Dami Ajayi's second volume of poems, A Woman's Body is a Country, interrogates the ramifications of affection. A work of impressive artistry, these are poems of life turned inside out, where time cheats on writers, and the people and things at the brunt end of our oppressive pleasures come back to haunt us. Here is the poetry of the quotidian, a philosophic and profound interrogation of relationships, of words, of bodies and their burdens, of times and time.

I liked some poems, but I will reread them later because I couldn’t read this like a novel. I read poems slowly, so I know I’ll be coming back to this book. 3.5 stars for now.

The title of this book can lead a reader to believe that it’s a collection of poems exploring passion, pleasure and other related themes and in some ways it is, but it encompasses so much more.

In this body of work, you will find 47 poems, more than half of which are the poet’s musings about the mundanity and mysteries of life. To be specific, the poems capture BTS of relationships between families, friends, lovers and oneself.

The first poem is titled “The Alphabet Laboratory” and can very well serve a ‘What To Expect’ intro to the Ajayi’s style.
A style that uses varied forms of poetic devices to deliver a collection that is unapologetically Nigerian.

The only thing I didn’t like was that the representation of women leaned heavily towards objectification and exoticism.

Other than that, it’s a solid collection and I enjoyed reading it.

Dami's writing is eclectic and audits love and other spice of life.
I really had fun reading this piece.
Dami took us on an adventurous ride in the gondola of his literary dexterity and deftly row us past rippling waves of ecstatic and poignant themes. We caught rivulets of empathy at certain nautical points in our sojourn and then ford through tempestuous waves of complex but salacious analogies in each pages of our sail on the sea of this brilliant collection of poems.
Dami writes unapologetically and renders the issues of life in the most artistically enthralling form.

This book will rock your brows and cast shards of surrealism on your coats of literary colors.

Totally enjoyed his previous book, Clinical Blues. He did not disappoint with this one as well. One can actually feel the growth in writing. Good read!
