There is a lot going on in this one. When I started, I thought the love life of the main character was complicated... and it sure is, but so is the case. There were several times I had to highlight a name to remember who a certain character was. There's a very helpful character list and glossary of English slang at the end of the book. I read many books set in the UK and understand most if not all, but I think it's a fantastic idea. This story moves along quickly without sacrificing detail and definitely managed to stun me a few times. While it's part of a series, I read it as a standalone and other than some brief moments of confusion, it worked just fine.
Tyrone Swift used to be a police detective, but now he's a private investigator. It's clear that he sustained an injury that led to the new career path, but we aren't given much detail. We do find out immediately that he has a four month old daughter... with his married ex-fiance. They've just found out that the child is deaf or close to. The baby lives with her mother and her ailing husband, and Swift doesn't get to see her quite as often as he'd like. He dotes on her when he does, however. He shows interest in dating but very clearly still loves the unavailable mother of his child.
Swift has been contacted with a new case: a man who had his baby kidnapped several years ago has started to receive taunting emails. They're incredibly vague, but somewhat sinister in nature. Thomas Maddox is still grieving the loss of his son, and has experienced a string of incidents that may or may not be chalked up to just plain bad luck. That one terrible day destroyed his marriage and his life. He has little money, but his grandfather Gabe Maddox is well-off... an incredibly successful businessman who is paying Swift. He also seems to be a professional jerk. I enjoyed the parts of the story he was in because I never knew what he would do or say next, but was never a fan.
The emails begin to get more and more specific and venomous. This anonymous sender seems to know an awful lot about Thomas and the entire Maddox family... and even Swift. No one knows if baby Oscar is still alive or was killed shortly after he was kidnapped.
Not only must Swift deal with his ex and the life he wanted for his daughter changing, he's in the dark about the case. I really enjoyed reading about his lovely relationship with his little girl and the inner workings of his mind trying to solve the case before anyone gets hurt. This is a story filled with many interesting and multi-faceted characters and it really kept me guessing.
I received an ARC of this book from Net Galley and Joffe Books, thank you! My review is honest and unbiased. -

Thomas Maddox's six month old son had been kidnapped two years ago. The boy has never been found. Now someone is watching Thomas and sending him dark emails. The police won't do anymore so Thomas's wealthy grandfather hires Tyrone Swift to try and shed some light on the case. Swift is an ex police detective but will he be able to solve this case of family secrets and pain? Will they find the child alive?
There is a second background story concerning Sift who has his own family problems. This is a gripping, well written and fast paced book. It has many curve balls thrown into the mix to keep you guessing, and guess you will right to the very end. I was hooked from the start.
I would like to thank Joffe Books and the author Greta Mulrooney for my ARC in exchange for an honest review. -
Tyrone Swift is an ex-police detective, now working as a Private Investigator. He's got quite a background ...he got stabbed which meant he could no longer function as a detective. He had a lady friend who had his child, but she's married to another man. His infant daughter, they have found, in deaf. And though he will always love the mother of his child, he's really tempted by police detective Nora Morrow.
A man has called Tyrone and wants to hire him to find his son, who was abducted 2 years ago. The police investigated and questioned hundreds of people, followed all the leads that presented themselves, but it still remains unsolved and the child is still missing.
The child's father, Thomas, has started receiving strange emails. They allude to his missing son, and they seem to be threatening. Thomas admits that since his son disappeared, he has had many mishaps.... his house broken into, he was assaulted on the street, and several other instances of things happening.
Tyrone feels for certain that if he can find the person writing the emails, he will find the man who took the child.
There are family secrets that no one seems to want to share with Tyrone. And he's not so sure that Thomas has all the answers. His grand-father knows things .. but won't tell. His girlfriend seems to be supportive and loving ... but is she really? The child's mother has moved on and is living off and on with a new man.
Even though this is the latest of a series, it does well as a stand-alone. As usual I would recommend starting with THE LADY VANISHED, Book 1. This is a compelling series, well-written, with cleverly drawn characters.
