God's Leader Reviews
-
I found this book to be excellent, relevant, challenging and easily readable. It is written to anyone involved in church leadership and would be relevant to many, from small group leaders to pastors. Its aim is to give ‘direction, encouragement, correction and refreshment from Jesus through Scriptures.’
In my opinion the book meet’s its aim well. Andy gives 10 challenges to leaders, in his 10 chapters and for each gives a faithful expounding of a Bible passage to help it hit home, without jumping around with verses from all over the place. The parts of the Bible he chooses are relevant, his teaching from them accessible, and his application hard hitting, deeply personal and humbly given.
The most challenging topics to me were; the chapter on love and how that is so important yet undervalued. We could be the best speakers in the world, but if we do not love the congregation deeply, we are nothing. How often do we set aside time to grow in our love for one another? Also incredibly challenging was the chapter to use our talents to the full extent to bring glory to God. We need to sometimes push out of our comfort zone to use our gifts to serve him rather than falling into ruts. Finally, I was challenged by the chapter on prayer. How many of us our tempted to do ministry in our own strength rather than realise we need to be constantly asking God for help. It’s such a powerful, crucial thing, yet I barely value it at all in day to day life.
I would highly recommend this book to all Christians in any sort of leadership role. -
This has proven to be a very helpful book.
I found the the chapter titles helpfully challenging in their own right and each one was helpfully expanded with good biblical examples and practical illustrations.
I bought the book at a Fellowship of Independent Evangelical Churches (FIEC) leaders' conference which was on the theme of developing leadership. The conference, to me, had too much emphasis on male church leadership. This book, while most directly applicable to 'male church leadership', (and all the cover endorsements are from male church leaders), is a wider relevance and applicable to all leadership within the family of the church.
All the chapters were personally challenging but, if I had to identify the most personally helpful, I would choose "The loving leader" and "The praying leader". -
This book is basically a series of expositions from different Bible passages - but seen through the lens of what it means to be a church leader. It's as encouraging as it is challenging, I recommend it!

Excellent. Great to finally read a book that focuses more on Christ, his kingdom and the need for our reliance on him than on our skill as wannabe CEOs of an organisation.
-
A great series of sermon-like chapters on leadership.

Good book on Christ centred biblical leadership. Just wish it had been more detailed with thought out applications.
