The Wolf of Kisimul Castle (Highland Isles, #3) Reviews

This one was actually pretty good, even though the beginning premise was a bit weak.
Full disclosure, my enjoyment of this book was definitely enhanced by the superior narration of Tim Campbell. So far, this is my favourite in this series. The other two were pretty convoluted and silly. The heroes in this are pretty interchangeable; brawny, Scottish, rough men with magical dicks. The heroines haven’t been very impressive and their backstories are always so melodramatic. This heroine was different and I think that’s what made this more enjoyable. Though she did *of course* have an almost rape in her backstory (mandatory for this series), she came from a good family and wasn’t harassed and coerced by terrible circumstances. She was very strong and capable, and though she did get rescued, she also did some rescuing of her own. This one had some pretty good smex scenes too, that were swoony and romantic and not too gross.
This was a short listen but pretty enjoyable. -

Mairi Maclean is kidnapped from her clan the day she’s to wed another by Alec, Chief of the Mac Neil clan of Barra Isle. He plans on stealing her off and make her his wife as revenge against Clan MacInnes, for the murder of his own wife. He’s surprised by Mairi demanding a kiss when he barges in to steal her away (there’s a story behind that). The prospect of marrying Mairi becomes sweeter after the passionate kiss they share, but her attitude towards Alec swiftly changes when she realizes he’s come to haul her off to his island. Mairi is outraged when he demands that she marry him or become his prisoner.
Kidnapping would hardly be the way to any woman’s heart, but I was relieved to discover Alec wouldn’t force Mairi to do anything against her will. And hey, this was the 1500’s, so I guess things were a little different back then. Marriages were often entered into as a political alliance, with or without the consent of the woman. But Mairi was no pushover. She dug her heels at the idea, but getting to know Alec softened her up; especially witnessing the love and care he had for his kids. Mairi can’t help the powerful attraction she feels for Alec regardless of how she ended up at Kisimul Castle.
I had an open mind about Alec, and he didn’t disappoint. I fell for hard for this soft-hearted warrior and I even liked him a little more than Mairi. Alec had a vulnerable side to him; worried that anyone he loved would leave or be taken from him. He had good reasons to worry. There was a fair bit of tension by the end, Alec’s wife’s murder isn’t all what it seemed, and the mystery behind it ended up bringing danger to the clan!
Heather McCollum brought Alec and Mairi to life, made me care about them. I felt their emotions: fear, uncertainty, passion, and love. I do love a good historical romance with a sexy highlander. They’re usually a lot of fun, but I was pleased that The Wolf of Kisimul Castle was more.

3½ stars.
➕ What I liked :
Scottish hero.
Scottish setting.
The dogs.
The heroine was not naive/innocent and clueless/ignorant about her own body and sex.
OK romantic build-up.
OK chemistry.
The hero never touched the heroine forcefully/roughly.
(If you disregard the kidnapping part of the story)
The heroines way with the children.
The kids in the story were rather sweet and brave.
Resilient heroine.
➖ What I disliked:
Contradictory character description about the heroine.
(In some descriptions of the heroine she is described as being full of curves or/and having soft full curves and full breasts and being “soft”and lush… in other descriptions she is described as having a lithe body with slender arms and legs and a narrow waist and flat stomach… which is it?)
Dragged in some parts.
Somewhat formulaic. -
Reread on 1/30/2021: Went up 1 star. Although I didn’t enjoy this book as much as the first two books, I did add a star, because the H/h made love under the stars twice. Missionary the first time then doggy style the second time. (Is there a more professional term for that position?)
First review on 6/28/2020: Nothing too original to set it apart from the other highlander HRs I've read. I skimmed the last couple of chapters. -
Aaahhhhh
That was awesome. I loved Mairi, the heroine. She was so sassy and strong and beautiful and kind. I loved how she took that dungeon room and made it her own. That was hilarious. The kids were so awesome too. And the dogs. I love dogs and this guy loved dogs too. He was a great hero. He kidnapped her and found his heart. It was so sweet. There are bad people though plotting dastardly deeds but who are they and what do they want? You have to read to find out. And I loved loved loved the ending too. Definitely love this author. Safe too. -