I really like the merging of Tyrone's professional life with his personal life. It makes Tyrone seem so much more credible ... not a superhero by any means, but someone who cares about his job and never crosses the line.
Many thanks to the author / Joffe Books / Netgalley for the advanced digital copy. Opinions expressed here are unbiased and entirely my own. -
Bit of a slow start and doesn’t really get going until almost at the end. But it’s a great ending.
Hope you have read the previous books as lots of spoilers. -
5 stars
This book is told from two points of view. The first is from the stalker and the other is in the third person.
Ty Swift meets at Thomas Maddox’ caravan to discuss the odd accidents and threatening emails he has been receiving. His six-month old son was also kidnapped two years earlier. The case remains unsolved. Thomas is a shy and unassuming person. It is very hard to believe that he would take advantage or offend anyone. Are the incidents connected?
It seems Thomas’ grandfather Gabe has also been getting these emails. Gabe is the opposite of Thomas. He is somewhat combative and a very forthright business man. The sender of the latest one knows almost immediately that Gabe has hired a private investigator.
Gabe sets out to interview various individuals who may or may not have a grudge against the family Maddox, including Thomas’ ex-wife, the mother of the missing boy Oscar. He meets all kinds of personalities along the way; the defensive, the nice, the cantankerous and all those in between. He speaks with countless people and begins to make perhaps a little headway into the case.
The emails, strange “accidents” and general badgering continue. Then tragedy strikes. Still at a loss, Swift flounders about for a bit and then it all comes together. He knows where Oscar is. He knows who the stalker is. In a thrilling and exciting denouement, Swift rushes to prevent an even greater tragedy.
This book is very well written and plotted. It builds suspense immediately. The reader is entranced from the beginning on hearing Thomas’ story. The characters are well drawn and enough information is given about their backgrounds to be interesting, but not so much that it detracts from the story. This is my first Gretta Mulrooney book, but it won’t be my last. I immediately went to Amazon to look at her other novels.
I want to thank Netgalley and Joffe Books for forwarding to me a copy of this great book to read. -
My Rating: 4.9 out of 5 stars
This is the first Tyrone Swift book I have read and I think I have been missing out on an excellent series.
Tyrone is a very lovable character. Unlucky in love and life but he has let this shape him into a very caring and compassionate man. He is an ex-policeman turned PI and has earned a very good reputation for getting results. This book sees him struggling with a lot of personal issues which leaves him a little vulnerable to the issues that present themselves within the case.
Swift is hired by Gabe to find the sender of threatening emails. As we delve deeper into the case the true personality of Gabe presents itself and it is not a pretty picture. Gabe is an overbearing bullying character with a very inflated opinion of himself. He thinks he knows what is best for everyone and that people should do his will. I didn't like Gabe but then I am pretty sure I wasn't supposed to.
The case is prompted by the emails but it actually starts 2 years before when Thomas' baby is snatched and accidents seem to see him coming. Swift is of the opinion all the events and abduction are linked in some way to the emails but Gabe and the police disagree. Swift begins the long hard job of untangling the webs of lies, deceipt, bribery and relationships and trying to put it all back together.
This is a totally gripping book that grabs the reader at the beginning and doesn't let go. There are twists and turns all the way through. Just when you think you have worked it out another thread appears which keeps the suspense building right to the very end.
This is a brilliant read and I can't thank Joffe Books enough for providing me with an advance copy. -
A man named Thomas Maddox has hired Tyrone Swift to look into the case involving a baby who was abducted two years ago .
Shortly after he starts receiving strange emails. He and Oscar’s mother Maura had split up after Oscar was taken. He wants Tyrone to look into the emails. -
I didn’t believe the final reveal of the identity of the watcher. First of all, what happened to his Kiwi accent? Secondly, how could he be everywhere at all times? Seemed like he was in two places at once: London and Turnbridge.
