Young readers learn about the life of Harriet Tubman—born a slave around 1820, she escaped to the North, but returned to the South nineteen times as a conductor on the Underground Railroad to lead 300 slaves to freedom. An incredibly gifted athlete, Jackie Robinson endured taunts, slurs, and death threats when he broke the color barrier in Major League Baseball in 1947. Rosa Parks refused to give up her seat to a white man on an Alabama bus in 1955 and paved the way for a Supreme Court decision that declared segregation on Alabama’s public buses was unconstitutional. On January 20, 2009, Barack Obama took the oath of office as our country’s first African American president.
Illustrated with a dynamic mix of photographs and illustrations, the biographies of these Americans delve deeper than their accomplishments to reveal details on their childhoods, early experiences, schooling, family life, and more. Sidebars about related topics—Underground Railroad routes, sports firsts, the Harlem Renaissance, and more—give context and additional insights for young readers. Heroes of Black History also gives readers a timeline overview of three centuries of African American history, beginning with the slave trade, touching upon the formation of the NAACP, the civil rights movement, the March on Washington, and other pivotal events, up through the beginning of the Black Lives Matter movement. Brief profiles of more than twenty additional heroes of black history, a glossary of key terms, and a detailed index are also included in this comprehensive book.
Heroes of Black History (America Handbooks, a Time for Kids) Reviews
-
Heroes of Black History starts with a brief timeline of black history in America from the 1600s to present day. It then goes on to detail the lives of four prominent African Americans: Harriet Tubman, Jackie Robinson, Rosa Parks, and Barack Obama.
It’s amazing what they all overcame and accomplished.
While this book is aimed at children, everyone could benefit from reading it, whether as a refresher or delving into this subject for the first time. -
This brilliant children's book powerfully showcases the lives of four monumental African Americans, as Harriet Tubman, Jackie Robinson, Rosa Parks, and Barack Obama are celebrated in black history milestones.

When I was asked to take part in this blog tour, I knew right away that I wanted to be part of week 4 of the tour to focus on Barack Obama for a few reasons: 1) I need a reminder of modern heroism; 2) I’ve featured the other three Americans on Unleashing Readers before (Harriet Tubman, Jackie Robinson, Rosa Parks); 3) The Obamas, in my opinion, are the perfect couple to feature on a Valentine’s Day post.
Obama’s biography within this text reminded me that hard work, high ethics, kindness, love, and intelligence can lead to success and that being cutthroat or brutal are not the key features in heroes of mine. The biography, overall, was quite simple and focused on the main points of Obama’s life and presidency; however, it is a wonderful introduction to his life thus far and really ensures that readers understand how he got to where he is and how he changed history. It was so refreshing to read about a person that faced discrimination and resistance with such grace and resilience.
I also got to glimpse into the upbringing of Obama which I ended up knowing less about than I thought. I hadn’t realized he hardly knew his father nor that he lived in Indonesia for a while before returning to live with his grandparents in Hawaii. All of this lead to Michelle and him meeting while he was completing an internship–her stability appealed to him. And that was the beginning of a beautiful romance. And the beginning of a journey that neither of them probably saw coming.
The other sections in this text follow similar suits in that they are wonderful introductions of each historically significant American. -
This volume is a great addition to any elementary and middle school library. As with almost any other book published by TIME for Kids, it presents factual information in a clear and attractive manner, with high quality pictures and accessible text. I would recommend this for grades 4-8.