Wit and Sin
Alec MacNeil has a simple plan for revenge: kidnap his enemy’s bride on her wedding day and marry her himself. But Mairi Maclean is no wilting flower. She challenges him, tempts him, and isn’t about to give in and marry some man just because he says so. But even though she’s his captive, it’s not long before Mairi is breathing new life into Alec’s home. And the longer the two of them are around one another, the more difficult it becomes for them to resist their mutual attraction…
The Wolf of Kisimul Castle is one of the most fun books I’ve read in a long time. I can’t count the number of times Mairi and Alec made me grin and Heather McCollum’s writing just plain charmed the heck out of me.
Mairi is a strong, resourceful woman who isn’t afraid to speak her mind. When taken captive she doesn’t faint with fright, but defies Alec and makes herself comfortable in his dungeon. I loved Mairi’s cleverness, attitude, and warm heart. Kisimul Castle is a dark and depressing place when she arrives and she – along with Alec’s adorable children – turn it into a home. As for Alec, though he’s determined to avenge his wife’s murder, he’s no monster. He’s a kind and loving father and a leader who wants to do what’s best for his people. I adored both Alec and Mairi, which made it easy to become invested in their love story. Their romance is lively and fun; every part of it crackles with energy. The sparks that fly from their first meeting keep flying all through the book which made this a wonderfully satisfying romance.
Some books just make you happy when you read them, and that’s definitely the case for me with The Wolf of Kisimul Castle. This is the first book of Ms. McCollum’s that I’ve read and her style reminded me of vintage Julie Garwood. I couldn’t have been more entertained by Mairi and Alec’s story and I cannot wait to go back and read Ms. McCollum’s first two Highland Isles tales!
FTC Disclosure: I received this book for free from the publisher in exchange for an honest review. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review. -
I jumped into The Wolf of Kisimul Castle without having read the first two books in the Highland Isles series with no problems at all. The story for Alec and Mairi stands completely on it's own. Although the plot is simple and straight forward, I still enjoyed seeing the story unfold. There is a good balance between the inevitable romance between Mairi and Alec and the trouble that led Alec to kidnap her and the fall out and action that takes place afterward. McCollum provides enough tension between Mairi and Alec to help make their burgeoning relationship interesting, but without making their actions and decisions unbelievable or unrelatable.
Mairi isn't stubborn to the point that she is reckless, and Alec isn't overbearing to the point that he is a jerk and unlikable, which is a bonus when it comes to historical romance. It is nice that Mairi isn't an overly innocent virginal heroine trying to escape a horrible situation. Instead, she is a widow, who is doing what she initially feels is best for her family, even if it's not an exciting prospect for her personally.
The Wolf of Kisimul Castle is a quick historical romance that provided an enjoyable reading escape to another time and place. It's been a little while since I have read a historical romance, and I'm glad that I picked this one up.

