Secret Invasion: Runaways/Young Avengers Reviews

A big event tie in book that actually makes sense to have. Both the Runaways and the Young Avengers have members who are skrulls. Since Secret Invasion is about skrulls invading earth, this makes complete sense. The other members of the teams get very little page time. This isn't a bad story, but there's no real resolution. They fight one guy and then it's over but it's not really clear how this fits back into the main book. The art is OK, but a little too much manga influence for me. The characters looked a little too cutesy at times.

  • Sesana

Well, it was ok, but it was hardly interesting. It just seems like two teams (maybe the only two?) who have regular Skrull members should have been a much more important part of the Skrull invasion, instead of being pushed off to the sidelines. Likely not necessary for the Secret Invasion storyline. And since I have no intention of reading Secret Invasion, I'm pleased to note that it isn't necessary to get what's going on here. What's there to understand? Skrulls invade, because that's basically what Skrulls do. Right? I doubt this event will even be remembered in a few more years, and it doesn't seem necessary to read this book even if you are trying to follow Young Avengers and Runaways. Quick note: you should probably read at least
Runaways, Vol. 8: Dead End Kids to get what's going on here.

My West Coast Avengers obsession lead to a Scarlet Witch obsession which has lead to an obsession with her son, Wiccan, and that lead me to read this, The Young Avengers. This was my first encounter with the team, and in this graphic novel they are also paired with a group called "The Runaways," which was way too many characters for me to keep track of for a first time reader! I started with this book because it was the first one the library had available. I liked what I understood, and look forward to reading more.

    Solid.

World: The art is fine. It's stylish and fun making this pleasing to the eye. It's not the best, but it did it's job well. I hate tie in books but this was handled well. It feeds off the main story but also made it a personal tale to the character by setting up a world that mattered to the Runaways and Young Avengers. Solid.

Story: Deceptively emotional. Having Xavin and Hulkling in the story really grounded the story emotionally and made for a better story. This three issue arc moves fast and is written well. For a tie in its good.

Characters: Xavin and Hulkling take center stage and it makes sense. They have a lot of space to show character and it's done well. The rest of the cast are also very good with little character moments that match their series.

A good fun tie in read.

    Onward to the next book!

I enjoy both teams of characters in here, but unfortunately neither group stood out in this mini colab. Trying to have a whole invasion, backstory for the invasion, and giving all the characters from the Young Avengers and Runaways enough screen time in a trade that's less than 100 pages is a pretty hard feat. One that didn't quite hit the nail on the head in this.

Both teams have quite a few characters with big personalities, so these cross overs never really do justice to any of them. Still, it was an enjoyable read. Very quick and short, which is the main down side, but the art was fine, the story arc shoved in as much as possible to do with the Skrulls and why they were invading. The fight scenes also suffered a little from the length, big moments happened off screen and we never really got a resolution.

All in all a fine read if you're fans of the teams and want a bit of extra content, but don't expect a deep delve into any of the characters.

Mostly plot, very little character development. Not much of the quirky charm usually associated with either group of teen superheroes. Sigh.

  • Hannah Givens

Another tie-in crossover with decent plot, script, etc., just not enough room to be a great story in itself.

As far as I understood what was happening, this was good. It sparked some interest in the Young Avengers that I may eventually act on. Or not.
There was a very helpful section at the end that provided detailed histories of all the players, and with that, I’ve finally gotten enough review on the Runaways.
More and more, I feel like I would need to dedicate my life to all things Marvel to follow every connection portrayed in these books. And I’m not planning to do that. But I think now I’m armed with enough backstory to follow the newest Runaways arc at least.
I like the humor, especially Molly’s and Chase’s lines—“spazgardian” was my favorite play on words this round—and that it stays fairly consistent regardless of changing writers. To be honest, I actually do have fun with the crossover stuff. But I feel like if I follow all the threads to other series, I’ll be doing it forever. I know for now I’ll continue to follow the Runaways, and I’m going to keep an eye on Kate Bishop too.

    Secret Invasion: Runaways & Young Avengers (#1-#3): ⭐⭐⭐⭐.5 (4.5/5)

It was a nice nice story, even though it's too short and it left me in suspense at the end. But well, I really liked it. And the art in this one omg, it's so beautiful, I'm in love with the style of the eyes, it reminds me of anime idk why.
I'm always glad to read crossovers between Young Avengers and the Runaways I wish there were more.

    Puntaje: 3.6 Estrellas
En cuanto a la historia, it was just fine, tĂpico Tie-In de Secret Invasion.

i don’t think the runaways are ever written to their full potential in these crossover events. focusing on the 2 parties really does a disservice to both the young avengers and the runaways. also the artist did teddy SO dirty.

  • James DeSantis

Aa good a tie in as you can hope for. Secret Invasion wasn't one of my favorite events, but I liked Teddy being kind of the main plot point here being the half Skrull. It's never boring with plenty of action, but due to that, I don't get much interaction from the teams like the last team up, sadly.

A lot just happened very quickly. That’s what I get for reading tie ins before the actual event

Took a whole star down because the illustration wasn’t what I was used to and the characters were kinda unrecognisable and it just icked me wrong :/

its not bad but..... waste of time sorry :S

I get the feeling that Marvel doesn't know what to do with the Young Avengers, and the Runaways storyline was kind of played out by this point, so these crossovers are not as good in practice as they are in theory. It's a shame because they should be a lot more fun than they are.

  • Devero

i loved xavin on this one so much

The story was fine, but the conclusion was well. Inconclusive.

not bad, in fact i really enjoyed it because i love this runaways/young avengers crossovers. i wish this had been longer though.

I thought this book was an interesting backstory of Xavin. Honestly, I feel like all the Young Avenger/Runaway team-ups center around the Runaways. Not that I'm complaining, especially since I only read them for the Runaways, but if it's to be a mash-up, then it should really be balanced. I guess technically it was only a small, extremist religious faction of the Skrull that decided to invade Earth, but I don't know that they'll ever gain my approval. Though, I have to admit that Xavin has come pretty far. In the beginning, she didn't care for anything but the treaty between Karolina and her, and now she cares for all the Runaways and considers Earth her home. That's some serious progress. It seems like it's going to take a while to accustom Klara to the 21st century. Poor thing is completely out of her element. However, she really proved herself when she grew a tree that threw up X'Iv. I feel bad for Teddy. I hate that his supposed "prophecy" keeps coming back to haunt him. Can't he just live his life in peace? I mean, Xavin went a little too far on calling Teddy out about not being the savior. Just because she and Karolina put the fate of worlds above their own lives doesn't mean that Teddy has to. He never asked to be half Skrull, he never asked for any of it. Can't he just be a normal Hulking and live out his days with Billy? Oh, by the way, even though I don't read the Young Avengers, I think I've totally and completely gotten on board the Teddy and Billy ship. They're just so cute together. How can you not? I understand Xavin wanting to send the Runaways as far away from the fighting as possible, but I don't blame Karolina for being pissed. I get that the Skrull hate the Majesdanians, but X'Iv calling Karolina a tramp took it too far and I was glad to see him obliterated. All in all, it was fun to see the Young Avengers back in action with the Runaways, even if it only focused on Tommy, Billy, and Teddy. I recommend this book to those seeking peace.