Heroes in Black History profiles 4 leaders in the African American community. The information is easy to understand. Included are many pictures of the individuals and a timeline of important dates in the person's life. This book will make a good addition to any elementary school teachers' or young students' library.
I won a copy of this book in a Goodreads' giveaway, but the opinion is all my own. -
Just in time for Black History Month 2018, Time for Kids has published a book spotlighting four heroes of black history from Harriet Tubman, to Jackie Robinson, Rosa Parks, and, of course, Barack Obama. Each one of these courageous Americans has contributed so much in the fight for social justice for African Americans, and in fact, for all persons of color.
Each 40 page biography begins with a look at the person's childhood, influences of family and school that helped them become who they were/are. Each section also contains a mix of photographs and illustrations as well as maps and inserts with additional information to give a more depth to each person's achievements, and ends with a two page recap of important dated in their lives. Heroes of Black History is ideal for readers in middle school, and the large print and clear sentences makes this an especially good book for older reluctant readers.
Young readers will learn about what an important part of the Underground Railroad Harriet Tubman was, and how, in the first half of the 1800s, she led over 300 slaves to freedom, risking her own life each time. Later, during the Civil War, Harriet worked tirelessly caring for injured Union soldiers, and, at the same time, continuing to help free more than 800 slaves. Harriet is truly an inspiring and audacious hero for kids.
Jackie Robinson was not just a great athlete, but also a groundbreaking African American. First, in the US Army during WWII when he stood up for what was right, even facing a court martial for not giving up his seat on a military bus after the army was desegregated. Later, Jackie became the first African American to play on a major league team when he joined the Brooklyn Dodgers in 1947. Imagine how much courage it must have taken in the face of all the discrimination and prejudice Jackie had to deal with in his fight for social justice.
Rosa Parks probably never imagined how much her life would change the day she refused to give up her seat on a city bus in 1955 in segregated Montgomery, Alabama. Despite fear, Rosa also believed in fighting for what was right and she was tired of living a life of separate and unequal. Rosa's arrest led to the famous bus boycott in Montgomery when working people refused to ride city buses to their jobs in solidarity with Rosa. After buses were desegregated almost a year later, Rosa spent the rest of her life working for social justice for African Americans. Rosa is an inspiring example of how one person can really make a difference.
Even before he was elected our first African American president, Barack Obama has spent his adult
life serving people. First, as a community organizer in a poor section of Chicago, advocating for and with the people there to improve their lives and their community. Later, Barack became a United States Senator, with the same ideas about improving life, especially for the African American communities he represented. And that didn't change much when he was sworn in as President Obama on January 20, 2009.
President Obama is the only present day hero included in this book, and I think his story shows young readers that he is more than just a public figure, that his family is of utmost importance to him and it is from them that he garners the desire to fight for change to make the world a better place. I hope kids will realize, as I have after reading this book, that he served his time as President with grace and dignity for 9 years, showing strength, humor, and resiliency in the face of so much opposition. And I believe kids today will reap the benefits of this youthful leader who still has many great years of achievement ahead of him.
Heroes of Black History is an excellent resource for both school and home libraries. In addition to the book, the editors of Time for Kids have also produced a detailed downloadable PDF Curriculum Guide that also includes a printable Fast Facts sheet for all four of these heroes.
This book is recommended for readers age 9+

Making History
Journalist and civil rights activist Charlayne Hunter-Gault wrote the introduction to Heroes of Black History. Reading her reflection is critical to bring these stories of history into the reality of children’s everyday lives. Like Ms. Hunter-Gault, many children will feel as though history is their “invisible armor”. When a child hears a story about another child being successful, they feel it is possible for them too.

Through this incredible book, children will be able to process and understand racial prejudice as well as celebrate the incredible progress that has been made thanks to these four incredible heroes of black history. These stories of Harriet, Ruby, Jackie, and President Obama are interconnected in so many ways, and “regardless of race, creed, or color, we ourselves, like these heroes of black history, are protected by history’s armor.”

Heroes of Black History Review
Illustrated in a dynamic way, children will be drawn into the fascinating stories of these four Heroes of Black History. We know the four names well: Harriet Tubman, Jackie Robinson, Rosa Parks, and Barack Obama.
However, with each chapter, their personal stories are revealed in a way that will give new insights to young readers. Their personal journeys before they became famous underscores the urgency of raising racially conscious children! You will learn about the early years of each of their lives and the importance of their faith, family, and community.
The most striking takeaway from this book is the focus on black excellence. These four heroes were intelligent, beautiful, witty, and charming human beings. As you read, I encourage you to help children focus on their amazing accomplishments in spite of their circumstances instead of feeling pity for their hardships.