Overall I enjoyed the story. I liked Mairi, she was pretty smart and resilient. I did not love Alec, but he was ok. I hate the dead ex trope so it detracted from my enjoyment. Not that she was talked about a lot, but she was the reason he stole Mairi and had only died a few months (maybe close to a year) prior; so she was ever-present. It is a personal preference issue and one I find difficult to look past.
The kids were cute and sweet. But I thought their relationship with their dad was kinda sad. And I just did not see enough improvement there to make me increase my score. That and how long it took for the MCs to be anything real also kept my score down.
Safety Gang -
Vengeance with a twist.
Scottish Highlands 1523.
Mairi Maclean knew that marriages were clan alliances, no matter that her first marriage went badly. Now widowed, she's again decided to marry for clan. Just before her wedding she learned that her fiancé intended to send a handsome friend to kiss her. If she enjoyed the kiss she might break off the wedding. Not that Mairi was going to do that! As she sad though, “Drunken plans should not be made the night before weddings!”
But did her fiancé have to send someone so handsome? When Mairi kissed the stranger she almost swooned. Still, the wedding would continue Mairi decided even as the stranger was leading her out ... and away, wait a minute, to where? Oops drunken plans certainly played into the hands of Alec MacNeil!
Mairi found herself captive to Alec, clan chief known as The Wolf of Kisimul Castle! Alec has decided to take vengeance against those who murdered his wife and Mairi was the widow of his enemy!
The pages devoted to Mairi being held captive are hilarious. I would give the book five stars just for those pages of mischief. The relationship with Alec's children, the transition unbeknownst to him of dank dungeon to something other, is brilliant. Mairi and the children become a formidable team that it takes Alec some time to become aware of.
I loved this story. Marie is a treat, feisty and full of life despite the shadow of fear that hung over her from her treatment at the hands of her former husband and his family.
Alec is a man of honor, trying to keep his clan and family together, and yet so young in understanding relationships, hampered as he is by his seemingly lacklustre upbringing. All the women in his life leave the castle in someway, and yet he remains to carry on a tradition.
Neither of them dreamed where things would lead.
This definitely is the highlight of the series, humorous and heartfelt.

I really loved this book !
A bride for a bride. Alec McNeil had revenge on his mind when he kidnapped Mairi Maclean. The lonely highlander found his perfect match in fiesty spitfire Mairi. I adored this charming couple and the quick witted banter that flew between them, and Alec's children were adorable.
This was a very romantic story that had everything it needed to keep me captivated. The characters were amazing and the plot was emotional. It even had a couple of twists and some suspense. The author delivered a wonderfully written romance that has me looking forward to more of her books.
I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary Netgalley copy of this book. -
'The Wolf of Kisimul Castle by Heather McCollum is Book Three in the "Highland Isles" series. This is the story of Mairi Maclean and Alec MacNeil. I have read the other book in this series (and LOVED THEM!) but feel this can easily be a standalone book.
Mari first marriage was for family alliance, which turned out very bad. Mari first husband was an older and hateful man. Whose son mistreated her when he was away. But now her husband is dead and she has returned to her brother. Tor Maclean (who we met in the first book). But now Mari has willing agreed to marry again for family alliances but this time she thinks that it a safe choice. But she is taken by Alec before she can marry.
Alec has two children who are left with no mother after Mairi husband killed his wife, In addition, the clan and neighboring towns people feel that his Castle is cursed. So most of the house workers are gone and the Castle is falling apart inside. So Alec thinks a Wife For a Wife and takes Mairi. But Mairi is a headstrong women who isn't easily talked into going along with his command of Marriage.
I so enjoyed this book and this series! Ms. McCollum has a way to make you feel apart of the story. I love watching Mairi build a relationship with the kids who were sad and neglected. Mari truly became the heart of Kisimul Castle! I also love with you have such great secondary characters that you hope you will see more of them soon in another story!!
Just Loved it!!

Heather McCollum has done it again, my fellow Scottish romance book-loving friends. Book 3, The Wolf of Kisimul Castle, was just as intriguing and engaging as the previous two books in her Highland Isles series.
Honestly, I can’t think of a single thing I didn’t love about this romantic tale. Alec, the hero, played his role perfectly as the lone wolf, widowed laird struggling to raise two children in a mostly abandoned castle many claim to be cursed. Surprisingly his knucklehead act of revenge backfired in a verra surprising way. Mairi, the feisty, sassy heroine, may have been the captive here, but she certainly soon captured Alec’s lonesome heart. Yeah, this bonny lass gave as good as she got. She constantly kept him on his toes and wondering what she was bloody well up to next. I loved her feistiness, kind heartedness, and willingness to put her life on the line to save those she loved. She also gets a high five from me for holding out until the halfway mark before becoming intimate with him.
If you haven’t read the previous books, well, I suggest you get right on that. Cameo appearances of main characters from those books appear in this one and add to the sense of family and drama as a heated, intense, life threatening scenario unfolds near the end.
Overall, I give this one a loud wolf whistle and a big round of applause for being so delightfully entertaining, folks. Here’s to hoping you’ll feel the same.

