I read this primarily for the fiction pieces and loved both the fully developed world of "Nice" and the terrifying realism of the merpeople in "The Mussel Eater". In "Nice", Yukiko's need for every aspect of her life to be precisely in order seems to be part of what makes things that are out of place immediately apparent to her, making her that much better at her job. It was interesting to see a character who was choosing to be true to herself—to actively be a nice person—when her career is so less-than-nice. "The Mussel Eater" had a frame of control as well, with Karitoki's attempts to change the Pania, and the consequences of facing reality in light of his choices. And then there was "Nini". I read it a week ago, and am still thinking about it. The imagery at the end is powerful and unsettling.