Third, I dislike the plot line with Ruth. I wish Th would find some better and deserving of him. I was so devastated when Kris Jelen died in the previous book. -

My Review
Watching You is the fourth book in which features Private Investigator Tyrone Swift written by Gretta Mulrooney, I’m ashamed to say it’s my first dance with Tyrone and Gretta’s books, but it definitely won’t be my last.
Tyrone Swift a former Police Detective, turned Private Investigator has been hired by the Maddox family to determine the source of anonymous emails being sent to Thomas the grandson of Gabe. The emails hint at the disappearance of Thomas’s son Oscar two years previous. Someone is watching and the police have found nothing.
The investigation doesn’t go smoothly as the Maddox family have secrets. There is an unwillingness to disclose information pertinent to the case as Swift stumbles along unsure of the truth due to a lot of misdirection from the stalker and the Maddox family. Eventually the investigation becomes more intense, the stalker starts to goad Swift and the pieces start to fall into place, Swift knows the identity of the stalker and what happened to Oscar.
While investigating Swift has had family troubles of his own, his daughter has been diagnosed as being deaf, his ex has martial problems and Swifts daughter is in the middle of it all. Swift has to try and maintain a balance between professional and family relations during his investigations, at times it proves difficult due to the fact he also has a child.
Watching You is an intense psychological thriller full of red herrings, fast paced and will keep you guessing until the very end. -
Thomas has started getting rather strange emails. Ones that are verging on being threatening. They started arriving almost two years to the day after his son was snatched from under his watch. His Grandfather Gabe is a character and a wealthy one at that, so employs Ty Swift a private investigator to find out more as the police are at a dead end. This is a very different story. Told from Swift’s perspective as well as the perpetrator, this is a mystery with a difference. We have no idea why Thomas and Gabe are being targeted or who it is likely to be. Swift has his own family issues and this provides a second background story line which I like as there is always more to the main character than just their “role”. A very descriptive, engaging book that puts you right into the heart of the scene with a cleverly hidden perpetrator.
I voluntarily chose to read this ARC and all opinions in this review are my own and completely unbiased. -
3 ½ *stars REALLY
I SEE TY’S LUCK HASN’T GOT ANY BETTER (SIGH) AFTER READING 5 ½ BOOKS IN THIS 7 BK SERIES. I FIND IT DIFFICULT SOMETIMES TO CONTINUE READING ABOUT HIS LIFE & CASES MOSTLY HIS LIFE BECAUSE IT'S SO DEPRESSING. IT’S LIKE HE LIVES UNDER A BLACK CLOUD OF DOOM, ALL OF HIS LIFE EVEN AS A CHILD. BECAUSE I LIKE HIS CHARACTER AND FEEL AS IF I REALLY KNOW HIM AND REALLY FEEL SORRY FOR ALL THE TERRIBLE THINGS THAT HAPPENEN TO HIM. RUTH’S A SELFISH, GREEDY BITCH WANTS TO DO & HAVE ALL THE TIME, WHILE KEEPING A LEASH FIRMLY AROUND TY’S NECK. GRR. I HATE HER. ;0 -
A slow burning mystery
The story was slow in starting and plot didn't become clear until halfway through the book. Then it took off at some pace. The characters were well drawn and the descriptions were spot on. All in all it was the best book in the series so far. It could be read as a stand only novel but it is better if you read the preceding books first to understand the main characters. -
Watching You
Tyrone Swift faces his most challenging case yet, when he is asked to look into a series of anonymous emails sent to a man whose son had disappeared and never been found.
Gretta Mulrooney has written another excellent Tyrone Swift novel. The story was full of twists and turns, not to.mention red herrings.
I thoroughly enjoyed it and highly recommended it. -
Great read
Really enjoying Me Tyrone Swift, and getting to know his family and friends. This is another great read, full of little twists and turns. -
This had a good plot but so much of the book taken up with Swift's personal life which I'm finding frustrating. Sorry, its just putting me off reading the next in the series.