This is the first book I've read by Heather McCollum and it didn't disappoint. This book was different than most of the Historical Romances that I typically come across. It's rare to stumble upon a historical romance written in the 1500's, at least for me; most of the books I pick up are anywhere from the late 1700's to the late 1800's. Yes, she's taken hostage which is kinda common in historical romances but what's different is, Alec gives her pretty much 100% freedom once she's at castle Kisimul, considering the story takes place in 1523, I think that's pretty rare.
Also, you don't have to have read the previous books in this series to enjoy this one, which is a plus considering this is the third book in this series. That being said, let's get into what I liked & didn't like about this one...
What I Liked:
The Relationship Development- Mairi & Alec had an undeniable chemistry. In the beginning, there's a scene that I thought was pretty cute. Without giving anything away it involves their first kiss. After that, it's one of my favorite tropes, a enemies-to-lovers relationship. Now, let's delve a little deeper into the enemies-to-lovers trope in this story... In the beginning there was quite a bit of snark and an I'm not gonna take that kind of treatment from you thing going on, which I really admired about Mairi! (Can you imagine, it's 1523 and well...women weren't treated as they are nowadays.) Then as time went on and Alex & Mari grew to know each other it slowly went from snarky to humorous, they both had me laughing out loud. I loved their undeniable chemistry I mentioned above. Once they were comfortable with each other things heated up quite a bit and they were adorable together!
The Characters- Not only did I love Alec & Mairi but I just adored Alec's children Weylyn & Cinnia. Alec is such a good father and it was heartening to see his love for his children throughout the story.
The Setting- This story takes place in Scotland, the year of 1523. What I absolutely loved was the castle actually exists! There's a scene that takes place on a beach with wildflowers and the beautiful way in which it was written really brought it to life; I felt like I was there with the cool breeze hitting my cheek, the biting cold waves with that salty tang in the air plus the fragrant smell of wildflowers in the air!
All-in-All- A unique historical romance with snark, humor, and swoons! Oh and an action-packed ending that will leave you on the edge of your seat! -
I received a copy of this e-book and am voluntarily leaving an honest review.
Mairi, who is a widow, is about to marry again. No love involved, it's a marriage of political gain. That wedding is about to be interrupted...
Alec has come to kidnap a bride and that bride is Mairi. The man Mairi is to marry is responsible for the death of Alec's wife so in Alec's eyes, a bride for a bride. So he kidnaps Mairi and brings her back to Kisimul Castle.
Will Mairi consent to be his bride and share his life? Will there be retribution?
I really loved this story! I didn't want to put it down once I started reading it. The flow of the story is great and I was pulled right into it.
Mairi is not a pushover and she does not have a problem expressing her opinion. Alec really is a good man. He doesn't look for war he only wants to live on his land and keep his people happy. As Mairi gets to know him she realizes he is not the man he portrayed himself as when he kidnapped her.
Kisimul Castle is said to be cursed also, will this finally be proven true or untrue?
I would recommend this story for anyone who is a Highlander story fan! -
The Wolf of Kisimul Castle by Heather McCollum
Highland Isles Series #3
