When Kinley Chandler abruptly lands in medieval Scotland, there isn’t much she’s leaving behind. With her body shattered and her military career over, Kinley has resigned herself to death. But in the past, all that changes.

Lachlan McDonnel, the laird of a clan of immortal highlanders, can hardly believe his good fortune. Not only does the mysterious lass save his life, she awakens his heart in a way he’d thought no longer possible.

But the druid spells that allow Lachlan’s clan to live forever have a dark side as well. He and his men know all too well that the magic folk never give without taking. Though he is sworn to protect them, the price of his loyalty may finally be too high.

Lachlan is the first book in the Immortal Highlander series. If you love brawny heroes, a mystical world, and a heroine with courage, then you’ll love this sizzling series. Join the romantic realm of the Immortal Highlanders by picking up a copy of this book today.

Lachlan (Immortal Highlander #1) Reviews

    3.5 Stars

I picked up this book because it was different and I was in the mood for a paranormal romance. So the Heroes can live forever and they try to kill the undead (vampires). Overall, I liked the romance, but good grief I didn’t understand half of the book.

The accents were a bit much and all the world building was too much with little to no explanation. I might just be a tad slow in this area, but at some point I didn’t even know who was good or bad.

I wanted to finish the book because I like the time travel premise and it was little angst between the Hero and Heroine. However, I was confused too much of the time. I will have to stop the series here. So sad.

    ABSOLUTELY RIVETING!!!
    Title: Lachlan
    Series: Immortal Highlander
    Author: Hazel Hunter
Designation: Book One of Series, Full-Length Standalone, No CLiffhanger, Medieval Historical/Time Travel/Fantasy Romance
    Reading Platform: Kindle Edition
My Rating: Five Sexy, Riveting Stars*****
Oh my! I loved, loved, loved this book! I'm fascinated by stories featuring mythology, folklore, and fantasy, adore Time Travel Romance, infatuated with Medieval Historical Fiction, addicted to steamy romance, obsessed with strong, sassy heroines, completely smitten with sexy Scottish Highlanders from any century, and when I can find it all in one great read, I'm in heaven! And that's exactly what Hazel Hunter delivered in Lachlan, the first riveting release in her new Immortal Highlander Series! There are so many things I truly enjoyed about this book so let's talk details!

Lachlan is a captivating, imaginative, fast-paced, exceptionally well-crafted and edited, full-length standalone historical medieval time travel romance with paranormal, supernatural and fantasy elements, and filled to the brim with compelling drama, pulse-pounding danger, edge-of-your-seat action, daring adventure, nail-biting suspense, heart-wrenching angst, steamy passion, and heartwarming romance. The narrative is beautifully written in the third person with multiple perspectives and this story had quite a few. In some instances, multiple points of view can be somewhat confusing to the reader if they aren't skillfully written, but Hunter does a fabulous job. All the perspectives are clearly discernible with most designated with individual chapters. I always enjoy stories written with clearly defined multiple perspectives. It allows me to know the thoughts of all the primary characters, not just the protagonists, and I especially love it when we know what's going on in the convoluted minds of the bad guys. I think it adds so much more depth to the story. The dialogue is smart, snappy, and flows effortlessly. Hunter obviously did her research because I found the language and terminology for the era to be authentic, articulate, and exceptionally well executed. In other words, Hunter's fourteenth-century characters spoke like fourteenth-century Scottish Highlanders. In reality, none of us would actually be able to understand a fourteenth-century Highlander, but Hunter did make them sound as realistic as possible, which definitely added to my enjoyment of this story. But without a doubt, my favorite element of every book is the characters, and this story is no exception. Hunter gives us a large cast of intriguing, engaging, and well-developed characters who literally explode from the pages, grab your imagination, demand your undivided attention, and completely capture your heart. I fell head over heels for the two protagonists, present-day Air Force Captain and wounded war veteran Kinley Chandler and fourteenth-century Scottish Highlander warlord and Laird of Clan McDonnell, Lachlan McDonnell. OMG! I loved these two characters! Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed all the characters but Kinley grabbed me in the very first chapter and Lachlan had me swooning in the second! They are fabulous together and complement each other brilliantly! The interaction between Kinley and Lachlan is absolutely captivating, their attraction undeniable, and their fate inescapable. When these two meet, sparks fly and passion explodes, and I do mean quite literally!

