He was one of the brightest stars at the Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce, a brilliant young banker on his way to the top. But Brian Molony had a secret he loved to gamble. The unsuspecting bank was soon fuelling that obsession, as Molony helped himself to hundreds of thousands, then millions, of dollars in fraudulent loans. Despite falling deeper and deeper in the hole, Molony convinced himself he could win it all back. Before long, the mild-mannered assistant manager had become one of the biggest high-rollers the casinos had ever seen and earned himself a place in the annals of criminal history.

Stung: The incredible obsession of Brian Molony Reviews

This book is a bit old school, but if you have any interest in banking or gambling it's worth a read. I found the first half a bit slow, but the second half picked up pace and was very entertaining.

It's amazing how one guy could get away with gaming the system for so long.

Gary Ross' expose of the massive fraud committed by associated bank manager Brian Molony is like watching a train wreck unfolding in slow motion. Molony who was able to hide his massive gambling addiction from the majority of those who knew him, found himself increasingly indebted to gangsters and casinos while at the same time playing the seemingly endless game of "borrowing" from his employers and customers until he could pay them back. As his fraud ultimately amounts to a debt of more than $9 million, Moloney clings hopelessly to the belief that he can pay it all back with one good run! The book offers a sympathetic look at Molony and profiles not only his crime but his life subsequently. It points out the weaknesses of the banking processes of the 1980s.

Huge fan of Owning Mahoney. Stung is well researched and written, but not as suspenseful or cathartic as the film because Ross does not have the benefit of artistic license. Only worth reading if you are massive fan of the film or curious about early 1980s Canadian banking regulation and culture.