Another stellar story from Heather McCollum! I loved Mairie and Alec and the story of their wooing. That first scene, the kiss, the kidnapping and along the way saving a few dogs…all in the name of revenge – a bride for a bride – right – that is what Alec thinks as he kidnaps Mairie and steals her away on her wedding day taking her to Kisimul Castle with plans to take her as his wife.
The introduction was superb. Meeting Alec’s friends, family and children a delight and the interaction Mairie has with each person she meets always entertaining. Alec and Mairie do eventually begin to like one another and their relationship heats up but with her family looking for her, a baddie on the prowl, intrigue and an impostor creating trouble it is not easy sailing for either hero or heroine. What was once considered cursed by some is found to be the heart of Kisimul by another and to that person it becomes a haven rather than a prison. With the love Alec and Mairie feel for one another only good things are foreseen for them, Alec’s son and daughter and the MacNeil Clan.
Thank you to NetGalley and Entangled Publishing for the ARC – This is my honest review.
5 Stars -
I LOVED The Wolf of Kisimul Castle than the previous 2 books in the series. This one is a standalone and worth reading.
From the beginning, the story captured my heart. The story line kept me hooked till the end.
I have never read any of Heather's books before but I really enjoyed this one.
Thumbs up!!! -
Loved it!
-
The book was good, except the kidnapping part, her being a prisoner, etc. This book was a great change from other kidnapped heroine books, (e.g.
Captive Bride by Johanna Lindsey). The hero never touched her forcefully or roughly. I don't like the hero kidnaps heroine and they fall in love theme. Except that theme, this book was ABSOLUTELY amazing!
Alec did kidnap her from her home, but he himself went back and let her brother know where she is to set her free after she made plain she does not want to be a prisoner. Mairi is a great heroine. I did like her, but I liked Ava from book 1 of this series more. -
**I voluntarily read a review copy of this book. All opinions stated are solely my own and no one else's*
5 stars
This is the first book I've read by this author and I wasn't left disappointed. The Wolf of Kisimul Castle was fun, entertaining with plenty of drama to keep you hooked.
Mairi was fiery, sassy yet a stubborn heroine. She's determined not to wed her sexy captor even though his bulging muscles make her mouth literally water lol. Mairi was definitely one of a kind - she doesn't sit in the dungeon weeping - nope she turns her prison cell into a luxury bedroom lol.
Alex may have kidnapped Mairi but he doesn't force himself on her or force her to marry him. He's captivated by Mairi's beauty and their first kiss that left him breathless and aching.
Alex and Mairi had amazing chemistry throughout. Their romantic retreat under the stars was breathtaking, beautiful and sexy.
The unfolding events at the end had my heart racing. I couldn't put the book down and I didn't want to which explains why I devoured the book within a few hours.
Alex kidnapped Mairi because he wanted revenge but he finds someone who steals his heart, body, and mind instead.
Absolutely loved this one - the characters were amazing and complemented each other really well. I'm definitely adding this author to my favourite list. -
This book series from the very first story, has been truly rapturous and exhilarating to read, and The Wolf Of Kisimul Castle by Heather McCollum has the outstanding series continuing. Focussing on Mairi and Alec's characters, the story has action, cheekiness, romance and scorching moments that manage to ensnare readers attentions and hold them captive to the dialogue in the story. A complete draw-card of a read. The Wolf Of Kisimul Castle is the third instalment in the Highland Isles series - a series not to miss.