Did I like this book? No, I loved it! I was glued to my seat, white knuckling my ereader, completely captivated with my heart fluttering wildly in my chest as the time flew as quickly as the pages! I could not stop reading! Would I recommend it? You bet and I am but only for adult readers since it contains some several explicit love scenes! If you enjoy well-written medieval historical tales with supernatural elements, liberally seasoned with time travel, action adventure, danger, drama, passion, and romance, then this book is screaming your name! And if you loved the movie and series Highlander, this story will, most likely, tickle your fancy! Will I read this author again? Absolutely! And finally, was I entertained? Completely! Fabulous entertainment and an awesome read!

Captain Kinley Chandler has lost everything she's ever loved, her mother, father, beloved grandmother who took her in and raised her after the death of her parents, her career in the Air Force, thanks to injuries received while fighting for her country in Afghanistan, and now, quite probably her life as well. Even if she survives, she'll never be whole again. Kinley would rather die than live as only a shell of her former self. When Kinley decides to stop her suffering and end her own life, her efforts are met with a very unexpected outcome. Rather than tumbling down a ravine, which is what she planned, Kinley falls down a fantastical rabbit hole, plummeting back through time to the year 1314 where she lands right in the middle of a raging battle between a legion of Roman soldiers, who look suspiciously like vampires, and an army of medieval Scottish warriors, one of which is about to meet his maker unless she can save him. After realizing her body has somehow been miraculously healed and apparently enhanced, Kinley doesn't hesitate and springs into action, shooting fire from her palms to save the virile, handsome, red-haired Scotsman. Wait... What? She'd never believed the tales her grandmother told her about her Scottish heritage, thinking they were nothing but tall tales. Apparently, they held more truth than Kinley ever imagined. Oh dear! All of it has to be a dream, right? What else could go wrong for Kinley? A lot, actually! The handsome warrior could kiss her silly, abduct her, and take her back to his secret lair on the Isle of Skye. Oh, and he could also be an immortal Highlander who will live forever and fights the undead! Oh my! Will Kinley ever find a way out of her nightmare and if so, will she want to return to her life in the future? We'll see!

A very well written book. Loved the main characters and the time travel element. Didn't expect the Roman vampires, there were some pretty disgusting parts with those but overall it was a fast paced and exciting book.

  • Maria Dimitrova

If I have to describe this book in one word it would be adorable. The male lead is hot as hell alpha but not the asshole type and he acts so adoringly around the female lead Kinley. Most of all I loved that he found her independence and "male" knowledge incredible and never felt threatened by her. And their scenes together were simply adorable.

The plot is engaging and I was so curious to see how things will resolve I barely managed to stop myself from skipping to the final chapter midway through the book. Yeah, yeah, I know, I’m a barbarian but sometimes when I’m too curious I can’t enjoy a book and need those spoilers to slow down and savor the story.

This is a great first book in a series as it’s engaging and hints of many more things to be explored. And now I really want to pick up the next book but promised myself to read something I’ve already bought and clean up my Kindle and to-be-read shelf a bit before going on another book buying spree.

I found me a new author!!!

It's been a while since I've read a historical highlander romance along with time travel. For the past few years, I've mainly been sticking worth contemporary romance with a bit of paranormal and sci-fi thrown in. I thought the whole premise of this series was interesting so I started this first book. It did not disappoint! I love the whole magical druid aspect along with a race of immortal highlander who are out to fight a Roman army cursed as vampires.

It looks like each book contains its own story for each couple, but it looks like the series needs to be read in order because there is an overall arc that spans the books. If each book.we're read.out of order it may not make as much sense. I'm just glad this series is part of Kindle Unlimited. I'm going to jump in and start the next book.

