The Walking Dead #172 Reviews

Wow....that one was a really quick read! I think it was shorter by a few pages compared to the regular TWD monthly issue.

The title of this issue is "Hilltop Reborn". , which makes me happy to see . It was mostly about romantic relationships among the group. I was gonna say, "maybe George Romero was right when he said that '...The Walking Dead is too much of a soap opera'.". And I can still say that. Or maybe it's partly soap opera sometimes, and action/ zombie horror the rest.

In the "Letter Hacks" page in the back, one dude wrote in claiming to not be homophobic but not only made homophobic remarks but misogynistic ones as well. Now, artists and writers who work in the comic book industry are supposed to have a thick skin...but Robert Kerkman and the editor, Sean Mackiewicz...chewed his ass out for saying what he said. And, in this case they were right to do it cause he was pretty damned rude. There was another dude who wrote a letter that didn't seem bad but Kirkman and the editor sort of gave the same thing to him too. I don't know why they did that. I guess you can have a thick skin, but it gets to a point where someone will start to chew.

Back to the story, The Princess is still . I actually think her character might grow on me. She's probably just a little misunderstood.

That's it. There are two more issues left in 2017, can't wait for them and hope things pick up. Something is supposed to happen with Negan in December ( I'm going by the cover on that one ).

A decent issue with one hell of a cliffhanger ending!

  • Trav Rockwell

    That ending though 😬😬😬

So it was again a solid issue but the end OMG,

It's no wonder The Walking Dead is a legendary series, it truly deserves all the praise it can get. I love The Walking Dead and it's style. It's wonderful and I love the journey taken with Rick and the group as they roam the wasteland in search of life and stability.I have always loved comics, and I hope that I will always love them. Even though I grew up reading local Indian comics like Raj Comics or Diamond Comics or even Manoj Comics, now's the time to catch up on the international and classic comics and Graphic novels. I am on my quest to read as many comics I can. I Love comics to bit, may comics never leave my side. I love reading this and more, you should also read what you love and then Keep on Reading.

This is a review of the entire series.

Rick Grimes is a strong-willed deputy who missed the end of the world because he was in a coma for a month after getting shot in the line of duty. Shaken, starving and confused, Rick escapes the horror of the abandoned hospital only to be met with something far more terrible. Not only has the world ended, but the dead have learned to walk and to kill without mercy. After learning that his wife and son have fled to Atlanta from a single survivor and his son, Rick goes on a journey to reunite with his family and search for more survivors.

Rick quickly has to come to terms with the fact that the world has ended and only a select few survived. The dead have risen from their graves and they prey on the living. In a world where every minute feels like hours, where there's no such thing as law and order, where finding a small meal is a tremendous task, the walking dead are quite possibly the least threatening thing for the survivors to have on their breaking minds. Humanity is pushed to the brink of destruction, forcing them to embrace their cruel and primal nature in order to survive. Sometimes you have to be more concerned about who you let into your community so they don't kill you in your sleep and steal everything you once cared about. Rick has no choice but to abandon the ways of law and order that he's upheld as an officer for so long in order to protect the few loved ones he has left. He has to become a monster to protect his crew or risk being devoured by those who became more monstrous than him and even the walking dead.

Despite zombies running the world and having the series named after them, what really sets this series apart from the average zombie apocalypse tale is the focus on realism and the daily struggles, flaws and depth of the characters. There's plenty of badass zombie killing action, but the action often takes a back seat to give the characters plenty of times to share their extremely tragic yet endearing stories, grow through mutual suffering and learn to adapt to a world that has left them to die. Even after the world has ended, many people still can't see eye to eye. They turn on each other and kill each other when they should come together. Others form alliances in spite of their differences and try to rebuild over the corpse of everything that was lost. The daily human drama and conflict is more intense than any monster apocalypse could hope to be.

We watch Rick struggle to balance his old moral code with the many necessary evils he has to commit in order to survive and make the world a better place for the ones he holds close. We watch people like Glen, Dale and Maggie attempt to find love in spite of having every reason to be filled with fear, hate and self-loathing. Characters like Michonne have to learn how to forgive themselves and convince themselves they deserve to be loved despite all the blood on their hands. We watch the weak like Carl and Andrea become strong and sometimes the strong become evil like The Governor. Even monsters like the wicked yet oddly lovable Negan are given the chance to find new ways of redeeming themselves by struggling alongside the other survivors that have all been changed by the horrors of the fallen world.