I loved this book, it really made me laugh.
The children are really funny along with a strong heroine and a surly hero whose friends make constant jibes at.
Very entertaining. -

Scottish Highlands, 1523
It was supposed to be Mairi Maclean’s wedding day. No, she did not love her betrothed Geoff, the new MacInnes chief, since her elderly husband Fergus MacInnes death. That marriage was forced by her father, now her brother Tor is chief. Tor explains, Mairi does not have to marry anyone except for love. She feels the ties with their clans would make them so much stronger. Mairi knew her insecure groom - was sending his most handsome warrior to kiss her as a test. If she really wanted to marry him she would still meet him down the aisle. So when the most strapping, handsome, warrior she ever met gave her the most passionate kiss of her life! What is she to do? Than she realizes a decision has been made for her. Her warrior escort is taking her in the opposite direction of the chapel!
The man Mairi mistakenly took as one of Geoff’s men is actually their enemy! It isLaird Alec MacNeil, known as the Wolf and Chieftain of Kisimul. A man who decided he was going to get his revenge. Even though Fergus is dead, but he killed his wife, so he will replace her with a new wife, Fergus’s wife. An eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth, a bride for a bride, all is fair in love and war! Plus Alex needs someone to mind his children besides his close warriors friends and dogs. It was a shame Fergus MacInnes was already dead or he would of run him through. It was only fair, yet Mairi is not the docile lamb he was expecting! Nor can she be forced to do anything against her feisty, independent, will! Alex thinks a week in his dark dungeon will change her mind. Mairi does take notice of her abductor, who is kind to dogs, extremely gentle and caring with her person.
Laird Alex takes her to his rundown empty cursed Kisimul Castle, the Castle everyone thinks is cursed and leaves. Everyone leaves except his children and a couple of his men. As many believe in the curse especially after his wife was murdered. His own mother deserted him as a teenager, thank God Millie cared for him.
When Mairi refuses his marriage offer he thinks a week in the dungeon will change her mind. He doesn't realize his own children betrayed him, giving her all the comforts of a Queen! Then the tides change as Mairi starts to feel things for this gentle giant. Also his motherless children, his young son gives his puppy so she won't feel alone. His daughter Mairi gives cooking tips and the young lass makes her flower crowns. So she can't help feel anything but love for the wolf’s young children . Even the puppy his son gave her she has grown to love.
Plus the location of Kisimul Castle is inescapable so what can Mairi possibly do. Yet her brother Tor is searching for . She has no doubts her family will discover her whereabouts sooner or later. Will she stay or leave like everyone else? Readers will have to read this dazzling, memorable, story that is absolutely breathtaking and unforgettable!
Again, Heather McCollum pens another remarkable riveting action packed novel, that readers won't be able to put down. This is the third book in her magnificent “Highland Isles” series. It has all the elements Scottish-historical-romance-reader’s love! It includes a swoon worthy hero, stubborn, independent and kind
beautiful heroine. If you're a dog lover like myself you will absolutely love this novel. Any mother will love Alec’s motherless children too. There are many facets and parts to this novel that had me totally captivated and mesmerized! It totally melted my heart!
This book brought so many emotions out of me from laughter to heart tugging moments as well. A beautiful superbly written novel that readers won't be able to forget. Definitely one for your keeper shelf to re-read. I found it a total delight! I highly recommend this as you can read as a stand alone or in series order. It is always such an enormous treat when I see a new “Heather McCollum” release.

Ugh, Kids
I do not like kids in my romances. I think they ruin the chemistry. Because this is my personal taste and not a reflection on the writing or story I still gave the book 5stars. Apart from the children this was a very good book. I liked Alec, he was sweet and sexy. Mairi was a little boring, but I liked her ability to make the best out of every situation. Their romance was sweet and well developed. I liked the drama of the ending.
I have read everything published by Heather McCollum and there isn’t a book of hers I didn’t like. I highly recommend her books and especially this series. WARNING: there is sex in this book, it is not erotica, but enough to be a steamy & hot adult romance. Please do not read if you are looking for something PG. Romance-4/5 Steaminess-3/5 Explicitness-3/5 -
Mairi’s intelligent wit and sassy grace paired well with Alec’s bossy nature and tempered vulnerability. And the romantic appeal had me sighing..I loved their attraction! Spicy from the start, their relationship blossomed-a few thorns had to be picked through of course-but things eventually turned into a beautiful ending. The secondary characters were just as bold! Alec’s kids were a hoot, as were his cousins, and Millie was a silent rock of support. All of them provided support, shenanigans, and hilarity when I least expected. Alec and Mairi’s book is definitely my favorite of this series!
