When Carol Kent's son was sentenced to life in prison without parole, Carol was consumed with grief, sadness, and despair. She was distraught wondering why God permitted this to happen. She had prayed for her son since he was a small child. He had been raised with biblical principles and daily prayer. As Carol tried to make sense of everything, she couldn't help asking, Where's God when it hurts so much?
In the middle of her sorrow, Carol turned to the place where she had always gone for comfort--the Bible. She was desperate to hear God's voice. She soon discovered that the best way for her to -listen- to His voice was to meditate on Scripture and then write out what she believed He was saying. She wrote it as if it was His prayer over her life, and it comforted her. It was as if He took her by the hand, as a father would guide a child, and He gently led her in the direction of unconditional love, renewed hope, and fresh faith.
He Holds My Hand is a page-per-day 365-day devotional. Based on Scripture, this devotional is written as if God the Father is speaking His words of comfort and protection directly over you.
Listen to God's voice and put your hand in His. He is your Comforter, your Healer, your Teacher, and your Joy.
Remember He holds your hand, and He won't let go.

It is like Jesus is talking right to me in each one.
If you read a devotional every morning I HIGHLY recommend this one. It has the Month and day on each page. It has a quote from wonderful people on each page as well.

Desperate to Hear God's Voice
Imagine the shrill ring of the phone and the jolt into wakefulness. The voice in your ear carries unthinkable news. Is it possible that you are still dreaming?
“Your son has been been arrested.”
“The charge is murder. The victim: his wife’s ex-husband.”
As daylight comes, you learn more.
Your son was desperate to protect his step-daughters from their father’s abusive behavior. An unsympathetic judge had lifted restrictions and mandated visitation. Taking matters into his own hands, your son has somehow come to believe that the only way to save the girls from more abuse was to take their father’s life.
This is Carol Kent’s real-life story, lived out against a backdrop of grief, shame, and self-recrimination:
What kind of mother produces a murderer?
What about all the prayers, committing her son to God’s care and guidance?
How could she continue as an author and a speaker at Christian conferences when her son had been sentenced to life in prison?
If they had been more spiritual, would God have protected them from this nightmare?
Following a tragedy too big for her heart to hold, Carol was thrown back on her trust in God and her dependence upon His Truth. Heart break slowed her reading pace to a crawl, and she clung desperately to the sound of God’s voice, meditating on the words, writing down the morsels of comfort that came, line upon line.
As she has shared in her book, When I Lay My Isaac Down: Unshakable Faith in Unthinkable Circumstances, there was no neat and happy ending to Carol’s story. Her son continues to serve his sentence in prison, God has not intervened miraculously, and yet, Carol continues to learn, “day by day, that there is no obstacle that Christ’s resurrection doesn’t give me the power to overcome.”
Living with the daily need of God’s presence and protection, Carol has produced He Holds My Hand: Experiencing God’s Presence and Protection, a devotional work offering 365 individual meditations on Scripture. Accompanied by a relevant quotation, thoughtful questions, and a suggested prayer, each reading offers the Words of God as Words of Hope, spoken over each day. Having experienced the miracle of receiving life- altering truth in the midst of crisis, she recommends that her own words be a devotional complement to a regular schedule of Bible reading as you pause and listen for daily reassurance that God is present in the midst of your circumstances as He was present for her.

He Holds My Hand is a beautiful 365-day devotional that originated out of a tragic experience in the author's life.
This devotional begins with January 1st and ends with December 31st. Each day's devotion is titled with the month and date, as well as, a title. For example for today, the title is "The Best Defense". The author has collected numerous quotations from various Christians, many names quite well known, and she has started off each day's devotion with a quote that is relevant to the title for the day. The body of the devotion reads as if God Himself is speaking to you and at the end, we are given a pertinent Bible verse. In the back of the book, there is a Scripture index which will lead you to the date(s) the Scripture can be found.
What I really like about this devotional is the way Ms. Kent wrote it as if God Himself was speaking. In her acknowledgment, she said this devotional came out of her practicing a new way of responding to God's Word. As she meditated on Scripture, she wondered if the way she conversed with God would be something that others would find helpful in their quest for renewed hope and fresh faith in their walk with God.
The only thing I would change about this devotional is I would have added a ribbon marker to keep the user's place. I chose a magnetic bookmark to use so I don't have to thumb through the pages to find the correct date.
I would highly recommend this devotional to anyone who would like to enrich their time studying the Bible.

Have you ever received an out-of-the-blue phone call that would forever change the course of your life?
Carol Kent knows what that’s like. Several years ago, she and her husband were awakened in the middle of the night with the news that their only son – a US Naval Academy graduate who had never been in trouble with the law – had been arrested for murdering his wife’s ex-husband.
As you can imagine, disbelief, shock, and grief consumed Carol as she tried to make sense of what had happened. She began to listen for God's voice in a new way. During this process, she began to experience greater intimacy with the Father than she had ever known. It was out of this trial that He Holds My Hand: Experiencing God’s Presence And Protection was born.
He Holds My Hand contains 365 dated devotions that open with an inspirational quote, a themed devotion that is written as if God was speaking words of comfort and protection directly over you, and a Scripture to meditate upon.
He Holds My Hand has something encouraging to say to each and every one of us as we go through our daily trials. If you’re looking for a devotional that will help you to experience the love of God in highly personal way, I recommend this devotional to you!

Each and every devotion in this beautiful book speaks to my heart! I have always loved the writing and speaking of Carol Kent and this devotional is extraordinary.
She writes from the point of view of God speaking to us. Each devotional is Biblical and encouraging. There is a theme for each day, an encouraging quote, the devotional and finally the Scripture the devotional is based on.
October 30th’s devotion really spoke to my heart. It’s on Tenderness and she shares how when others hurt us we put a wall up so we don’t get hurt. However, sometimes we can extend that wall against God and not allow Him to get close either. He understands our hurts though and wants us to hold His hand through our road together. This is based on James 5:11. Isn’t this just so reassuring and comforting?
The whole book is like this. I have highlighted and made notes throughout this devotion and I very rarely do that with my other devotionals. This one is just that special.
I highly recommend this book and give it 5 out of 5 stars.

He Holds my Hand is a 365-day devotional written by Carol Kent during a period in her life when her world was turned upside down. After learning her only son was arrested for murder, she turned to God and her Bible to find comfort. The result of all her praying and meditating is found in this wonderful devotional.
The devotional is splendidly written; under each day it begins with a quote followed byCarol's writings and then you find scripture to follow up the writings.

He Holds My Hand: Experiencing God's Presence and Protection by Carol Kent is an insightful devotional. Kent experienced an extremely difficult situation in her life when her son was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole. Needless to say, she experienced ever emotion imaginable.
When she was hopeless, she turned to the Bible for comfort and wrote this devotional out of those times. The devotional is written as if God were speaking directly to the person reading. I must admit, at times, this was extremely comforting and at other times, it was a little strange.
My husband and I read the bulk of what we read together and we both agreed that the content was good and definitely comforting but that it still a little awkward to read the wording of the devotionals at times.
We are also not in the midst of a traumatic season in our lives so maybe that was part of it. I do feel that if you are going through a hard time, this book may be helpful for you. Especially if you need to hear directly from God himself.
