book that caters to more than one country.

This book has a variety of beading projects for different techniques and levels of skill. You will find projects using the techniques of bead stitching, stringing, bead embroidery, loom work, knotting, and wirework. Projects include necklaces, bracelets, earrings, pendants, an eyeglasses chain, a key ring, a beaded lamp shade, and adding beads to an evening bag, a scarf, napkins, a sachet, a shawl, hair accessories, a lamp shade, a candle, and a table runner. The first chapters show you the materials, tools, and techniques that you will use to create these projects. You will learn about the types of beads, threads, wires, stringing materials, findings, and tools used in beading and jewelry making. The book teaches you Peyote stitch, netting, square stitch, fringing, loom work, knotting, crimping, bead embroidery, creating loops, working with jump rings, and making chain. The first chapters cover all you will need to know for making the projects. The projects vary from beginner, intermediate, and advanced skill levels. Each project lists all the materials, tools, and time needed, and has step by step, easy to follow instructions with photos for each step. Some projects also have variations that you can make using the same steps. A list of suppliers and an index is at the end of the book. The only problem I had with this book was that many of the photos in my advance digital copy were blank. I am looking forward to recreating some projects from this book. Beaders and jewelry makers will want to add this book full of fun beading projects and ideas to their collection. I received an advance digital copy from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.

This is a collection of 30+ (31 by my count) beading projects. There are decor articles as well as a fair number of jewelry and beading enhanced fashion and accessory pieces. The scope of the designs is heavily slanted to the beginner and quick-finish projects.

Roughly the first 25% of the content is introduction along with the standard picture tutorial of findings and techniques. One caveat, the pictures for the actual techniques for the beading sections are not very detailed or close-up. It is a good introduction to the techniques, netting, peyote, square stitch etc, but for tutorials, there are much clearer instructions available online.

The next 70% is given over to projects and patterns, roughly grouped by technique: General Beading, Stringing, Bead Embroidery, and Wirework.

The end of the book includes a short suppliers list with website affiliations, index, some of the patterns and photo credits.

This would make a good gift, along with some basic supplies, for someone who has been interested in learning to bead. The projects are easily finished without a large commitment in supplies or time.

This is a great book for everyone, beginners and seasoned beaders as well. The first part of the book explains beading in full. Everything from tools, types, tips, materials and more. Then you get over 30 projects with step by step easy to follow instructions. The projects in the book are great for jewelry, clothing, and more. All of the projects are made to be complete over a weekend.

I love all of the different beading projects. Some are made from string and small beads some are large beads and wire. The book is great to make projects as listed or you can even add your own twists to the project. These projects are great for making and giving as gifts as well.

I received this book from the Author or Publisher via Netgalley.com to read and review.

I've been interested in beading for some time now, but didn't know a thing about it, or how to get started. This book is a newcomer to the craft's dream! It goes through all of the materials, tools and techniques of beading; covering general beading, stringing, bead embroidery and wirework. It then gives over thirty beading projects, each ranked with level of difficulty and estimated time to complete.

This is a great reference book for anyone interested in the craft!

Many thanks to NetGalley for giving me the opportunity to read and review this book. All opinions expressed are strictly my own.

In exchange for a fair and honest review, I was provided a digital copy of this book by Netgallery.

For the beginning beader, this might be an intriguing volume, but I am unlikely to buy a copy because most of the projects were pretty run of the mill or impractical. I would not bead a fringe on a blanket or scarf because that makes cleaning of the item more challenging.

There are clear photos and instructions.

I would have given the book 2 stars, but in fairness I am a more advanced beader and that might be why I found this volume less than stimulating.

This book contains everything you need to produce stunning works of art in the shape of necklaces, bracelets etc., in a weekend.
This is ideal for the beginner and expert alike and is a great way to recycle broken jewellery in an easy straight forward way.
    Highly recommended.
I was given a digital copy of this very informative book by the publisher Fox Chapel Publishing via Netgalley in return for an honest unbiased review.

Great color pictures to go along with instructions. The instructions are well written so this book would be a good starting place for a beginning crafter. I also like that it doesn't just show how to use beads with jewelry but also other projects for around the house and fashion accessories. Even though I'm already experienced with doing some bead work I was even able to take away some tips and ideas so I recommend this book for both the new and experienced.

  • Barbara Tobey

Nice basic information. I received this ebook as an advance reader copy via NetGalley. The photos of the finished products were missing. Difficult to easily make a decision of which project to make. I felt as if I were in a beading class during the first portion of the book. Good information. I like the skill level and time requirements.

  • Jeanne Grace

I received an Advanced Reader Copy of this book from the publisher and am voluntarily reviewing it." This book is a challenge for the novice, I struggled with a few beginner items. The instructions were well laid out; however, the beginner projects were more advanced than I hoped. I finally gave up this book should be for advanced and above.

  • Leyla Johnson

Whilst this is a beautiful presented book with easy to follow instructions, I found the projects rather dated. If you are looking and learning various techniques in beading, this book would meet those needs beautifully.

  • ShariB

This is a great book on some common beading techniques. A well written, easy to follow description of each technique is given, the pictures that go with each technique I cannot comment on their helpfulness for each technique as the electronic version pictures were very blurry, I can only hope that the paper version is better.
This would be a great reference book for anytime inspiration strikes. Good for beginners and intermediate beaders.

  • Rain

They weren’t kidding when they said big! This book has a lot of project and a lot of content. Each project is described step by step in simple, easy to follow directions. That being said, this is not a book for beginners with no experience. Basic knowledge is necessary so don’t start with this guide, especially if you are using the the kindle version. While there are many pictures that accompany the steps, even on my tablet, they were not big or clear enough. I am sure they are perfect in the print version.

Overall, it’s a great book filled with cute designs..

  • Karen Nelson

The Big Book of Weekend Beading is a well thought out book. The section at the beginning regarding different beading techniques was well laid out, easy to understand, and would help someone with a advanced beginner's knowledge to learn more. However, for the novice, this is probably not the book to purchase. Some of the projects were interesting, but the ebook images were poor and probably worthless. I wouldn't recommend purchasing the eformat because to do crafts of any sort, images are important. This e book didn't have good images.
Some of the projects were very impractical (who beads a blanket? ), but I am certain that there are a subgroup of beaders who would like these types of projects.

Thanks to #NetGalley for a pre-publication copy of this ebook in exchange for an honest review.

Due to unforseen circumstances I was unable to read this book before it's ASCM ARC expired. I loved what little I saw, but do not feel I read enough to give a rating or proper review.

I liked it enough, however, to add to my book wish list in the hopes my family will buy it for me. ;-)