Each of the biographical chapters ends with a timeline and additional information of the historical eras. This high-interest tool is perfect for using the book as a mentor text for students. Additionally, you can download a free Heroes of Black History Curriculum Guide for discussion questions and writing extensions. Furthermore, there is an accompanying FREE resource available from Time for Kids with “Fast Facts” about each of the Heroes in Black History.
Side note: My family and I also took a trip to the Harriet Tubman Byway, (which you can also do virtually). You can immerse yourself in Tubman’s world through informative, evocative and emotive exhibits.

I would highly recommend that every person take the time to do this pilgrimage with the children in your lives. On one hand, you will see the stories of Harriet Tubman came alive. In spite of the tragedies Harriet endured, it was a powerful experience to visit her childhood farm and see the road she took hundreds of people to their freedom with our own eyes.
Knowing our history is one of the best ways to prevent ourselves from repeating the same mistakes. My multiracial family is reaping the benefits of the fight for human rights and equality. Yet, we have a long way to go to achieve racial and gender equality. Reading Heroes of Black History may spark a courageous conversation and encourage young children to join in social justice work in their own communities.
Heroes of Black History is a great addition to any elementary or middle school library. You can depend on the integrity of the story from highly reputable publisher TIME for Kids. Furthermore, this book presents factual information in a clear and attractive manner, with high-quality pictures and accessible text for a range of readers.
In particular, the pages are thoughtfully designed with chapter headings and font in larger text, captioned photographs, and sidebars will be useful to teachers who want to delineate nonfiction features.
I would recommend this book for Grades 4-8. -
Torn between 3 stars or 4, ultimately, I decided to give the "I liked it" star rating. Why? Well, nonfiction for middle grade readers is always a good thing. Putting biographies in my kids' hands of underrepresented people is always a good idea. And Time for Kids? Yeah, that's another plus. But surely Harriet Tubman, Jackie Robinson, Rosa Parks and Barack Obama have been written about. A lot. Why not include lesser known, yet equally as worthy, people for young readers to learn about?

I won an advance reader's copy in a Goodreads giveaway. This book has great pictures, nice big text for young readers, and fun pop-out boxes with extra information. It's a great collection for any child's library.

Well written stories of 4 great and very different figures. Overall, an easy to digest and enjoyable read for children with an interest in these persons or as a supplemental educational resource.

*I received a copy of this book from the Kidlitexchange network in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are my own.*
This book presents in a succinct way the lives and accomplishments of Harriet Tubman, Jackie Robinson, Rosa Parks, and Barack Obama. The best way I can describe it is that it feels like a synopsis of their respective biographies.
I appreciated the candid and factual tone of the narrative. There was no embellishment or dramatization. If there was, then it was done well enough for me to miss it.
Knowing our history is one of the best ways to prevent ourselves from repeating the same mistakes. My generation is reaping the benefits of their fights for human rights and equality even though we have our own challenges to overcome.
I love that a book like this exists to teach, enlighten and hopefully encourage younger generations to continue fighting for social justice in small and perhaps big ways. -

