Earth Mama's Spiritual Guide to Weight Loss by Stephanie Rose Bird is the most unique weight-loss book. It doesn't make you feel guilty. It doesn't beat strict rules over your head. It's friendly, motivational, and inspirational. And it offers techniques that no other weigh-loss book will share, such as how mediation and essential oils can give you a boost, help you to refocus, and even to conquer your cravings. This spiritual guide takes a different approach, which I love, and encourages you to connect with Mother Earth and the goddesses on your weight-loss journey. Prayers, chants, affirmations, incantations, and visualizations help you to discover things about yourself and to draw power from other sources to achieve your goal.

If this sounds like your cup of tea, this book is for you. You can even have a cup of tea while you study it and get in control.

*I was given this book by the author in exchange for an honest review. This review is 100% mine.

As a long-time fan of Stephanie Rose Bird, I could not wait to read her new book, Earth Mama’s Spiritual Guide to Weight Loss. Weight loss does not feature among my goals, but I am a firm believer that a sound mind begets a sound body, and although I don’t have any pounds to lose, I am always looking for ways to improve my overall health and wellness. Armed with excitement and eager to discover new tricks to take care of my body and mind, I happily delved into the preface of the book. It didn’t take but a couple of pages for me to realize that this book is not only for women who aim to lose weight, but for all of us who strive toward wholeness.
It was fascinating to read of Bird’s travels to Australia, and her openness to expose herself to cultures that might hold secrets we too often dismiss as primitive. Her adventure reminded me of Carlos Castaneda’s perception when he first met Don Juan: As a young, well-educated anthropologist, Castaneda was quick to assume that a bushman was no match to a scientist; thankfully for him, Castaneda soon realized that Don Juan knew a lot more than Carlos gave him credit for, and he eventually agreed to become Don Juan’s student. Stephanie Rose Bird did not make such an initial mistake. She moved herself and her family to Australia after feeling pulled by Aborigines’ works of art, and she spent a year learning about their culture and healing techniques. Her observations led her to understand that many other cultures view food as a necessary intake to stay alive, but unlike us, they don’t live to eat. Rather, the relationship they have with food is a holistic one, focused on the connection we have with everything around us.
Her reflections in this book branch out to embrace other cultures as well, from European systems of belief to African-derived religions that made their way to America and blended with Catholicism to create Santeria and a handful of other similar traditions that are still honored and served today.
But, aside from the great intellectual references, what intrigued me about this book most is its practical approach to creating a whole person through bits of wisdom gathered in multiple places. The book is rich with “recipes” and simple rituals that can easily empower its readers and give them new resolve to “keep on the path.”
Earth Mama’s Spiritual Guide to Weight Loss is a book for anyone who wishes to delve deeper and become healthier, by embracing a new sense of awareness that will accompany them the rest of their lives.

In Earth Mama's Spiritual Guide to Weight Loss, soul worker Stephanie Rose Bird brings equally sacred caretaking to the body. So often in our modern understanding of the personal cosmology--mind-body-soul--the form is relegated to mundane rigor and routine maintenance as its only acknowledgment. We really only notice it when it's not well and its discomfort interferes with our other levels of being. The body is divine. It has its own relationship to divinity, unique from that of other aspects of self. Every cell has its own relationship to divinity, and Bird not only realizes that fact, but helps readers come into active relationship within that connection. She lays out a range of soul lifting, Spirit infusing rituals, ceremonies, habits, and devotions for how to cultivate and sustain the body as spiritual practice, not just in times of need or when it's convenient, but throughout the day, throughout life. What's wonderful is she gives so many options, readers don't necessarily have to upheave their lives to honor their bodies. Some rituals require radical change, though many are small, quick, doable actions that can be taken right away. Bird speaks with care, wisdom, and authority. Let your body listen.

I really wanted to read a book that combined spiritual wellness with weight loss... ya know, like finding inner peace in order to stop emotional eating and trying to fill a spiritual void with comfort food. I've been trying to get through Intuitive Eating: A Revolutionary Program that Works for the past few weeks and it is all about listening to your body's hunger/satiety cues to guide your food intake and choices. While it isn't exactly a page-turner, I see its value. I was hoping that Earth Mama's Spiritual Guide to Weight Loss would be a good companion to that book, possibly collectively leading me to some kind of epiphany that would change my eating habits forever.

Wellllllll.... this wasn't exactly what I thought it would be, but it was certainly very different and extremely interesting. It started out by sharing the author's own weight loss journey and the healthy lifestyle she achieved while living off the land in Australia. She also discussed different herbs and oils that may help with weight loss and basically encouraged ditching processed foods for the edible gifts Mother Nature (or Earth Mama) has to offer us. This was all expected information, but where things got more interesting was how the author then mapped out different weight loss incantations and rituals, which often involved invoking the help of different loas and figures from different cultures, pagan religions, etc., Examples are given from cultures stemming basically from every continent and ranging anywhere from Baba Yaga (the witch of Russian folklore) to the Legbas of the Voodoo religion.

It was certainly very interesting and I definitely learned a lot about a lot of different things.

Do not expect to open this book and see the same printed words you have ever read in any other weight loss book!
Stephanie Rose Bird takes a whole new approach to helping those on a journey to weight loss. Let me just say that she doesn't tell you "This is what you must eat for this meal" or "Never eat this food if you expect to loose extra pounds"!
No, this is a more gentle approach, a Spiritual approach, to changing your life on this journey you have chosen to improve your life.
I love the way Stephanie incorporates the use of natural materials, the use of meditation, and daily devotions. All are meant to accompany you for a lifetime of wellness. The use of Spirit Dolls and Essential Oils is especially dear to my heart, as well. I certainly enjoyed it, and I believe it is one of her best books to date!
