Cecelia is escaping Boston and is friends with Martha, who sent another young lady to Kirkham. Cee is a nurse and widow, who needs to escaped her in-laws before they have her falsely committed to an asylum. She and her 5 yr old daughter head to Kirkham to work for the doctor there.
Arriving in Kirkham, it is clear to Cecelia that Marta, who has been filling in as the doctor's assistant is in love with the man. Cecelia has no interest in marrying again, so she calms Marta down and they become friends.
However, Cecelia pledge to give up marriage changes when she meets the stable owner Sam and his five yr old daughter Julia. The young girls are quick friends, and they soon form a family for evening dinners and child care when each needs to work.