Thank you to @kidlitexchange for the review copy of this book. All opinions are my own. Time for Kids: Heroes of Black History is an excellent resource for libraries and middle grade classrooms. The information is very clear, informative, and written in “kid friendly” language. There are photographs to accompany each story. This book gives biographies on Harriet Tubman, Jackie Robinson, Rosa Parks, and Barrack Obama. Harriet Tubman was a conductor of the Underground Railroad who led over 300 slaves to freedom. Jackie Robinson broke the color barrier by being the first African American to play baseball in the major leagues. Rosa Parks, mother of the Civil Rights Movement , is best known for refusing to give up her seat on a public bus. This started the famous Montgomery bus boycott and helped to change some of the laws of segregation in our country. Barrack Obama was the first African American president of the United States. He had an interesting upbringing, and worked hard for all of his successes.
I found the stories very interesting! Even though I knew quite a bit about each of these individuals, I also gained a lot of new knowledge. I like how there was a timeline of each person’s life at the end of their story. I also found the glossary and mini biographies of other African American Heroes helpful in giving students additional information. While there are many important Heroes of Black History, I found this book to be a great representation of a few heroes from different eras in history. -
Learning about black history is something we should all do. There are so many famous African Americans who have contributed to making the United States the great country that it is today. Time Inc Books is sharing just 4. Readers can learn about Harriet Tubman, Jackie Robinson, Rosa Parks and Barack Obama. These 4-legendary people have changed American History forever.
Harriet Tubman was a key contributor of saving slaves via the Underground Railroad. Jackie Robinson stood his ground and proved African American baseball players should be able to play alongside white players. Rosa Parks fought against segregation. Barack Obama became the first African American President of the United States. Readers will find the stories of their lives and how they became the famous people we know today. Phenomenal photos, colorful illustrations along with brief descriptions that can be found under some of the photos and illustrations will engage and educate all readers.
Parents and teachers can share these stories with their kids. Educating children about the countries history with actual photos can open up dialogue to discuss how history has changed and how anyone can be a part of change. -

Heroes of Black History: Biographies of Four Great Americans
By the Editors of Time for Kids Magazine
This includes biographies of four American heroes, Harriet Tubman, Jackie Robinson, Rosa Parks and Barack Obama. We learn about their families, their childhoods and the paths they followed as they grew into the heroes that we know. This is written in a style that will hold the interest of even those who may be reluctant to choose a biography. The headings, multiple illustrations with strong captions, the glossary, the index and the timelines of their lives enables the reader to find the information they are looking for quickly and easily, if the book is being used for research. However, with all of the little known facts that are included in this biography, many kids will find themselves reading the entire book! Heroes of Black History needs to be added to every elementary library collection. -
Thanks to the #kidlitexchange network for the review copy of this book – all opinions are my own.
This book is a collection of 4 biographies. Harriet Tubman, Jackie Robinson, and Rosa Parks are from previously published single volumes. The fourth, Barack Obama, is new but pieced together from some previous articles. An introduction by Charlayne Hunter-Gault, a timeline of Black History in America, and 3 pages of mini biographies of other “Heroes” unify the theme of influential black Americans. There are plenty of photographs with captions, maps, timelines, and charts to help the reader more deeply understand the events explained.
I have the 3 previously published volumes in my elementary library, and in comparing them I prefer the layout of the individual books for my young readers. The individual books are less stark, there are more graphics to break up the text, and I believe they are more appealing overall for young elementary aged readers. However, I believe this collection would be well-suited for a middle school library. -
Attractively designed and engaging text of four well-known figures in black history. Fine addition for any collection that doesn't already overflow with their biographies. Are more volumes featuring less well-known figures planned for the future? That would be great!

Thanks to @kidlitexchange for the review copy of this book. All opinions are my own. 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟Time Kids: Black Heroes of History by Charlayne Hunter-Gault. The Book begins with a timeline from the early 1600s to present day with interesting facts then focuses on four prominent figures in history. Harriet Tubman, Jackie Robinson, Rosa Parks, and Barack Obama. It is amazing what these individuals endured and explained in which young readers can relate. Even adults may learn a new fact or two. 🤣 The book ends with summaries on other prominate figures in black history and a Glossary to explain more in detail events that occurred. An excellent addition for any child's library. Review also posted on Instagram @jasonnstacie, Library Thing, Go Read, Amazon, and my blog at readsbystacie.com
