Everything that happens from now on is act two stuff, so spoilers for how this series develops beyond the initial situation.

At the end of the first volume, our assertive protagonist, drenched under the rain, went to the family restaurant she works at and declared her love for the forty five year old manager she's inexplicably infatuated with. The guy spent the following days trying to make sense of why this elegant, beautiful high schooler that works for him would have said such a thing. He believes this is some kind of prank, that another seventeen years old worker of his must have been recording it on his phone. Although he's a bit resentful of such a cruel act upon his emotions (he thinks, 'even though I'm an old guy, I can still cry'), when the protagonist returns to work she clarifies that she was serious about being in love with him, and she awaits his response. The following days are even worse for the manager, because he knows that allowing himself to want this high schooler would end his life. More importantly, though, he also doesn't want to recall his youth, as he had to leave his passion and ambitions behind. He describes himself as "an empty middle-aged man".

The manager decides to drive the protagonist to her bus stop, but along the way he proposes they take a walk through a park. He focuses on making her realize that she shouldn't love him, or believe that she's in love with him, because not only he's a much older man, there's also nothing about him that would attract anybody. She emphasizes that she doesn't need reasons, she's simply in love and that's that. Although he mentions going on a date to emphasize how ridiculous they would look as a couple, she pushes for him to take her out one of these days, and he reluctantly agrees.

Meanwhile at work we learn a bit more about a playboy, college-age coworker of the protagonist. At one point he catches her studying for her English exam, and she allows him to read through her textbook. She realizes too late that she shouldn't have, because she had scribbled teenagey stuff about her crush for the manager on the margins. He asks for the college-age guy not to tell anyone, but he suggests that his silence requires going on a date with him. He takes her to see a movie, a parody version of
"I Am a Hero" (a series that I loved despite its ending), and afterwards to get some drinks. The college-age dude mocks the protagonist for her bad taste in men, because he finds it gross, and she gets furious. The forced date ends up so poorly that she clearly doesn't want to have anything to do with this guy from now on.

The manager takes the protagonist out on a date, starting with watching the same movie the other guy had dragged her to watch. Terrible idea to watch a movie on your first date. Afterwards they go out for coffee, and the manager acts awkward and even older than he is as if to disuade the protagonist from pursuing him further, although he's probably just that much of a mess. By the end, the manager is sure that this teenager who inexplicably loves him must have considered that the date was as boring as they came, and she had been saved from her troublesome infatuation, but she decides to kiss him on the cheek as a goodbye.

This whole deal of having a teenager pursuing him romantically is fucking with the manager's mind, who looks more and more disheveled. An afternoon that he wasn't working at the restaurant, his son, who is a child, goes there to show him some hamster the kid wanted his father to have. When he realizes that his father isn't working that day, he says he's going to his father's place by himself. The protagonist takes the opportunity to discover where the guy lives, as well as to earn further points by helping his son.

The manager lives in one of those dreary, one-story apartments that are common in manga and anime to signify that a character is as broke and hopeless as they come. The manager isn't home, but the protagonist goes in and takes the chance to learn more about the guy's life through the stuff he keeps. She discovers his study, where manuscripts lie around as if he still writes often (first glimpse we got in the story so far that the manager is a failed writer). The child is hungry, so the protagonist prepares him some food, and when the manager finally comes home, the protagonist hides in a wardrobe as the guy tastes her food, and doesn't particularly like it.

If this was one of Shūzō Oshimi's stories, I would have expected the protagonist's shady actions to delve into some fucked up psychological horror stuff, but in this story the girl is just someone finding meaning in her infatuation with this guy, because the rest of her life has become meaningless now that her passion has been forcefully extinguished.

This series is a real pleasure to read, and maintains its quality consistently so far (and will keep doing so, even though I remember little of the anime adaptation). It doesn't hurt that the protagonist looks real good too. 2D > 3D.

The English title of this series is "After The Rain", and it's well deserved as it's setting is in the midst of rainy season. There is indeed a lot of rain related imagery.

Would have rated it higher if it wasn't for that one dude and how he forced the MC to go on a date so he wouldn't tell anyone about her love for the manager. :|

Sie hat es ihm gesagt (s. Band 1).

So Akira was serious about her confession and Masami doesn’t know what to do. Even though he perfectly understands the awkwardness of the situation his mind lingers on his lost youth and his heart kinda skips a bit. A date is on the way...

Some humour in this volume too, with Yui as an improvised beautician and a whole chapter from Takashi’s enamored point of view. This makes a counterpoint to the introduction of a rather despicable character.

And to wrap it up there’s this beautiful scenes filled with tangible emotion, like when Akira takes a glimpse of Masami’s bedroom through its ajar door. Simple, elegant and efficient.

I loved that volume and decided to binge-read the series there and then (I did).
This volume focuses on friendships: Yui from the restaurant cuts Akira's hair, Kase (the playboy from the restaurant) tricks Akira into going on a date with her (but I can tell there a hidden good side to him, I've read enough shôjô to know that), we get to see a little more of Yoshizawa who has a crush on Akira, it's a lot of fun! We're also introduced to the super important character: Yuuto's hamster (and everybody warms up to the boss as a result, it was heartwarming). Very sweet story.

  • Kristin ✨

Not a huge fan of how poorly the manger is shutting this down. He points out that it's wrong, he gets embarrassed when people see then together and he knows that she has feeling for him. Yet he still offers to drive her home, agrees to go on a date? It's aligned with his characteristics yet how can he go along with everything knowing it can't turn out in any favourable way? It feels like he is just being strung along so he himself can gain back some confidence and feel good with himself. Leaves a yucky feeling.

Yet I have to say that's it a very engaging story and I keeps dragging me in.

Lui... non so...

  • Cookie

I loved it. It's pretty clear we are not going for an ending with the two of them together which makes me even more interested to know where this is going and how this will develop.

The one thing which rubbed me the wrong way in this volume was the creep who blackmailed her.

Aside from this, it was great. Especially liked how the two dates were mirrored.

  • Marc

  • Medusa :)

This volume was just like wtf. Kase is a perv and the boss is weird like it seems like he has feelings for the 17 y/o too and he seems like a perv. I’m just mad cause I heard that this series wasn’t creepy and stuff, but nah it is.

There is a glitch in the covers of the English titles so adding this one(with the correct cover) to my list.
Thoughts:I'm conflicted about how I really feel so curious to see how the story unfolds in the upcoming volumes.
