The Sexy Librarian's Dirty 30, Vol.2 Reviews

No matter what my college students might think, 3,000 words is not very many freaking words.
Writing a single great scene, let alone an entire short story, in under 3,000 words takes a fair heaping of talent. Yet that's just what the 30 authors features in The Sexy Librarian's Dirty 30, Volume 2, managed to pull off.
Every story in this anthology is a delightful example of just how much excitement, characterization, tension, and - naturally - release you can pack into a tight word count. Sometimes touching, sometimes romantic, and sometimes heartbreaking, this collection is always amazingly hot.
I was, of course, immediately drawn to Janine Ashbless's Sweet Hel Below, which manages to tell a wildly creative and surprisingly touching love story between Norse gods, as well as transform an entire realm, in just a few pages.
Although Sweet Hel Below was (for me) worth the price of admission, all the stories in this anthology are impressive. The amazingly versatile Emmanuelle de Maupassant shines in The Honeymoon, which has to be one of the most sensual assemblies of 3,000 words ever created. I could taste the food, the wine...and the sex. ;)
I was surprised to see my conservative hometown of Colorado Springs featured in the unpredictable Jilling Off, and I loved the kinky twist on a fairy tale in The Return of the Snow Queen (not to mention the awesome fantasy/Viking vibe of The Seer), and Thunderclap just about made me cry into my Kindle.
These stories truly spanned the spectrum, from a kinky night in a contemporary, long-term M/F marriage to high fantasy BDSM. The one feature they all shared, without exception, was writing so strong I had to put the book down and just say, "DAMN!"
Very highly recommended. Just plan on giving yourself some alone time after you pick it up... -
Diamonds in the rough? Hidden in the leaves? Anthologies are like that: The Good, The Bad and The Ugly ride through them. There were some of that bad and ugly in this collection also, stories that were just a scene that dragged on too long, but then there were some really good stories that popped out with a smirk and the skinny cigar too.
For me the best story was the Norse queen in Hell. It was a delight with a beginning, end and even an epilogue all rolled into a short story with sex too. Then there was the story on the radio. That one flowed cheerily along and put you right into the stream from the beginning till the twist at the end. Don't you wish some radio personalities would get that call? The Egyptian fertility goddess tale bubbled with sex and adventure. Oh my Ra, we dodged a historical bullet that the Old Kingdom did not have the Internet! Who knew that your aunt did THAT in the Swiss Alps? Never trust a cannon, a pickpocket. But they do get theirs sometimes, some justice that is.
What do old writers with their assistants? What happens when the Snow Queen returns? You will have to read the book to find out.
Don’t worry about that noose around your neck, The Good has his rifle, wait for the shot. -
In reading (and writing) erotica, I tend towards the darker side of desire. I like to explore what's unconsciously hidden, or purposefully concealed, and there are plenty of these such stories in this collection: cleverly structured tales that offer a wry surprise and a bold twist at their conclusion...
Among my favourites are 'Return of the Snow Queen' by Tamsin Flowers, and Janine Ashbless' 'Sweet Hel Below'. Exquisitely told, and seriously seductive, both delve the struggle within us, between light and dark. Tamsin's story, inspired by 'The Snow Queen' surveys the ease with which we are tempted (albeit within a world in which a sliver of magic mirror may distort our vision and lead us astray). Janine's portrayal of the Norse underworld is no less enchanting, exploring our fascination with mortality, and the dual nature we each harbour: of shadows, doubt and putrefaction, versus our vitality and capacity for self-sacrifice and love.
RA Goli's 'The Seer' also draws on Norse mythology, using that rich seam of magical lore to explore universal truths. It evoked a strong emotional reaction from me, as did Sommer Marsden's 'Thunderclap' and Malin James' 'Canvas', each using gorgeous prose to delve emotional truths. In similarly sumptuous literary style are Brantwijn Serrah's 'Life Drawing 101', and 'A Polite Fiction', by Terrance Aldon Shaw.
Meanwhile, Chase Morgan's 'Honey, I'm Home', Elliot deLocke's 'Torrid Zone', Sonni de Soto's 'Do Not Disturb' and Michael Lewis' 'The Thief' each use action and suspense to enhance their atmosphere of highly-charged eroticism.
And, I MUST mention Landon Dixon's 'Moby Tit', and Spencer Dryden's 'The Dude', which are both masterpieces in their own, unique style. Landon has skilfully woven his bawdy ballad of a man obsessed with breasts, while Spencer's story, told anecdotally during a radio phone-in, uses the brevity of dialogue to keep us hanging upon the turns of the tale, until the marvellous 'punch-line' of the ending.
The 'Dirty 30' anthology is incredibly diverse, well conceived and executed, and damned hot!