The pacing is extremely slow and I can understand why that may be a turnoff for a lot of people, but I eventually learned to enjoy watching the characters grow, overcome their trauma, find meaning in life and learn to love again. The characters are forced to do many terrible things to survive and it haunts them every waking moment. The ways they overcome these regrets is very realistic, human and hopeful. The slow pacing really gives the feeling that we're living beside these people. The way every tiny detail of their lives and who they are is explored makes them feel very real and believable.

When I first started reading the series, I wasn't expecting it to have such an uplifting ending. It seemed so bleak and nihilistic for a long time and things would go horribly wrong even when they seemed to be going so well, but the finale channels all the pain, suffering and betrayal of the previous volumes and tops it off with a very touching and inspiring finish. This was never a story about hopelessness. It's about learning to appreciate the little things, learning to forgive yourself and learning to move on even when it's hard. When everything seems lost there's always more to be found, even when we believe otherwise because we convince ourselves that we don't deserve to be happy ever again. Instead of dwelling on what was lost, strive to try and make things better than they were before.

I've never been a huge fan of zombie apocalypse stories, but The Walking Dead had enough heart and strong social commentary to make me stick by the characters until the end and I enjoyed every moment of their long trial.

I really don't like Princess. She's only been in the comics for a short time, but she's already so irritating. I agree with Michonne that they shouldn't follow Princess into the building, and that they should leave her ass behind.

Princess talks too much. I know I probably said this in my last review, but it's still true and still really annoying. I really wish that Michonne would take her out, just so we could be done with the character already.

Moving on, I liked the conversation between Rick and Annie. I like that she sot of backed him up, when he started to express the self-doubt that he was feeling about sending Michonne and the others out on the trip.

I also liked the conversation with Rick and Mikey. I like that Rick has taken Mikey under his wing since the boy's parents died. Or at least, I think they died. There's so many characters, that I sometimes have trouble keeping track.

Michonne's group crossing that area with the water, I don't think it's a good idea. Though it might shave off five miles for them, there's also no telling who or what is in that water.

I feel like Carl's trying to take on too much. It's great that he wants to help get the Hilltop rebuilt so that the community can return to their homes, but I feel like he's overdoing it, so he doesn't have to grieve for Andrea.

As for Rick, I don't know what to think. On the one hand, yes, he needs time to grieve for Andrea. But on the other hand, as the leader, he needs to pull himself together and prepare for the next battle that's coming up.

The short scene with Dante and Maggie was nice. Especially since she wasn't being a bitch to him for the first time in oh, ever. Or at least that's what it feels like to me. She's usually yelling at him.

I'm sad that Jesus and his partner are leaving, but I get it. The only thing that I kinda have a problem with, is that they shouldn't be on their own. Smaller groups of people have a better chance of getting killed.

Seriously, this Princess character just annoys me. Hopefully I'll get my wish and they'll kill her off soon. Either that, or they need to make her grow up, or just be serious. And talk less.

I kinda feel bad for Rick, with him missing Andrea, and then with Carl going back to Hilltop and leaving him. I get that Carl needs to go and live his life, but I feel like he should've stayed a little longer and spent more time with Rick.

I like how optimistic Carl is about the rebuilding of Hilltop, though. I just hope that things continue to go well and that their community doesn't get attacked again right away, as that would suck.

As for William helping out Maggie and the others, I don't like it. It's not that I don't like him helping them. It's more like I feel like he's got an ulterior motive. He likes Maggie, so I feel like he'd think she'd owe him.

I like that they took a few moments to make some panels and show some of the work that's getting done to rebuild the Hilltop. While the scene between Carl and Lydia is somewhat sweet, I still can't find it in me to trust her.

As for Sophia, I know that she's still jealous that Carl's spending so much time with Lydia an d not spending any time with her anymore. And I get it, it's either her missing her best friend, or she's also attracted to him and again, misses spending time with him.

I like the scene with Michonne's group. I also like that she invited Princess to go with her to take out the group of walkers that was near them. I feel like she's giving the other woman a chance, and while I still don't like Princess, maybe this is a good thing.

The conversation between Magna and Yumiko was kind of sad but needed to happen. I like that it was blurted out and not hidden. And I agree that the zombies don't care if you're gay or not, they just want to eat you.

Okay, so Jesus and his partner just left. Huh. I thought that they had already left a few panels back. Apparently not. Well, they're leaving now, and going to the Hilltop. Good. That's much better than them going out on their own.

Well, the conversation between Carl and Sophia needed to happen. Sure, things will never be like it was before, now that he's dating Lydia, but that doesn't mean that he and Sophia can't be friends any longer.

As for Maggie, it's sad that she can't sleep. I've just got a feeling that she's really missing Glenn, struggling with what to do about Dante, and worried about finishing getting the new Hilltop ready as soon as they can.