This was a surprisingly good series. I really enjoyed it since it was my first time reading this author. It was a good mix of Kerrigan Byrne, J.R. Ward, and Barbara Longley. The first 3 books in the series are really good and funny and cute and romantic and a bit silly at times but I got lost in the world Hunter created. The 4th and 5th book kind of felt hurried and forced on the series. I still recommend this as good entertainment.

  • SheLove2Read

This started out really good with an introduction to the heroine, who is a wounded USAF veteran who has survived a terrible terrorist attack while in Afghanistan, and is now "recovering" at a VA hospital in California. If the book had continued along these lines I would have been riveted.

Instead, she takes a trip into the desert and somehow time travels to the Isle of Skye in Scotland, miraculously made whole by the journey into the past, where she stumbles upon a group of immortal highlanders engaged in a war with Roman soldiers who have been made into vampires.

    (insert eye roll here)

I gave it a shot but it only got more ridiculous from there. DNF at 29%.

it is what it is and you can not ask it to be more - 2.75*

I have loved time travel since I was a child. Of course then I was mostly reading science fiction but that love persisted. So normally I read any that come my way but there are just so many highlander time travel books that I barely give them a look. Still this caught my eye as a friend liked it.

Time travel books have a few questions they normally address.
    * What it the mechanism for the travel? - here we have magical druids and a sacred grove, but not much of an explanation. Still magic is enough for me.
    * How do actions in the past affect the future of the time travelers loved ones? -not addressed.
    * How does the future knowledge affect the past? - not really addressed
    * Can they go back and forth and are there any problems with this. - here they could but it has both a good and bad effect.

and of course they normally spend some amount of time detailing how the time traveller adapts to their new time. This one only did a little of that.

And that is because it was too busy with the details of the highlanders being immortal and using water to span distances, as well as the vampire Roman legion. I laughed at all this sillinessso even if the story was more than a bit weak I still had fun. And I want to know what happens with the change in Roman leadership so will likely read book 2.

    Good read

Interesting concepts and storylines. I liked the time travel

Kinely was a great heroine. She was tough and knew what she was good at and didn’t let anyone push her around. She as a great match for Lachlan.

Good start to the series. Great read to end 2017!

I got most of the way thru, but it held no interest. There wasn't enough character development. The story kept flipping from the 'good guys' story to the 'bad guys' story, and instead of giving us more information, it just prevented us from really learning about anyone. There was a lot of time devoted to reading about the bad guys doing bad things, and it didn't enhance the story at all. I won't be reading book 2.

I really enjoyed this book. It's the first one I've read by this author and I really liked the way she mixed highlander lore and history with some PNR aspects. I found myself quite wrapped up in Lachlan and his clan and I look forward to reading more of the series.

    Come to me here
I downloaded this novel because I am an author and I often read other novels that will help me improve my writing. In my novel, I have a "highlander" and a strong female protagonist. In "Lachlan", Hazel Hunter also has a "highlander" and a strong female protagonist. And it had some great reviews. So, no brainer. I could use it as research, and enjoy reading it as well.
My main purpose was to see how Hunter managed the Scottish brogue of her character Lachlan. I found what I was looking for, but I found something more.
First, best line ever: "Come to me here," which are the first words the powerful, sexy warrior Highlander says to the main character, Kinley. In my novel, my highlander says, "Come to me, Rachel," at a key moment in the relationship between Angus and Rachel. Hunter's line for her Scottish hottie has more resonance as a masculine command because of the word "here".
But beyond the language, and my research, I really enjoyed reading the strong female protagonist, Kinley Chandler, because she actually had skills that are rare in historical romance, and/or rarely utilized in a novel's development of a female character.
Kinley is projected from a military hospital in which she is healing from life-threatening injuries from a recent stint in Afghanistan, into the past. A search and rescue specialist, she has recon, mapping, hand-to-hand combat and other skills that are put to use as she takes her position in the Immortal army and joins the battle against the undead.
Often in historical romance we see the female strength coming from a difficult past life, which I used and which Hunter uses. We also see how the female is ostracized or must fight to use her strength in a society that does not value that in a woman, which we both used. Many authors stop there. But Hunter took it a step farther.
Though the military training of Kinley is secondary in terms of plot to the romance, it is still significant, especially in light of today's female empowerment in media (Wonder Woman) and society (#metoo) that continues to be showcased. I personally feel Hunter took her strong female protagonist and moved her into a new lens by giving her the physical skills and training to be of service to her medieval lover on the battlefield.
"Lachlan" is a good read for any traditionalist historical romance readers, but also, for those women who generally do not dabble in the heavily eroticised or "perfumed" historical fiction, this novel has a bit more to it.

