The holiday season is a busy time, with people bustling about. And it's a busy time for Edgar, a cabdriver who conveys passengers around the city. All day long Edgar drives his cab; many people going to many different places. At the end of one busy day, Edgar is so tired he climbs into the backseat of his cab to take a nap. But he discovers he is not alone. A little hamster has somehow been left behind from one of the many fares Edgar has driven. Edgar dutifully reports the hamster to the cab company's Lost and Found department, but in the meantime the little creature needs to be taken care of. Edgar brings the hamster to his apartment, making it a bed, feeding it, and even giving it a name, Chickpea. As Edgar starts his Hanukkah observance, with no family nearby to share in it, the little hamster becomes more than a casual companion to the lonely man. But what happens when Chickpea's owner is found?

    Very sweet story.

Edgar lives alone and is a taxi driver that often naps in his car when it slows after a long day of ferrying people to and from. It's a snowy holiday night and he's awakened by the fuzzy scamper of a hamster across his chest. How did this little thing get in his cab? He begins a back search to his fares, asking them all if they are missing the little fuzz ball. As yet, no one claims him, so Edgar takes him home and makes a cozy spot for him until he finds the missing keeper. Of course, he gets a bit attached to the little bundle of cuteness. When he recognizes a boy and his mother as one of his fares, he inquires if they are missing the critter. Indeed, it was for a class project at school. Edgar relates how he has been taking care of the lil fella and the boy opts to let him keep him. Cuteness overload.

After a long day of driving people around, Edgar the cabbie takes a nap in the back seat of his car, only to discover that someone has left a hamster behind. Reporting the matter to his cab company's lost and found, he takes the little animal home with him and cares for it. As the nights of Hanukkah pass, the solitary Edgar, far from his family in Israel, becomes more and more attached to his new companion, whom he names Chickpea. What will he do when the hamster's owners are found...?

A sweet holiday picture-book, one which pairs an engaging, heartwarming story with colorful, appealing artwork, Hanukkah Hamster emphasizes the comfort that our animal friends can bring us, when we're feeling lonely or down. I'd never actually considered the charms of the hamster before, but Brazilian illustrator André Ceolin certainly makes Chickpea look cute as a button in his illustrations, while American author Michelle Markel spins a poignant tale around Edgar and his cricetine friend. Recommended to those looking for picture-books set during Hanukkah and/or featuring hamsters.

I have a cute little hamster keychain that my friend gave me for Christmas last year, and since I don't have a real pet right now, I'm pretty attached to him (his name is Hamish). So when I saw this book at work with the cute hamster, I had to check it out!

Edgar is a cab driver and all his family is back home in Israel. It's a busy holiday season and one day he finds a hamster in the back of his cab! He tells the taxi company lost and found but no one calls about the hamster. Edgar takes him home, feeds him, names him Chickpea, and builds toys for him while they celebrate Hanukkah together. Finally Edgar finds the people who lost the hamster (the same day they'd bought him to be a class pet), but they realize he and Edgar have bonded and decide Chickpea should stay in his new home!

Hanukkah Hamster is adorable. I have to say, the illustrations won me over more than the story. There’s nothing better than a beautiful book.

The story is about cabbie, Edgar, who is from Tel Aviv. His family is there, while he lives in the states presumably. While running punters during the holiday season, he finds a hamster has been lost. The story tells of how he shares his solitary life with the adorable critter while both seeking out the owner and sharing Hanukkah.

I enjoyed Hanukkah Hamster and can’t wait to read it to my Ewoks♥️

This is a sweet, happy, and unique book starring a lonely cabdriver who is missing his family during the holiday season. When a hamster unexpectedly shows up in his cab, he is unsure what to do. However, as the days pass, he forms a bond with the sweet little animal and faces the reality that "Chickpea" may belong to someone who is missing her...

I checked this book out because I was so intrigued by the title and it turned out to be a very sweet story about a man from Israel living all alone in America and missing all he has left behind and the simple miracle that helps him find joy again!

Read this for Preschool Storytime celebrating Hanukkah. Chickpea is an adorable hamster who ends up in Edgar's taxi just as Hanukkah is stating. Chickpea and Edgar celebrate the holidays together and there's a cute twist, too.
