After living overseas and retiring, the author and her husband decided to continue with their adventures by spending a year in New York City. Idaho to New York City: A Year in the Big Apple is the exhilarating, absorbing account of that adventure. On foot, bus, and train they relentlessly explored all the well-known and lesser sights and delights of all five borooughs, from the last natural forest in Manhattan to the last pony stable in Brooklyn to the last independent bookseller in Queens. Baseball and historic Richmondtown on Staten Island. Fresh pasta on Arthur Avenue and the E.A. Poe cottage in the Bronx. Buhkarian kebobs, Flushing Chinatown's dumplings, Schmidt's candy. Russian baths, concerts in the Harlem Meer, walks in the wildlife refuge. And everywhere they celebrated--Halloween in Windsor Terrace, the Christmas lights at Dykker Heights, the mermaid parade of Coney Island.

This is a good one if you plan to spend some time in New York City -- or especially if you move there! It reads rather like a diary with day to day activities recorded, but of course along with that the reader really gets to know Jane M. Newby. Or gets to know her again, as she was one of my schoolmates in 1966-1967.