Everything about this story was nicely done from the writing that flowed smoothly, interesting characters and lore, to the adventure and fast paced action. I loved both Kinley and Lachlan they fit so well together and I adored their mutual respect for each other along with the romance. There were multiple PoVs, but they were well done and added richness to the story. Ms. Hunter hit upon the right formula for a time travel romance it has the right amount of everything to make for an entertaining read. It has a strong heroine, a desirable hero, an interesting backstory/lore, and the right amount of historical facts added to add authenticity.

    Time travel

Immortal Highlanders, Roman Vampires, a heroine with mad fighting skills that can somehow travel through time and shoot fire from her hands. I know - sounds fun, right!! Which is why I read Lachlan, I wanted something fun to read. It didn't have to be an amazing storyline, just entertaining. And it was in kindle unlimited, so bonus.

  • Kelsey

DNF. I'm bored and the world building isn't great. Seems very scattered.

  • Charlene

This is a variant (at least for me) on time travel; injured soldiers; paranormal talents, etc.
Not my usual cup of tea, but it did hold my interest. May try second in series.

Just released this week! Yes, the novel was released this week!

Kinley Chandler is a dying Air Force veteran in a VA hospital. She was injured in an ambush in Afghanistan. She tries to kill herself and falls through a portal to a stone ring in 14th century Scotland. She is totally healed in the process as well as given the power to call fire to fight the undead Romans.

Lachlan, Laird of the clan McDonnel, is an immortal who the Romans previously slaughtered along with all his people. The druids cast a spell and brought them back as immortals because they were protecting the druids at the time. Lachlan has a bodyguard named Tharaen who is saved later in the book by Kinley. During that incident both Tharaen and Lachlan seen her injured form and finally believe her whole story about the future and her experience.

The pace is fast. The characters are interesting and individuals. The storyline is interesting and sets things up really well for the series to follow. The men are big and strong, but not brutes. The women are smart and sexy. The sex is hot! The ending has lots of potential for more to follow but is not a cliffhanger.

This has the potential to be a really interesting series with some interesting characters. The writing is quite good and kept me engaged. Now I need to get the whole first book to read to see where Lachlan and Kinley go from here! Get your copy and find out for yourself. Recommended.

    Sweet romance

3 1/2 to 4 stars. This was the perfect palate cleanser I needed after the run of meh books I’ve had. Time travel romances are sometimes hit or miss but this one was really enjoyable. The verbiage and clothing were historically accurate, it was well researched and well written. The H and h were enjoyable and both were badass in their own right. I really loved some of the side characters too, which makes it highly likely that I’ll read more of the series. Oh, and the smexy times were HOT. What’s not to love?

Cons: There wasn’t a ton of character development, and the romance developed pretty quickly, but - and I can’t mention this enough - sexy Scottish men.

  • JodyL

    Totally recommended read

Loved it. Lachlan and his clan are immortals in the 14th century that fight the undead. Kinley is a wounded soldier on the brink of death in the 21st century.
They meet up when druid magic brings Kinley back to Lachlan's time totally healed.
They must fight to save the mortals from the undead while trying to figure out why Kinley all of the sudden has fire that shots out of her hands.
This a great book. I see that this is part of a trilogy but I already wish that there would be many more than three.

I'm very familiar with the authors work and have eagerly waited for this new series. It did not disappoint, the time travel theme with a wounded female veteran with PTSD, that was definitely something new. The fact that it was back to Scotland, home of some mouth watering, immortal highlanders, just the right bonus. We get Roman vampires, druids and a thousand year old rivalry, it's just good fun. Can't wait for book two.

I received an ARC of this story and have voluntarily chosen to review it here.
