Victor LaValle's Destroyer #6 Reviews

I had a much different ending in my head but this one was very satisfying!
    "Who benefits from your ignorance?"
That question makes me think all kinds of things! I love it!

I'm sad to rate this series so harshly; however, if I'm honest with myself, it was pretty disappointing. Sure, there were cute little nods to the original text, which served as instant gratification for my English teacher impulses. Yes, there was social commentary, which helped the series speak to a modern audience. Of course, the plot was promising. But very little, save for the art itself, was done artfully. The allusions to Shelley's work were ham handed. The social commentary could have (should have) been powerful; however, it, too, felt forced into the narrative rather than subtly woven throughout. The plot, riddled with holes (Why was the Creature in the Antarctic? Why did it know to go Montana where Josephine's lab was located?) and driven more by exposition rather than artful development, grew tiresome. Alas, I wanted to love the series and was let down. Good thing Shelley's work still speaks for itself.

The mom may have gone berserk, but at least in the end she was still with her son in his heart. This is a good thing I suppose because he is only 12 and doesn't know anything about the world and may have gone crazy living alone, but he doesn't have to. She just wanted him to see everything he couldn't see before. Before he did what his mother wanted him to he decided to do something for himself and went to watch the baseball game, one of his last memories that we see.

I liked this series. A big showdown in this final issue. A perfect ending.

Maybe Victor LaValle can do a redo on the Wolfman or the Creature from the Black Lagoon.

    Not a strong finish.