As much as I know Rick needs to grieve, again, I feel like it's a bit much. I know he misses Andrea, but she wouldn't want him sleeping at her grave, when he has more important things to do.

Aww, Jesus. I like how much he likes him. And it's too bad that one of the Whisperers showed up. I hope that the guy doesn't kill him. Hopefully Jesus will figure it out and kill the other guy instead.

Good issue, and can't wait to read the next.

Overall, this was a good issue - not great, but definitely good. Bit of a bridge in the story, really. Taking us from one place to the next.

I'm conflicted about the way it was jumping from group to group - it was good to push all the plot lines further along but it was also pretty jarring and none of them got to go very far. In particular, we didn't get much more of the Princess character, who of course we only just met last issue.

The other thing I was disappointed with was that the Carl scene/s in this issue were with Lydia, and then Sophia briefly. I was very excited to see him on the cover and hoped for some good stuff with him.
    1. I don't like Lydia.
    2. More than that, I don't like love triangles.
I hope this Lyida-Carl-Sophia doesn't continue to develop into a full blown love triangle. Ugh. (Just kill Lydia off already :P)

Everything was redeemed with the ending though. Oosh! Can't wait for next issue!

Another day on Downton Abbey. This sucks so much. SO much. It's sad.

They're rebuilding Alexandria and apparently we have to see everything of how they're building the whole damn town of theirs with pointless words and dialogue from Carl and some others which add nothing to the damn story or make any progress at all.

Again with the same bullshit we dealt with earlier of Carl wanting to live again and not be in the same place as Rick and Rick being fine with it and what the fuck Kirkman? You're not writing a teenage drama series?! Ugh. It's sad and I'm here waiting for it to be interesting again...

..and at the last page it finally GOT interesting and I hope it continues like that on the next one without giving us a great cliffhanger and disappoint on the next issue!

  • Charlee

Hilltop is in the middle of being rebuilt as the people try to move on.

This is another non-action issue with the people of Hilltop coming together to rebuild and Rick still trying to cope with the loss of Andrea and not faring very well. But that all got put aside when it came to the ending. A cliffhanger that actually made me gasp, I can't wait for next month so I can find out what happens!

  • BrokenMnemonic

I enjoyed this - I like seeing things being built after so long of a scramble to survive. The secondary characters being fleshed out are entertaining, and it feels like forever and a day since Carl and Sophia last talked.

That final page better be a psych-out, though...

  • Joshua

The communities continue to rebuild. Rick sleeps on Andreas grave a lot. Coral is a full blown adult being useful. A group is still heading to Ohio to investigate that radio caller Eugene befriended. Beta bout to kill Jesus.

  • Michael

Maggie is troubled, Carl has women trouble and the group going to Ohio......

  • Salman

Another cliffhanger ending, God bless you, Kirkman

  • Aiya ali

i have to wait a month so i can find out what happened to jesus !!! :/

  • Derek Neveu

A bit on the slow side, but a classic emotional misdirection by the end. Well played Kirkman, well played!

  • Babs

WHY DID HE SAY IT???!!! WHHHYYYYY !!!!!!! WHY TEMPT FATE!!!! AAARGGGG!!!!

  • Sean

This series is officially dead. Completely terrible

  • Caroline

Filler, but much less Princess so that's good.

  • Raven

for all the Magna x Yumiko scenes.I love this couple already !

  • Tiffany

What an ending! Been waiting for this hookup too.

  • Katherine

    No!

I'm going to lose my mind if they kill off that character at the end of the comic. He's one of my favorites. 😰

  • Nicole

    A FAVORITE GRAPHIC NOVEL SERIES'

  • Kathy Ann'tie

Uh, what was that I just saw on the very last page! Watch your back dude.....

  • Robert Grant

Another weak and tepid entry in this series. Maybe I have turned into a zombie and I just don't get it anymore!

  • James Jeans

Communities are rebuilding, romance is blooming, and Princess is doing her own thing. And Carl is too, of course...

  • Manuel Meneses

A pesar de que es importante ver el desarrollo de los personajes de que están en las comunidades, toda la atención está puesta en el viaje de michonne

  • Justin

    A good setting up issue

This issue was more of a leading up issue before some real action. It set the stage for future issues.

  • RJ - Slayer of Trolls

It's always nice to see an old friend...

  • Steven Shinder

There wasn't a lot of action in this one, but the montage of rebuilding was nice. I'm also glad that Carl and Sophia are finally talking again. And that cliffhanger ending has me on edge.
